What’s unique about Sallie Tomato Zippers by the Yard is they appear to look like metal, but they actually aren’t! These zippers have a nylon coil with a metallic finish, which makes them easy to cut and sew. Watch the video to learn more about these zippers and download the FREE tip sheet for using Zippers by the Yard!
My favorite thing about these zippers is that you can coordinate the zipper tape color with your fabric and match the nylon coil color with your purse hardware! The coil is size #5, which is ideal for handbags, backpacks, totes, laptop carriers, or they’re even fun for exposed zippers on garments!
I hope you enjoy sewing with Sallie Tomato Zippers by the Yard. Also, I encourage you to try my easy-to-follow patterns and quality purse hardware! Thanks for watching!

Spending the "off season" making a Santa costume for my husband, as he wishes to do charity work and bring smiles. Much pressure on me LOL. Now, I must search your videos or others to find out how to sew very thick fabrics. Trying to be prepared as i can before I start this massive task LOL.

Some zippers by the yard are easy to get those pulls on others not always as easy. However I seem to manage. Today I was making custom sized zippers for my RV reupholstery work. I had to arm bolsters precut and made. I was making one out of 4 zippers for four dinette cushions when WHAT? For the first time in all my years of using zipper by the yard. Get this folks over 40 years. Forty yeas ago the choices were no where near this amazing. But that's another story. I love zippers by the yard. And so on with my tale. See how Sallie demonstrates the back side of the zipper tape has a double row of stitching down each side towards the middle as she tells you that's the stitching that holds the zipper coil to the tape by the manufacturing process. Well I discovered today more than half my zipper by the yard had one sometimes no stitching on one side of the back while the other side of the coil had the double row. I consider myself lucky that I hadn't sewn any actual projects or cushions but was about to. I now have enough tape for one large seat cushion and the two arm cushions. Even though I have added the pulls to the arm cushions I am not going to use them because both are missing at least one stitch down one side that holds the coil in place. I inspected the tape that has the double twin rows of stitching and have just enough to cut the arm pieces again and make one successful seat cushion. I am convinced this is good tape and won't at some time later come apart. The arm bolster zippers I made one looks like the zipper holds but finding about every few inches there's places on the other and a long run of the other tape I haven't cut where the coil isn't caught at all makes me too nervous to go ahead with it. My husbands like so use some of your other zipper tape. As in YOU HAVE ENOUGH you must have something that would work. Will yes and NO. I am doing a slight design variation for the cushions. Making what's called a foating side over lap to a zipper meet in middle side. And that means part of the zipper will be exposed on the side of the seats. I am doing this for two reasons. One it allows me to work in the foam and poly seats which are quite firm without having to use a vacuum as the zipper goes around part of the sides not just down the back of the seat. Since I like this style I thought I'd take advantage and add some embellishment and whimsy too. I'm nodding a little towards Harry Potter. It's subdued nothing over the top mind you but I've got some adorable dragon charms that I will attach to silver zipper pulls and they will hang along the sides of the seat cushions exposed. Because it's a floating side I have the option to tuck them totally out of view too and just leave the silver teeth exposed. The fabric is a marine light grey. My zippers chosen were perfectly matched with the fabric. So it's been almost a year since I ordered. Not from Sallie but elsewhere. I can't return. I did return and correct my 5 star review previously to 1 star. Again this is a fluke but tells me I need to spend time on every order going forth to check the zipper and look for those twin double rows of stitching on the back side of the zipper. Thank you sally for your video. There's others people for when your tape no longer has the lovely no coil to get a pull started. Also how to bring two zippers together as Sallie discussed like luggage. I am doing that with my seat cushions. That means I can opt to show the charms or not. I love options when they are presented. Some people have a knack for zipper by the yard. They make teeth zippers too by the yard and other sizes of coil and teeth like #3 , #5 my favorite, bt there's 7 and all the way to into the teens. My husband's size 12 grey tooth plastic YKK zipper he made his customized back pack out of 50 years ago is still like new on it. The pack is still hanging in well too. He likes tooth and I like coil but the job often dictates which we choose and what size too. I think there's also 3.5 size. So I find most times a #5 works across the board for me where as the #3 is a little too delicate for my heavy duty style projects and purses and bags. This works well if you like me want to collect mixes of coil colors and tape colors and pull colors. I do and so staying primarily with one size and one style means my rainbow teddy bear pulls are going to mate with any of my rainbow coil tapes no matter the color of the tape. And the same with silver gold, gunmetal, black, rose gold, and so on. Happy sewing everyone. Check those tapes when they arrive to insure if there is a problem you can return within the return period.

I have a question I hope Sallie (or someone here) can answer. What is the purpose for sewing two lines at the end of the zipper? Once you cut in between the stitching lines, don't you have to cut off the stitching from what is left on your roll in order to start a new zipper?
@CloudyWishes
@CloudyWishes 5 жыл бұрын
that then becomes the ending of your next zip, as Sallie put on the pull and took it to the end she will also do that for the next zip she makes takinging it instead to the stitched line which is her new ending xx

you always make it look so easy . I can get the zipper on but when I do the second side it's always a little off......any suggestions...?
@SallieTomato
@SallieTomato 11 ай бұрын
Yes! We have several helpful suggestions as sometimes it takes a little practice, getting both sides of the zipper tape to feed evenly into the zipper pull. Here are a couple tips, that we hope are helpful: --The size #5 zippers (larger coil and zipper pulls) can be a little easier than the size #3 zippers (smaller coil and zipper pulls). --Don't be discouraged! There are times when it takes us a few tries to get the opposite sides of the zipper tape even too! Before you add a zipper pull and the zipper coil is zipped together and straight, take a look at the end you're going to add the pull on to. Observe which half of the little coils is closest to you (or "first in line"); that would be the side of the zipper tape that we would feed into the zipper pull just slightly ahead of the remaining zipper tape. --Also, sometimes the first 'loop(s)' in the zipper coil doesn't feed into the zipper pull right away--a little nudge of your fingernail along the outer edge of the coil can direct it into the zipper pull. This helps start the coil halves going into the zipper pull simultaneously. --You can always try adding the zipper pull on the opposite end of the zipper tape. One of the advantages of Sallie Tomato Zippers by the Yard is the pulls can be added from either end.

You will be able to determine I am new to sewing...Question...what is the purpose of the second stitch line that is left on the rest of the roll? I have a few guesses but not for sure. Thanks for a great tutorial!
@SallieTomato
@SallieTomato Жыл бұрын
Thank you for commenting and asking your question. On the back of the zipper tape you see two lines of stitching because that is part of the chain stitch that is formed when the teeth of the zipper are attached to the fabric tape. It is there to secure the teeth in place. If this does not answer you question correctly, please let us know or you can email: info@sallietomato.com Thanks for watching!

@@SallieTomatoI think the original poster meant the two stitch lines that were sewn onto the zipper by the machine in the demonstration. After she cut between the two stitch lines, one was the end of the zipper and what happens to the other stitch line that remains on the zipper? Is that the bottom of the next zipper you make?
@SallieTomato
@SallieTomato 6 ай бұрын
@@Fattiapples Thanks for asking your question. The stitch lines are there to secure the zipper in place on the tape when you sew it into your project. The second line of stitching that remains on the end of the longer piece of tape will be used for the next pull to be placed on the opposite end (and pulled through) so that it does not slide off the end and can be easily put into your project and then the process is repeated. :) Happy Sewing!

thanks for the video, i just bought a pack of these but haven't had a chance to use them yet! question: when you slide the zipper pull down to the opposite end (3:28), the zipper is separated behind the pull and closed in front of the pull (the pull is opening the zipper tape). but when you get to the other end at 3:32, the area behind the zipper pull is closed, and so is the small area in front of it. maybe i'm just missing something obvious but... how do you do this? i'd love to know because the zips are easier to sew in when they are closed on both ends
@SallieTomato
@SallieTomato 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Hayden - You caught my oops! I tried to cut that part out of the video. When you put the pull on, the zipper will be closed. When you zip it all the way to the opposite end, it will still be closed. (In the video, I forgot that I already zipped it down to the opposite end.) But don't worry, your zipper will be closed. Yes, it is much easier to sew in when both ends are closed. I hope this helps!

My zipper bulk doesn't have the fabric lead....how do you make that??
@SallieTomato
@SallieTomato Жыл бұрын
Thank you for commenting! Not all bulk zippers have the fabric lead and that's ok. You're still able to add zipper pulls without the fabric lead, it just takes a little practice. Sometimes the teeth don't feed into the pull right away, try gently coaxing the coils to the center a little; they sometimes get hung up on the outer edges of the zipper pull channels. And there's the Gypsy Zipper Jig that helps. You can find this great product here: sallietomato.com/products/gypsy-quilter-zipper-jig

@SallieTomato

Thank you for commenting and asking! You could still try hand-sewing, using small stitches and possibly two strands of thread. Two or three rows of stitching (stitched close together) would add strength if that works for your project.

Interesting video. Can zippers by the yard be used as both separating or invisible zippers? Also, one common problem of sewing in zippers into garments is sewing past the pull. When using zippers by the yard, can the pull be inserted in the zipper after the required length of zipper tape has been sewn onto the garment?
@SallieTomato
@SallieTomato 3 жыл бұрын
You would need to add metal stops to the end of zipper by the yard to make it separating. The pull needs to be put on before sewing both ends.

Hi there! Unfortunately, with zippers by the yard, both ends need to be sewn into a seam. It's very difficult to put the metal stops on. I do not sell a kit to make separating zippers.

At 3:36 you slide the zipper pull to the opposite end of the zipper, and it opens as it goes. However, once you get down to the other end, the zipper is closed. How is that?
@SallieTomato
@SallieTomato 2 жыл бұрын
Just do it again from the same side that you just entered, and the teeth will be together this time through. :)

There is a missing step... how it is that the zip is totally closed after you pulled it till the end?
@barefacedquestions
@barefacedquestions 5 ай бұрын
I think that's why you need to sew the back stitch on the marked line. This keeps the zipper shut. If you look at pouches or bags with zippers, there is no stopper because the fabrics you sew the zipper to will prevent it from open unintentionally.

Thank you for your question. When you apply the zipper pull you need to separate the zipper. Then you feed it through the zipper pull which causes the zipper to close. If you have any more concerns, please email us at info@sallietomato.com. Happy Sewing!!

Why is your “Butler Method” called that? Amy Butler does not sew down the zipper ends, she pulls the tape out with forceps instead. Too many people are naming different techniques the Butler Method. Check with Amy on this.
