Hi Gabriel: I've been to Brazil but it was a long time ago and would love to return and explore more of the country! I did take an armchair trip to Brazil a few years ago when Seth came on my show and talked about his one way ticket there -- check it out! bit.ly/2leaApI

Very good the video. Actually, many people think the same destinations when traveling. But there are fascinating places that are little visited. One of the destinations little spoken and visited by the brazilians that I would like to know is Suriname, Guyana and French Guiana.

Hi Diogo: I would love to visit Suriname, Guyana and French Guyana! These "off the beaten path" countries have so much to offer! Have you been?
@diogonunes11946 жыл бұрын
No Steven. I've never been, but I really want to meet. It is the side of Brazil and our people often search "clichés places."
@globallycurious91516 жыл бұрын
Diogo - I have been to all three! I loved Suriname. If you google my name and the names of those countries, they article will come up. French Guiana is also fascinating.

I am Brazilian and never had been in amazon rain forest, but.... well, bout Las Vegas, the best abou it was the landscape in the way to vegas (from LA), and visiting the roover dam. Or hoover. Las vegas is not nice in my opinion. They want it to be like it, though.

Thanks for writing! I haven't been to Vegas, as we discussed, but am so curious about the place that I need to go!

Hi Edmilson: Just logged on again and saw your comment. Many kind thanks for that! Travel has been so educational and eye opening and of course, I recommend it to everyone. Even if it's to the other side of town! There's something to be said for having new experiences and broadening one's horizons . . . Bon voyage . . . !

Great interview Seth, it was very interesting to hear about travel in these unusual destinations for a tourist, congrats Steven! There is a Brazilian who likes this kind of travel a lot and I really like his books, Airton Ortiz, I don't know if you know him, but who knows someday one or both of you interview him too, good stories for sure :)

Hi Raquel: Many thanks for writing and so glad you enjoyed the episode! Was great fun being on Seth's show. Thanks too for introducing me to the works of Airton Ortiz. He sounds fascinating. Are his works in English? Oh, and hope you subscribe to my show too: www.theonewayticketshow.com I've got terrific guests - including, of course, Seth! Be in touch. Cheers from NYC...

Steven Shalowitz Hi Steven, thanks for your reply! I'm glad that you liked Airton Ortiz work's. Although he speaks English, I'm afraid that his books are only in Portuguese, maybe you should learn some Portuguese to apreciatte them ;) I'll check your show certainly. See you

Does Transnistria count as my rogue nation? I feel like a rogue simply because I didn't buy any wine there and left after 23 &1/2 hours since my visa was for only 24 hours. I'll renew it next time though

Excellent video. One question I'd have is about the ethical dimension of travelling to some of these places. At what point do the policies or actions of a nation outweigh the benefits of visiting? From my perspective there's at least two categories of 'Rogue Nations.' First there are some countries like Cuba or Egypt where though some of there policies are objectionable, they are basically within the realm of 'normal" behaving countries. As opposed to the second group of countries like Iran and especially North Korea where the mere presence of western tourists is something of a PR coup and where the regimes have held or kidnapped tourists on rather flimsy grounds. I'd appreciate any thoughts on this. Because I'm not sure if my distinctions are really useful or simply justification for my own preferences. I mean, I want to go to Cuba and it is relatively easy to do so and so I think it's ok, and I don't want to and am unlikely to visit North Korea and so I say that's unethical.
@stevenshalowitz28396 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael: Thanks for your comment. There surely are different gradations of a rogue state. It's really a personal choice on where someone decides to go. For me, it's always been out of a sense of curiosity. Plus, as someone who studied international affairs at the graduate level and was trained as a Sinologist, I wanted to visit North Korea for academic reasons. Hope all that answers your question. Thanks for having watched the episode. Seth does a great job and it was a pleasure being on his show. Cheers.
@globallycurious91516 жыл бұрын
Thanks for writing. I agree that there are different categories. But there are more than two, I think. For example, Cuba travel is restricted by the US government, not by the Cubans. When you go you’ll find it’s a totally normal tourist destination for Canadians, Germans and the like. Countries like Algeria and Iran are also happy to have us, it’s more the way we look at them than they look at us. Then there are countries at war. And North Korea, where tourism is tightly controlled and no one really believes they are seeing real life. Of course, the US greatly restricts who can visit, and that was before the Trump travel ban. So just as we are barred from North Korea except with special permission, countless Latin American, Asian and African tourists are barred from visiting the US. So it’s immensely complicated. We probably simplified it too much in the video. But that’s KZbin
@stevenshalowitz28396 жыл бұрын
And again, to build on my initial comment and Seth's, I like to go out of a sense of curiosity and to learn as much about the place as I can . . . It is indeed complicated though in the end . . .
@michaelondic58846 жыл бұрын
I agree, even as I was writing I was thinking there were more than two categories...war zones, borderline failed states, etc. Not to mention countries that can vary widely by region internally. I realize everyone has to make their own decisions and I appreciate both your insights.

Yeah,,, right, Michael. I myself have this huge ethical dilemma in staying here in the US, which is a terrorist empire if there ever was one. I do not love it at all, Michael. Should I just get up and leave it which I've been told to do several million times now by thoroughly deplorable people? Instead, on behalf of the world's peoples, I have stayed here and fought this government my entire life. I'm leaving next month FINALLY and feel guilty that by staying I cannot do anything much to change the government seeing how many deplorable Americans there are almost all around. Maybe by telling foreign nationals the truth about the US will be a good deed though...
