I can’t tell you how many “how I make my videos” videos I have seen, and they always leave things out. So thank you. Really - thank you. Also, you had my mind ripped in half when you announced that your camera does the “coloring.” That is something new to hear. EVERYbody talks about their presets and what color profile to shoot in. This is probably my newest favorite video on your channel. Okay I’m done commenting now. Thank you for reading. ✌️

Have you seen the latest Firmware Update announcement for the LUMIX range!? (19/11/19) Amazing updates to the G9 in particular, I cant wait! VFR 2-180FHD and VFR 2-60 4K and you can get V-Log L with the same purchase code thing for the GH5/5s etc and several other cool features. Perfectly timed video this actually as I've been umming and ahhing over whether to shoot 25fps or 30fps and thus the HFR 150 (25) or 180 (30) but was leaning towards 25. As you say 4x slow mo is really nice and it's been a bit of an annoyance I've had to choose between half speed or 6x so looking forward to having VFR on the G9. Also compatibility with the LUMIX Sync app, that Panasonic Image app is crap! :P Cheers James!

2 points! 1. Your vids are hugely refreshing as is - when so many vloggers have gone a bit film director-y with including loads of b roll, you get to the point (even when you waffle!). 2. Great to hear you're not peddling the "must film in 4k" line. Unless you have tons of watchers casting YT to their 70" 4k TV...what is the point. PC monitors - 1080 is more than fine, laptops, phones, ipads, tablets... Then again my new laptop will have a 4k screen so I might come back and have a moan then... ;)

James, thanks for the video(s). kinda been binging your content as of late. I started doing motorcycle camping content recently and want to upgrade my camera, but obviously size and weight is a big factor given the motorcycle travel. then there’s price. in summary, I’m between the g90 and g9. I won’t really be color grading and generally record at 24 or 30fps. both i would buy used w 14-140mm lumix lens and loawa 7mm. around $1k for g90 combo and $1400 for g9 combo. worth the extra money, size, weight for 12:48 g9? hoping you might point me in the right direction given your extensive experience with these cameras. I have no prior videography/photography experience before these past 7 months of youtube. currently using a dji pocket2 and borrowed sony a6400 as main cameras, but desperately need ibis.

Well, that video arrived at an opportune time. I've just released my first vlog and there were a few things in there that I wasn't sure how to correct and I think you've answered the questions for me. I struggled with the autofocus situation. I think my issue is two fold however. I was keeping my aperture wide at f/4 on a 16mm lens full frame, and is got servo/continuous autofocus going on. This lead to what I think is focus breathing being recorded which is the earliest, weirdest thing to watch back. Cheers James, this video is a great help!

Hi James, very nice and helpful video 🙂 For Sound a lavalier mic is really good but if you don't have a transmitter and use and external one (with your phone or a recorder) it is a lot less convenient in the field. In terms of using face detection with the G80 (I don't have a G90): it works reasonly well and shooting b-roll with the setting is also not a problem since the camera changes to all field auto focus if it does not find a face. Anyway your tips inspired me to get in front of the camera again for my future videos. In the last couple I just shot the videos without Vlogging. 4k allows you to zoom into the footage when producing content in 1080p. So for me I need to change the scale from 100% to 50% in post so that gives some margin to zoom in or move the frame around. Probably only reason why I chose 4k.

I recently got the Canon M50 to do some photography vlogging but I am torn on whether to use Auto mode or Manual mode when filming. On the one hand I am not that confident with filming just yet so I am keeping it on Auto so it figures everything out for me but if I go to Manual then I wouldnt know when to change the shutter/apeture for the scene I am filming? Any tips on when to change those? I film in 1080p 50FPS so I have shutter at around 1/100th but when do I change the aperture? Similar to photography? Just when I want more in focus?
@JamesPopsysPhoto5 жыл бұрын
As a rule keep the shutter speed the same when filming, just change the aperture. Otherwise the footage can start to look weird with shutter speeds too fast or slow :)
@twotone30705 жыл бұрын
I think the received wisdom is shutter speed is always twice the frame rate to give the required 50% shutter, or something like that to do with old film cinema cameras. I don't make cinematic videos on either of my channels, so I set the aperture so that the ISO in Auto is about 200. This allows me the latitude of the subject getting brighter or darker and it not making much difference to the shot I'm taking. With the rugby videos I'm pretty much guaranteed that in the 2 hours I'm there it's going to get darker and I usually open up the aperture a bit at half time. So I suppose it depends whether the nature of what you are shooting is predictable. Regan, nice video BTW.
@JayDowney5 жыл бұрын
I have trouble wrapping my brain around adjusting shutter speed and how it's supposed to be "double" your frame rate, but then you see vloggers adjust it up or down to compensate for the lighting. If I'm correct, then why bother with the double the fps rule?? am I missing something?

6:00 Let me tell you a story. For this story, we need to go back and watch Star Trek Voyager. the older Star Trek TNG looks better to watch as it was recorded onto film so it could be remastered. Back when Voyager was recorded it was all filmed direct to VHS. the logic was it was only ever going to be broadcast on TV and the VHS tapes were more than good enough. Then we got HD, then we got 4K. and they had no option but to still show it in SD quality. ALWAYS plan for the future. you never know what you'll need the video for. in 10, 20, or 50 years' time. If you can film in 4K do it. Archive it, Storage is cheap. you can edit and release in HD but you open up options for the future.

Thanks, very interesting video since I also would like to start making videos someday. I've been thinking about that for a while now.. It does scare me a bit to be vlogging in public, to be honest.. People looking at me while I'm talking to a camera and all that.. And also I am not very good at editing videos (and I don't enjoy it eighter).. Do you really need a DSLR or mirrorless camera, or would a compact camera do as well at first? I'm using 2 Nikon D7100 cameras for photography and I love them for that, but they are rather complicated with filming.. So that's not an option, and that is why I'm kind of thinking about a compact camera for that..

The Julian Alps, source of the Soca River, were largely shaped by glaciers. As glaciers advance, they pulverize the rocks they pass over. The valleys left after the glaciers recede have a lot of that pulverized rock sediment, called glacial flour. That blue stream must have passed through a glacial valley with a lot of rock flour; the other stream's valley has little or none. If enough rock flour is carried into a glacial lake, it will turn the whole lake blue. A number of such blue lakes are well known in Canada and New Zealand. fyi G90 and G9 sensor is identical no difference only in video

I think switching video editing programs once you've learned one is silly, no matter which one you use. Keep it up to date and it will do what you need it to do. They all do the same thing, after all. All you'll do is spend a bunch of time learning something new and then find it does just what the old one does. Trust me, I'm old, I know things. By the way, 🐑 on the shelf saved the day again. He doesn't move much though, does he? Maybe you could teach him some simple tricks, like roll over or fetch or something. You probably don't need to teach him to play dead, he seems to already know that one. 👍🦆

Oh, good, informative video as always too.

Also if it was me, I'd be using a wireless lav mic for vlogging, that way it doesn't matter which direction the camera is pointed.

Hey, thanks for sharing! This was really helpful. I've always wondered how you record your vlogs...and I'm relieved to hear that it's not some kind of geeky rocket science. 👍

I have a Lumix FZ70 and I simply cannot figure out how to use all the features because the operation manual is like reading Chinese. It's written in English but there are symbols that are supposed to correspond with icons in the camera and it is absolutely confusing. So all I have been able to do is point and shoot using the auto settings. Kind of boring. I have watched several of your basic videos but I am still perplexed about settings, like focal length, ISO and app. and all those icons and things that are on the camera.

Ahh that's a shame, I'll maybe try and do some more basics videos soon 🙂

In spite of the bunch of new tech coming out, I've stayed with the G9. Glad I did. The new firmware update later this month is like getting a new camera! VLog is a paid update though, but 10bit internal recording.... WOW!! HGL too! Better auto focus!! I can't wait!

Sound is always a challenge. Regardless of the approach, there is a downside to shotgun mics, lavs directly to camera, lavs to external recorder... I mean, whatever you do, there is no perfect solution, sadly.

What I don't like about this camera! The fact you have to buy that 12-60 3.5 5.8 lens. The 14-35 2.8 is a much better lens. No body only option.
