I trained my Argentine Black and White tegu to walk on a leash. He LOVED being able to go walk in the grass and bask by the pool. I also used food every time I put the harness on him. After only a month, he was very accepting because he wanted his reward. 😀 He liked to also rest on a foam float in the pool and would dive in and swim to me and then go back to the float. I never took my tegu to the park or anything like that. I didn't want diseases other pets carry being a hazard and didn't want to risk someone being hurt because people who don't know a species don't always use common sense. We just hung out on our property. I can't tell you how much I miss that tegu! I'm still absolutely gutted he's gone now! After so many years, it's hard not having him here

I couldn’t help but tear up reading this. God bless you! I just bought a baby Nile Monitor who had two injuries. I knew if I did not get him he would end up dying because nobody else would buy an injured lizard animal from The reptile show and the people that had all these lizards did not take good care of them at all. So because of my career and how much I travel I could not keep him so I gave him to my friends that have an exotic animal park where he will be well taken care of. And when I’m in town once every five weeks I’ll go and babysit him and take him back to the house to spend time with him. He’s such a sweet little animal. I’ve never had one before and now I miss him even though it’s only been a day. I’ve had many snakes but never a monitor. They’re so special.

Nice video. I just got back from Bangkok and there are dozens and dozens of water monitors at Lumpini Park in the middle of the city! They are out running wild and you can get fairly close to them. They don't show much if any fear of people. There were a few monsters over 6 feet long!! Impressive!. Most of the lizards were about slinky's size and you could see the little ones in the trees.

Idk I think you could maybe train slinky to walk where you want through conditioning. Maybe tie some bells to that black feed bucket and shake the bells and every time you feed him a treat. After a while you might be able to get him to follow the bells as you walk. I've read of Komodo dragons being trained in similar ways I think it could maybe be done.

I took in an almost 5 foot male water monitor and have recently gotten him used to a harness. My trick to putting it on him is I only do it if he’s in his pond. Water seems to be his safe space, I can do almost anything to him with out him protesting if he’s in his pond, outside of his pond is another story lol.

When I was 15 or so I saw a guy walking two animals on leashes into a pet-co. One was a big male rottweiler. The other was the biggest (and first) monitor I've ever seen. It legitimately weighed as much as the dog did and had legs as thick as my arms. It was also super friendly. Little kids were able to pet it, and it didn't even try to eat any of the little dogs in the store. I don't remember what kind of monitor it was, (this was 25 years ago) but it was absolutely enormous.
@rosiehawtrey
@rosiehawtrey 3 жыл бұрын
Might conceivably have been a Komodo - some places allow them as pets and they're big - other possibilities are water monitor, blackthroat, whitethroat and nile. But the size you suggest makes me think varanus komodiensis.

I noticed at the end of the video as you walk by the turtle/tortoise enclosure, that they noticed you walking by and all began to walk (stampede? :) ) toward the edge of their enclosure ... possibly anticipating food. I found that to be extremely interesting. I also found your attitude towards, and your love for your reptiles, to be extremely touching. I really love that. By the way I have always maintained if there was MUCH more going on behind the eyes of traditional pets then we have any idea. I don't know why that should not be true of reptiles also. How about some videos of you feeding your larger reptiles?

My girlfriend had one of these little guys (he was a big boy). She called me in tears because he got out of his enclosure. I came to help find him. She was certain he couldn't be found. I decided to walk around the neighborhood and listen for either dogs going ballistic, or screaming women. Sure enough, I heard this lady screaming bloody murder, standing on top of her car. He was a good ol boy. I just went and picked him up (she looked at me like I had two heads or something). But I showed her what a teddy bear he was. I even got her to pet him. One of my favorite stories.
