This is great! I have three dogs and am currently walking all three separately, which is hugely time-consuming. I need this.

Excellent “walk” through of the process. I’m in HSTD and a good reminder of a whole process when working on individual games. Thank you! 🇨🇦

16:13 I love this, and have been using much of the same training over the years with my many dogs. I love all this homework and the fine tuning of the target work and excellent new cues with "side"( which I have used for either side, but will now be adding "close") there has been lots of home training using their names and places to wait for treats. I have had wonderful success over the years walking my multiple good dogs attached to my walking belt. Unfortunately, we have to choose remote locations and hope that we don't encounter dogs off leash (even when signage requires leashes). The dog(s) bursting out at us with no human in sight on a path in the woods gives me and my dogs little time or space to react safely. I pivoted to open roads and walking paths so we can see what's coming. But we have been "run up on" by loose dogs and the owner trailing yelling "he 's friendly" so many times that I am overwhelmed and unable to handle the chaos. My go to on my country road walks has been to carry a small plastic head long handle garden rake to fend off approaching dogs off leash. I call it the "long arm of the law" , but the humans with the offending dogs, think that I am the horrible human and MY dogs are clearly the bad ones because they are on leash and leashes indicate dogs that aren't friendly enough to walk off leash. 🤦 It is hard when YOU are the one who invests all the time into training well behaved dogs only to be confounded by people who see no value in your work and undo it by one catastrophic incident that they see you and your leashed dogs as the culprits. Any wisdom on these sorts of incidents. I no longer leash walk more than two of my dogs in public. I will take my most bomb proof dogs out in threes or fours in more remote areas with more space to gather our wits.

Michael Shikashio has an awesome video on that exact subject - when the sh__ hits the fan - defensive leash handling techniques. A lot of times if you have treats, you can throw them in the other dog's direction to give you time to get out of Dodge. Kikopup also has at least one video where she uses her voice to the owner as the dog's cue - pretty sure it's excuse me, can you please.... Susan has at least one as well where she tries to play with her dogs once they're safe, like it's no big deal. I usually get big, get in front of my Dobes, and tell the other dog and point to go home. I teach my own dogs a home cue as what do you tell a stray dog if you can't get to him? Go home. Now it's rare to see a loose dog where I am. Some municipalities have a 1,000.00 or 3,000.00 fine if caught. We had one case where a kid, who was afraid of dogs, was running away from a loose dog. The kid was hit and killed by a car. Wouldn't want to be anyone in that situation, but it never would have happened if the dog wasn't running loose. Hope that helps.

Hi, just found your channel. What is that lead/leash the the trainers have on their shoulders?

Hi @HilarySmejkal, thanks for the question and welcome to DogsThat! We are so happy to have you. We think you are referring to the Plush Carbon 9-ft fleece leash that is made by our good friends at 4MyMerles. They are awesome! 4mymerles.com/products/plush-carbon-9ft-training-leash If this doesn't look like the leash you're referring to, just comment with the timestamp and we will be happy to take a look. Thank you for the walking multiple dog podcast. Please can i ask hiw do i start using side and close? When i use perches i was using our release word to move from one to the other or from a sit as per building value for rz. Do i in effect swap the release word for eg "close" say when asked her to sit, then i move forward by the wall next to the perch. I know you disvuss it in the video, but imstill a bit unsure. I have tried doing pvots and spins to teach close and side but got stuck. I can see Kim with Belief using a perch in the video at home and you mention calling the dog into side or close then Apologies of im.not clear. Thank you

Susan, how do you teach your dogs to lift their paws, specifically the back paws?

This is brilliant! I have 3 dogs and struggle to walk them 1 is a puppy still the other two are 2 and 3. 2 is worried about what I'm doing. 3 is worried about if 1 and 2 is in season. And 1 is too lazy to speed up (literally).

My problem is getting my dog to relax when I'm doing this!! When he's at my side, he has to focus so hard on it, and he doesn't really get to destress at all. I spent probably 6 months trying to build up from 10 steps to 2 blocks and so on, and at his best he can stay at my side for about 10 minutes, but it's exhausting for him, and he needs tons of reinforcement. I keep hoping the walk itself will become reinforcing, but it's like the walk is negative punishment the whole time because he has so many ideas of what he wants to do, and the answer to all of them is "no." I tried reinforcing him when he was looking around at the environment while walking slowly at my side, but it didn't really lead to him being able to relax like I hoped. It's almost like relaxing and walking slowly are incompatible behaviours for him. It seems like I technically got the behaviour I wanted, but walks are never relaxing for him until he gets let off the leash, or if we're offleash, until he gets to run and smell random stuff at will. I have an offleash park really close to my house, but it would be so nice to be able to take him on walks with my family and stuff without having to train him the whole time and go home after 10 minutes. Are dogs ever just unsuited to walking on leash? He is an extremely tall dog, almost as tall as a great dane, so maybe his stride is just a bit long for really being able to enjoy the slow pace.

Hi there! Please check out our full playlist on Loose Leash Walking here: kzbin.info/aero/PLphRRSxcMHy1mGMfdVKXq_hiJ27Ej1shW. In episode #76 we give some tips for games that might help redirect your dog's attention and in #112 we discuss Trigger Stacking and your dog being over threshold. Those might be good starting points.

14:53 Should you still feed the dog who's name you said? Feels unfair to "punish" the one who's doing it right, haha.

Yes, go ahead and feed the dog whose name was said but then stop the game if there is "cookie snatching" happening.
