hi there :] if anyone wants to answer it'd be appreciated but no pressure of course, but im 17 and got diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at about 14, and I've been wondering for a while if a cane would help my legs not get tired when walking, because sometimes it makes it that if I've walked a lot during the day or gone up the stairs in quick succession i physically can't for a little while. i talked with my doctor about it and he said it'd probably be helpful for me, but i think i still struggle with some internalized anxiety about it, so a second opinion would be nice!

If your legs get tired quickly and your doctor thinks it would help, it's probably worth using at least on occasion. Yes, at your age, there will probably be some teenagers who think they're funny by making comments about it, but if it helps you feel better and move better, who cares about their opinion. Good luck!

This is very helpful. I’m 2 months away from hip replacement but experiencing lots of hip pain which has led to knee pain. I’ll use this video to relieve the pain flare ups.

Thank you for demonstrating walking with a cane. I frequently use both cane and walker. My pain and discomfort come from my weakness in my lower back along with major balance issues. Standing or walking for a substantial amount of time causes a lot of pain in lower back. Enjoying your videos!

Thank you so very much for this excellent description and demonstration-i had pretty much the same issue as ElPasoTubeAmps and now im looking at Total Hip Replacement on the right side. So I bought a Leki Legend Carbon walking pole. And now I know how to use it!

Good information about walking with a cane. I especially like analogies you use in videos to clarify things, like using the references to high school physics & the fulcrum.

Thank you. I am definitely right handed and much stronger on the right side but my right knee is the problem. I am 74 and had perfect knees until maybe two months ago and now do PT and have had the cortosone shot by a MD. Got perfect after the shot and I started working again and now am back hobbling around. It was a pain 8/10 pretty much all the time including trying to sleep. The cortosone shot cured that but now I am back to pain in every step - fortunately no pain sleeping. Thanks for demonstating the walk with a cane. I will have to get used to that and I bet get a sore left arm... 🙂

Thank you for your helpful teaching. I cannot use a cane due to a hand injury. When needed I use my walker, this seems to help distribute the weight. I can go fast and keep up on a walker.

Doctor, Thank you for a GREAT cane usage video! Does anything change if my cane has a quad base instead of a single stick contact to the ground?
@More4Life
@More4Life Жыл бұрын
The only difference is that you want to make sure you get all 4 points on the ground. If you move the cane too far forward, the back 2 points contact the ground before the front 2 points.

I’ve had recurring knee and hip pain in both legs ever since I quit soccer in 7th grade, I’m a high school senior now and can’t run without quickly having knee pain that causes me to limp. I’m preparing for the future by learning how to live when things inevitably become worse 😅 I also have scoliosis and pcos
@More4Life
@More4Life Жыл бұрын
As a senior in high school, you're way too young to be worrying about how to live in the future as you decline. Rather, look for what you can do in the present so that your future is BETTER (things won't inevitably become worse).

Glad you enjoyed the video. It is funny all the comments about the outlets though. 😀 I honestly don't think I've ever used them, so I never took notice until people started mentioning it. "How to Overcome ADHD without Medication" would be a great video, but that's a little outside my area of expertise.

If your right hip is arthritic stiff & painful, should you learn to walk putting left leg first - thus body weight on leg then bring right leg to the left avoiding body weight on right?
@More4Life
@More4Life Жыл бұрын
You're going to have you bodyweight on the rightvleg anyway when you put the left first. In order to take a step with one leg you have to put weight on the other. Best option with a cane for right hip arthritis is usually holding the cane in the left hand and moving the cane at the same time as the right leg
@patthompson8591
@patthompson8591 Жыл бұрын
@More4Life Thank you. I thought putting/driving the painful right foot fwd has a grinding affect on the right hip when the body is propelled fwd. The body wgt is held by both/mainly the left leg as it's *left first & right together not ahead, left first right together repeated - not the normal gaiit* .? Just wondered if that is one answer OR is that a waste of time & bad for the right leg? 🙏
@More4Life
@More4Life Жыл бұрын
@@patthompson8591 I would advise people to walk with as normal of a gait pattern as possible whenever possible, so probably a waste of time and/or bad in my opinion. Just realize that even when you walk leading with the left as you suggest, your right leg is holding your bodyweight while you're moving the left leg forwards.

What if after u had a hip replacement on the rt hip n its already stronger after 5 months n now ur being told ur left hip will need to be replaced too..what side would u walk with the cane???
@More4Life
@More4Life 2 ай бұрын
You'd typically use a cane in the opposite hand of the side you're trying to offload. So if the left hip is weaker and hurts more, most likely you'd want to use the cane in the right hand.

I may agree with you when the hip is involved...it seems different when the knee is involved...you said nothing about which side to use the cane on when the knee is involved....
@More4Life
@More4Life 9 ай бұрын
You're right... that was not specifically mentioned. The answer is the same and for the same reasons though: using the cane on the opposite side offloads the sore knee as well.
