I'm 65 with a few health issues. I can't use anything scented or with certain chemicals, benzene, etc anymore. I discovered that when I wash my hair (lather, rinse, repeat as you suggest)with very gentle non toxic shampoo, and then use nothing but watered-down apple cider vinegar for a rinse, I get soft waves that last a few days. I generally have 2b-2c waves, with medium length layers and a fringe/bangs. I used to fuss with products, but apparently I don't need to! 😄

AG Recoil is so nice! Just to add...I bought it last year and per reviews I had seen people were mentioning it has a very bad smell in the past before they repackaged and reformulated it. It now has a soft vanilla scent and performs very well.

My holy grail combo for my fine wavy to curly hair: that AG shampoo and conditioner, Recoil, Innersense I Create Definition, and one of two gels: AG hard or Ouidad in red bottle. I diffuse to about 80% dry and I get days out of a wash day. In the morning I do a quick water spray, scrunch and I am good to go.

I find my hair curls all the way to the root when it's adequately moisturized. Not putting conditioner on the roots is a recipe for dry, frizzy roots for me.

I have to agree. It's not a bad look, but the curls did not bounce up as much as they have with some of the others more recently. For a day that you want looser and softer, looks like it would do a great job.

Just an FYI this shampoo and conditioner contain Arnica Montana which is a very common allergen. It is in the ragweed family so if you are interested in these products but have a ragweed allergy you might want to reconsider or try a sample if they offer those. I can't use products with this ingredient and manufacturers sometimes sneak it in to to various products.

Recoil, liquid effects and a smasters mousse/gel finish, is a great line up for me. Your hair came out really pretty. It’s a different look from other wash days but still great.

Mousse gel is a tad drying by itself and performs better for me in conjunction with a moisturizing gel such as Treluxe Hi! Definition or Ouidad Advanced Climate Control stronger hold gel under it

I typically do a full style on wash days (meaning shampoo, conditioner, leave in, cream and gel or mousse). I have mostly wavy hair with a few curlier parts in the front. Sometimes if I am lucky, I will even get some spirals around my face. However, once in a while I kind of like my hair to be wavy with a looser curl. I found a product from AG Haircare that is called Beach Bomb. It gives my hair a soft wave and I love it for an easy single styler.

I always use a leave in or cream under the mousse gel, and find the mousse works better if I shake it up before pumping it out. 🙂

I jave found that foam and mousse really do better when paired with other stylers. Like I love the Verb Foaming Gel and on its own it's nice and lightweight, but not super defined and is pretty stretched out on day 2. If I pair it with a medium hold gel, fantastic!

I cannot get this mousse to work for me. I had such high hopes. My hair just ends up frizzy kind of like uou described with the “wispies”. Love the shampoo and conditioner though.

I love how my curls look when I style upside down, but the hair on top of my head always looks wonky like it doesn’t know where to go. Do you have any suggestions to help style the top of my head? At the moment I’m thinking I need a cut that helps it to lay better, but beyond that I’m stumped. Thanks for all you do to help us wavy/curly girls ☺️💜

I deal with the same issues. For some time now, I've been using the Smasters method where you diffuse your hair to 75% dry upside down. Then you add another styler (I use gel) and direct your hair into its final position. Of course this doesn't always work perfectly. Sometimes the curls are already set wrong, but I've learned to go with it.

Did anyone else have this happen? When I used the the AG curl fresh definer a few years ago when Manes by Mell collabed with them on it. I loved it it gave tons of hold and definition it was fabulous and then i repurchased it and the packaging was different it was not the same at all. It was even more liquidy and didnt do much of anything for my hair. Whatever they did ruined it. And I was so sad. Still am. I want it to go back.

It’s now affecting all my joints, and the pain is horrendous! Tuesday was the first day that naproxen or Tylenol wouldn’t touch it😢 I had an allergic reaction to methotrexate, so waiting for the next steps. The options are daunting! I’m 41, and it was a big surprise, out of the blue! Hope you’re recovering okay ❤

I love AG balance shampoo and conditioner with apple cider vinegar. I have oily scalp but highlighted hair and I love that formula on my hair. I also use recoil and curl trigger. Topped with either a foam or gel.

The amount of brushing you are doing to your fine hair while wet is cringy. I have fine, wavy hair and my hairstylist said I need to STOP brushing the conditioner through in the shower. The amount of shedding after I stopped doing that has been cut almost in 1/2! Hair is most fragile when wet. You really want to cut down how much you are handling it when wet and brushing that many times is no bueno. My hair health is SO much better since I stopped that.

Although Abby Young doesn’t have wavy hair, she touches on this quite a bit through her hair journey. Wet hair is way more fragile & I’m in my 50’s so making a lot of the changes she has talked about have been game changers and stopping brushing the conditioner through my hair while wet has been eye opening. You definitely know a lot about wavy hair and I enjoy your videos but you also have shorter and younger hair. Brushing like that is a recipe for disaster for older women. My hair stylist of 20 years finally convinced me to put down the brush in the shower along with listening to Abby Young. By the way….i loved your video on refreshing the curls! I opted for #5 and it was perfection.

​@@fairfaxvienna4099 she uses products with LOTS of slip and never brushes it without that. That's the recommended way from many in the curly hair community (from influences to professional hairstylists). Hope this helps!

I agree to this. I got inspired by Courtney and started using the Tangle Teezer brush to brush conditioner through my hair and style it. I experienced more shedding in the shower. I kept at it and 3 months later experienced the worst pain in my roots. It was so tender and I couldn't for the life of me figure out why. The way I sleep with my hair was the same, my products were the same and the way I tied my hair was the same. The culprit was brushing my wet hair! I stopped doing that and Lo and behold the tenderness on my scalp vanished. I only use fingers and wide tooth comb to detangle my hair. That's it. People may not like what you have to say but with fine hair brushing can be quite damaging long-term. Speak the truth sis!
