I was a Machinist Mate 1st Class in the Navy and on my last ship I stick welded on 600PSI steam lines for repair and valve change outs. The Hull Techs (welders) kept saying they weren't "qualified" and once I showed the Chief Engineer (full Commander) that I could do it he relegated all of that to me. Never did figure out why the HT's refused to do it. My welds never failed btw and passed closer inspection when we had yard repairs and refits.

Interesting video, never saw or dealt with that type of material before myself. I like how you show mistakes when they occur and ways to correct them when they happen.

Here in the UK we weld CU/Ni alloys with mix gas of either 2.5% Hydrogen 97.5% Argon or for heavy wall 70/30 CU/NI or for Monel alloys try 5% Hydrogen 95% Argon the hotter arc and cleaning from the hydrogen reaĺly make a big difference
@michaelsays7131
@michaelsays7131 4 жыл бұрын
yeah i agree, i actually weld alot of 70/30 CuNi and i prefer to weld it with 95/5 Ar/Hydrogen..i find that with that hot gas mixture the puddle runs alot like stainless. very active and watery puddle, it also just weld much cleaner with 95/5..

Also used a similar mix for Duplex Stainless.

@@djyul Did not find pure Argon all that good for heavy wall Duplex pipework, a small percentage of Hydrogen improved weld puddle fluidity when using semi-auto TIG but that was 40 years ago..
@OminousObelisk
@OminousObelisk 2 жыл бұрын
@@MegaBoilermaker hydrogen and duplex doesn't mix actually. The water content in the hydrogen can cause pit corrosion/pitting and eventually pipe rot. You don't want that 😜

I weld a ton of this stuff. Have you ever tried the RN60 Copper Nickel wire? Far superior to the RN67 in my opinion. Runs much cleaner and less dead.

I think rn67 welds much better than rn60. Though we only usually use rn60 for cuni to carbon

We had 2 types when I was in, we called one copper-nickel, and the other nickel-copper, and the difference was that nickel-copper had a higher nickel concentration.

Where would this be used? I'm very use to seeing pipe being back filled so the root has a more cap like appearance on the inner diameter as opposed to a sort of groove look such as this joint has. Thanks very much sharing your knowlegde! God bless!
