Here in the UK I have a Montauk 150. My respect to both Jon K for a beautiful 230 Dauntless Whaler, to you for your excellent work and videos. My best refurbishment job so fsr has been to my boats black rub rail. Boston Whaler have yt vid on this, but it goes all by hand you mask of top and bottom of the rub rail then with several grit grades of paper stepping up from course 100,s up to the 1000’s. Just back and fourth it is a long job dusty bits everywhere. Then finish off with Acetone rubbed over the RR to just seal in the surface. Dress it with a nice matt finish or gloss trim or car wheel dressing and boom the look is amazing and with some hard work yet really, little in cost of materials. It is a great refresh to the look of your boat. Cheers

I'm a Marine tech by trade... but detailed for awhile when I first got into the field, and with a buddy with his own detailing business in Florida. Great video!! I snagged most of these products and had to start with hand wet sanding 320, 600, 1000. Other than that followed the steps. Boat is a 98 Hewes redfish 18 that looked like it has never been waxed or polished. It came out looking like new! Wish I could upload the photos!! Thx again for sharing!!! When I get bad gel coat jobs I first do an acid wash to remove calcium build up, helps so much when I start sanding and buffing , game changer. Good job man. 👏

Ive been a detailer for 23 years now and it looks like you really have it down well.I use the Rupes and the Makita orbital with a double sided wool pad.I use Sonax compounds and they work great, little dust and don't dry out fast.Also 99 percent of my jobs are now ceramic coated, that stuff is amazing.

Ever tried Smoove products? If not, try just 1 bottle of the pro cut. I have brought some boats that were overcooked in the Florida sun back to life with that stuff and a wool pad. Loved the video and your attention to detail is impressive! I do restorations (mostly classic Makos) and seems like biggest part of restoration once structural and cosmetic repairs are made, im just an underpaid, glorified and well...broke detailer. Lol. I kind of do what ThatBoatGuy does, however, he finds all the good deals on facebook market.

Great advice on watching out for the polishing pad getting caught on something and the polisher going wild. A friend of mine was using a big drill that caught on something and the drill twisted and he broke his wrist. I would not want to get hit in the face with one of those!

Hey there! Meguires oxidation removal is terrible for removing oxidation. It is no where near Ardex 600. Ardex will work way better. I’m not a fan of Meguires anything

Beautiful job. I had my boat detailed this spring and the black hull came out great, but the gentleman told me that the white topsides and interior were too far oxidized to restore. When I saw your process it made me think that I was mis-informed...as long as you don't go through the gelcoat, it can be brought back. What are your thoughts on this matter?

Yes you are correct. However, if the gel coat is too thin you can’t restore it because you might go right through it, that’s what your detailer may have been trying to tell you

Menzerna 400 is more of a polish on gel coat boats! You can use it many times without any issues! Also, you can use menzerna 2500 for lighter polishing

Hey bro, typically to get the faded/raised gelcoat that were used to be behind old decals and boot stripes typically need to be wet, sanded buffed, then polish tube, then match the rest of the gelcoat and worked out

Awesome videos! I've got a 10 year old 21ft Tidewater bay boat I've owned since new and have some yellowing, especially on the console. I can't wait to try this! A couple of questions.. 1) What speed do you run the Abralon pads? 2) I have dual chrome looking vinyl stripes running along the water line. Can I run over these and the decals with all of the steps or should I avoid them with the Abralons? 3) Can I use 303 Fabric on vinyl cushions? 4) What boat do you personally have? Menzera doesn’t have a super heavy cut like Ardex that I have found. Menzerna did just come out with a marine line, I haven’t tried it yet. But maybe try there Heavy cutting marine compound

Yes it can! Don’t do a thick layer, you do not need much. Just a thin layer will be great. If you do a thick layer In the sun it can be hard to take off

I only wish I had the skills to get my recently purchased 1985 Tiara Pursuit looking that good. I'm dealing with good gel coat under old stickers and heavy oxidation on the rest. It is completely fine to sand the hull. We just were not doing that to this boat. Sanding and correcting the under side hull is a lot of work.

The Ardex 800 VG is OK. I just don’t really use it that often. If you have a lot of oxidation you will need to do the 600 on the heavy cut wool pad.

Love all your videos! I have a boat that needs to be sanded and brought back to life. I have a DA(harbor freight) but I do not have a rotary. Is it possible to get the high shine without running a rotary on it?

Hi Tony! Yes you will need a rotary for the heavy compounding and polishing steps. In this case, the only thing the DA will be used for is the wet sanding and applying the wax/sealant at the end

Hey LunaSea! Yes waxing with the white foam pad is fine, or the microfiber pad works good too! I’m personally not a fan of Meguires. I use all Starke Yacht care Products! Pretty much on how dry it is, if it’s really chalky I will dry. If a little dull not a lot of chalk I will wet sand

When your hull is very chalky, would you dry sand with 800 and then go wet with 1000, and if so, when do you know to make the switch to 1000, will a shine start with the 800? Thank you!

Alright. i am all in. I bought rotary polisher and every product you recommended. I am trying to turn my 1998 Sailfish back to a showroom shine. You did not mention much about the rub rail. My white vinyl rub rail has some scuff marks and some yellowing. any suggestions?

Use acetone on a white rag. It will come right out

I'd like to see how to properly do an aluminum boat. We just got a used one and some point in its life it looks like someone either tried to buff it or maybe steel wool it and left swirl marks. Just curious if you can do anything for that and what a good sealant or whatnot would be.

I am purchasing a 1999 Key West Boat 2220 CC. The in and out needs restoration. Do I need to wet sand or can I do a good wash and then go into the Starke R and then the Starke Medium? or the Menzerna? or the Presta Gel Coat compound? So many products, not sure the best order of product to use with having to restore. Also, what is the best way to remove old decals and if I am going to replace decals when is the best time to apply back on the boat? is it after the compound? Trying to be on a budget. What should be done with the bottom up to the waterline?

Hey! It took a few days from start to finish. Don’t remember exactly how long as it was a few years back 😎 If I remember, I did not do the bottom. The bottom typically isn’t standard, if the customer is specifically paying for it, then I will do it, but it’s not covered under my typical pricing structure.

Drake, thanks for another great video. Drake, I feel a bit vulnerable around boat graphics and decals, especially those that have custom printed (as opposed to lettering). I’m aware that vinyldecals differ in their composition, but do you have any general advice about polishing (and maybe sanding) around these basting things? Pleased help. Gratitude!

I have 15mm Throw DA, a 8mm Throw DA, and mini DA. Will those be enough to get rid of marring from Wetsanding with the right pad? I need to wed sand our haul in places for the first time, and pretty scared of screwing it up.

I personally would not use a da to try to remove sanding marks, It can be done but it will take about double the time and skill. If you don’t want to buy an expensive rotary, go get a cheaper one from harbor freight for like $60 that will do the job just fine. You’ll need a wool pad as well.
