Awesome tip this can save so much stress and headache nothing worse than spotting scratches from previous grits at a later stage in the process then having to go back

Fantastic tech tip! I was pleased to find this video today but I also enjoy watching those vintage “Shut Yer Face Garage” videos chocked full of useful techniques and seasoned with humor and stuff like that… Thanks Matt and Hello to the entire SYFG Crew!

I do have a question. I am sanding the 2k primer on the roof of the car with 320 but looks like i need a couple of more coats of 2k, is it okay to spray over the 320 grit or do I need to sand with a lower grit before spraying the 2k primer?

Good tip, makes alot of sense. If it works for primer... it can work the same on clear coat

Sweet tip. Thanks. I don't wet sand too often but will give it a try. I wonder if that would work when I do headlights. Have to make sure all the black is gone before coating them.

Oh yes, the exact way I do it. For sure the guide coat will tell you what is going on. And I like the Mirka as well.

I have never had a problem getting my clear coat polished to where i had to use guide coat or go back and get scratches out. That being said when it comes to the buffing part, having good quality pads made for the machine type you use makes a big difference. Lake country, rupes, or meguires pads. Wool pads only do well with rotary polishers or short throw gear driven. For long throw 21mm DA microfiber or foam cutting pads work best. Your pad choice matters more than compound though I use 3D or Sonax compounds

Great tip ,can you use the spray guide coat as well
@SYFGARAGE
@SYFGARAGE 2 жыл бұрын
I'd be hesitant to use a spray paint guide coat as you never know what the solvents could do on fresh clear. Also unless you sprayed it on super heavy, its not going to get down into all the scratches like the powder does when you rub it on.

Yupp learned my lesson. Painted my engine bay black last week. Came out pretty good(should have left it alone) stupid me thinking I can wet sand and polish. Nope I kept coming back trying to get scratches out and I’ve burned through it. Now I’m frustrated thinking of repainting

Yea with the da you usually get that Velcro little plastic hooks making da swirl marks,the paper is 6 inch and the Velcro da pad is 6 inches,but the little plastic Velcro stick out a little .So in my case i cut 1/4 inch off the Velcro on the pad,I dont cut the whole pad,just 1/4 around the velcro,so the sandpaper is 6 inch,but velcro on pad is 5 and 3/4.just to play it safe.

Thats why a lot of us use an interface foam pad between the disk and backing plate. When i get up to 3000 grit and 5000grit i use my 5" Dynabrade with 6" 3M trizact disc since they are thick disc that does not require the interface pad in-between

Gunn try this. Thanks. If all I got is 3m will it still help? Or not worth trying
@SYFGARAGE
@SYFGARAGE 2 жыл бұрын
I’ve used it. You can try it. But the mirka definitely works better. It’s been so long I can’t remember what about the 3m didn’t work. I kinda remember it being greasy and not sanding well.

I'll add that to my shopping list. I've always circled back a couple dozen times to get scratches out... 1/10 would not recommend that approach.
