Loved this video and you totally helped me repair my washer. HOWEVER....you never re-installed the water break. Luckily I was paying attention. Thanks.

Use a paracord or nylon string to wrap around tub and back panel. This really helps when you go back & forth with upright and laid back. All these years with no help, you learn. thanks for the video.

I found a substitute oil for that transmission. The OEM Whirlpool oil is $30-$35.00 for 15 ounces. Go to walmart, Autozone or Advanced Auto Parts. Get a quart of Hyperlube Oil Supplement for around $8.00. A quart is 32 ounces. You only need 15 MEASURED ounces for that transmission. Take some Diesel and an old paint brush and clean the old oil out. Measure 15 ounces and pour in the Hyperlube. Our machine actually runs quieter now.

Forum said you could use Supertech Gear oil from Wally World 80W-90, it's only $5. They also said thicker oil bases would make the washer run more quiet, but it would also cause things like the motor to run harder and hotter.

I really appreciate you guys and these videos. And I appreciate the comments. I found that I couldn't remove the tub then figured I didn't really need to. I guess removing the inner tub reduces the weight of laying the unit on it's back. Anyway, I was able to do something I never would have THOUGHT about attempting before. Thanks again!

What about just replacing the seal without opening and draining the gearcase by using gravity to keep the oil inside? Mine just started leaking a little. There's still plenty of oil in there.
@07ow3 жыл бұрын
Kinda fun to take apart. I just did it on my 1998 Kenmore 80 series washer since it had a minor oil leak. The old oil had lots of dirt/grain on the bottom. I filled up the bottom of the gearcase till it started pouring out. Hopefully I didn't overfill it, was 16 oz.

Seazed spanner nuts are the bane of my existence
@jky38894 жыл бұрын
I've only done the spanner nut once & had to use a dremel to cut it, then pry it away from the threaded shaft. The spanner nut is some kind of soft pot metal, so it's pretty easy to do. You don't have to cut all the way thru it, just as far as possible without cutting the steel tub or anything. Then when you pry, what remains below the cut will break. Also, in case it needs to be said, make the cut where the drive block has the slot.

Yeah, Clean the basket, tub and top ring. Also, the wiring harness connect on the transmission; squeeze the connector from the back side with your fingers to release. Using a screwdriver on the wire side of a connector is asking for a skint wire. Other wise, another descent Whirlpool Direct Drive Disassembly, Assembly video.

Oh good grief. You don't need to remove the case, spanner nut, drum or any of that. That is a TON of unnecessary steps. All you need to remove is the agitator.
@williammchugh43613 жыл бұрын
Very true, but if the seal on your gearcase is That Old you probably should replace the tub seal as well. Sucks, because I have to get a spanner wrench just to remove it. I've already tried removing it without one and it's impossible. I have a bad feeling it's going to be hard to remove With The Wrench. I'm going to keep soaking that thing with liquid wrench!

Mine also has a hole underneath the gearbox with a metal piece inside that almost looks like a drain plug but it's not keyed for anything I have seen, although it is notched. the main loss of oil has actually been through this location (whatever it is) and the shaft seal. Have you ever seen a Whirlpool gearbox like this? My main seal shows no oil loss.

Why you remove the tub fo? You don’t have to do that to service transmichagin.
@user-neo716655 жыл бұрын
no crap, lay the thing down on the side and the trans pulls out from the bottom.

James Lester- Very true , but having repaired hundreds of these machines I can tell you that they have an affinity for building up a stinky , bacteria laden sludge on the inside of the outer tub that makes it well worth taking apart whenever you do a repair. Even if you don't need a repair . I would take that inner tub out once a year just to clean it.

How in the world does everybody get the suspension springs back on by themselves at home?? The way they're curved back into themselves, I can't get them to pull out and then hook on to the brackets, and especially those tiny eye brackets at the frame! I'm getting close to my 'tool throwing mode' here. Help!!

What problem's would one have if it leaks oil? Would the washer not spin properly?
@brucealan86903 жыл бұрын
It will spin correctly until the gear box oil that is leaking form the seal saturates and causes the clutch to slip.

If oil is leaking at the seal, why not just add more oil when you pull out the old seal? Then you wouldn't have to remove the whole transmission.
@TheNYgolfer5 жыл бұрын
Jason Morrell- The oil is very heavy gear oil. Even if it was a light oil , you would never get it to go past the bushing and the shaft. The gap is too tight. If you could get it to go in, how much would you add?
@istvanmeissler22382 жыл бұрын

Way too many steps to replace the seal. Leave the shell on the washer, lay the washer on it’s side and after removing the agitator pull out the trans from the bottom.

My 2005 kenmore elite top loader spins but takes forever to get up to full speed and doesn’t get the clothes dry enough, so I always have to run the spin cycle 3 or more additional times no matter how big or small the load is. Any idea? Could it be a bad clutch, faulty motor capacitor, bad bearings, or weak motor possibly? Every google search leads me to nowhere.
@jky38894 жыл бұрын
Also, if it's leaking water & the water is getting on the clutch, that will cause the clutch to slip & the thing won't spin & the clothes will be wet.
@lastotallyawesomebleach2044 жыл бұрын
J KY I’ve never seen any moisture on the floor around the machine after using it so I think we’re good on that. Anyway, I got a new machine recently and rarely use this one anymore, mainly just for dirty work clothes. It works fine with very small loads. I will probably attempt to fix it someday and if I do, it will probably outlast the new washer.
