The thing I think is worth saying is focus less on winning straight away, but on achieving some goals. For example, focusing on score reliably game to game. It can be even something like 5 points more goal every game, but actually focusing on improving will bring more benefit than just seeing things like win/lose situation. Another goal could be: ok, now I can score points, next game I will focus on point denial if able. Maybe my approach can be sometimes a bit slow and without patience feeling like no improvement at all, but it worked for me.

This. So much this. When I first started out I thought the only way to win was to clear the other player from the board. And while that’s the case in what, a handful of missions, it shouldn’t be the end goal. Especially for new players. You end up missing out or struggling to grasp the objective missions when that’s what wins the game majority of the time

What improved my win rate was coming up with an army that fits your game plan and try to execute that same plan every game. You’ll learn how to adapt that same game plan for every mission and you’ll learn how to improve it with every game. You’ll learn how to strengthen and support the weaknesses with small unit changes. Like Auspex said, just lots of practice. :)

As someone who has done well at tournaments, the thing that helped me the most was asking my opponent if they thought I could have done anything differently or better. Usually they will have noticed something I didn't, and vice versa. Might be harder in a tournament when you're strapped for time, but appreciate Auspex Tactics pointing this out.

I would like to point out an absolute beauty of a blog for this purpose called “Goonhammer”! They have an amazing start competing series (Just google “Goonhammer start competing” and you’ll get an index) that has guides on all aspects of competitive play, including: List building, deployment, math-hammer, tournament prep, General tactics, and more! They’re even sorted by skill level. They also have articles for each individual army. Though they’re not always updated to 9th (all of the marine armies are, not sure about the others) they all have solid information on how the army plays, even if the meta stuff isn’t always accurate.
@Smilomaniac Жыл бұрын
1. Leave most of your ego at the door and make it your goal to have a good time - You can learn the game in a short while but it takes years to understand. This isn't a reaction time MOBA where you pick up the game and just have a knack for it, there are multiple ways in 40k that you can be good, whether it's strategically, mathematically and/or with abstract understanding (synergies, combos, optimal stats etc). Learn to lose with grace and learn how to recognize what you did wrong. Don't blame the dice and don't blame "the balance", because this is an asymmetrical game and not everyone has an equal chance (and it'll never be the case). But, do try your best of course. 2. Simple units means it's simple to see where things go right or wrong. Don't build an optimized net-list, build a strong core (triplicates of units) and work from there, where you add or detract according to what you enjoy playing. If you find that you never seem to be able to move off of your side of the table (and that it's a problem for you) you might need more bikes/skimmers/speeders/jump troops. If you find you don't like how squishy your troops are, maybe you need more of them or more elite troops. (You don't have to buy everything to start with, you can proxy models to test what you want to build and go from there) 3. Simple doesn't mean bad - Not being special means it's not a problem to lose them and when you have, let's say 3x3 Outriders (315 pts), that's 36 wounds at T5 who are very mobile and absolutely shred guard equivalents. If there are none of those, you can use them to screen off your obsec and objectives. Reivers are 16pts a piece, meaning 30 for 480pts. Despite being called "useless" if you flood the table with 6x5 of them coming in from all angles (free deepstrike/grapple) that's 60W your opponent has to chew through which enhances what the rest of your army does. 3 Redemptor Dreadnoughts are solid firing platforms with a lot of wounds. On and on it goes. 4. Cheat sheet - Write down your stratagems with short descriptions and page number (so you can check if necessary). You can lay them out like wahapedia does, so you can see which ones are relevant for defending against combat or shooting, for enhancing your own or for general use. Write down what your characters do to remind you of their auras, abilities or enhanced stats (warlord traits/relics). 5. You don't play to kill, you play to win - You win on objectives/victory points. It's a viable strategy to table your opponent, but you're only going to do that if you have a meta army or one that luckily happens to have what's currently strong because GW didn't adjust the points well or what have you. Most of the time you're just not going to be able to make a list that consistently wipes your opponent off the table even if you had perfect sight lines. You can strategize around punishing your opponent for moving forward with reserves/deepstrike, swamping them with chaff or making them overreact to one unit while being sneaky with others, but at the end of the day it's all about the primaries and secondaries. 6. Characters are cool but unless you can get them to do what they're good at, they're mostly a waste of points. That chunky 130pts Ironfather? Kind of a mid model that does a little bit of everything and nothing that well. He's best at sitting in a corner buffing a unit of troops and a dreadnought, that's it. That's a lot of points for very little. Unless you have a delivery method to get them into combat or you need them to enable and buff your other units, characters usually aren't worth it, especially not named ones. These points are meant for beginners or people who are starting a new army. This WILL increase your odds of winning but in order to win tournaments you need foresight and experience and you need experience to have meaningful foresight. I can tell you that a strong prediction from me for 10th is that vehicles that are good at taking out other vehicles will become a staple (provided vehicles in general aren't costed too high in points, in which case people generally won't bring vehicles, as has been the case for most of 8th and 9th). So getting at least one tank with high strength/damage guns will likely be a good investment. The reason being that GW has shown that a meltagun is only on par with a rhino's toughness and that you generally don't get much bigger anti-material weaponry on foot sloggers. Best of luck! Happy hobbying!

Thank you for going into this. Here is my take: Don't try to get all the models for even your own army. Get the core of what you need, learn your and the army's play style, then fill as you need. I'd say 93% of players are helpful; the rest are newbies or take the game too seriously. You'll know which they are by the movement phase. Lol. Talk to them. This community is A+ on helpfulness! Finally, read the rule books germaine to your army like it's your job. It'll help you play better instead of spending 10 minutes reminding yourself how fast your Terminators are. A massive thing you can do to improve your game is to remember to use your strats, and not just cp reroll for every cp. Using the strats is often like loading the dice, making cp reroll one of the weakest ones. I'm not saying to never use it, just that there is a time and place for it, and that there are often better options. Also, Everytime you lose you should always ask what they would have done different if they were you. Or if you win, still talk with them about avoiding some of your mistakes.
@RSBurgener Жыл бұрын
The impression I've gotten of late 9th edition is that unless you bring all the right, on-meta stuff from your codex, you're probably in for a slaughter. Even if you wanna play casual, the game can often force the meta on you if you want to have any hope of winning. It's that lethal these days.
@DollClockheart Жыл бұрын
I disagree from my own experience. I've played plenty of games that weren't all on-meta, even in a more competitive environment, and had victories and close games. Meta usually only matters if its a proper abuse case (such as Tzeentch Flamers), otherwise its very much mostly for high-level play.
@SarajevoKyoto Жыл бұрын
@DollClockheart I disagree from my own experience. It's "meta or go home", a single unit not pulling its weight for a turn is enough for a "Game Over" with how lethal 9th has become.
@absolutfreak5012 Жыл бұрын
It varies greatly depending on your army, your opponent's army, and how you build your lists. Yes, if you're going into the competitive scene, you're going to be definitely pushed in the direction of dealing with the current meta. (I can relate, after attempting some Bad Moon ork lists at a few tournaments) However, it's very possible to have some great games with non optimal units if both you and your opponent are on board for casual list builds. The same Bad Moons that fell on their face at a GT gave me some very fun games in the escalation crusade that we ran at the FLGS. Communication is key.

"Why can't my lazy jank list beat hard-work refined comp list" The question for the ages, apparently. A good/Great players in 9E, according to them and what Ive seen with following and discussing with certain players and teams that are pretty good locally, can bring anything and go 3-2 in a tournament setting. The pros believe the different between a 5-0 is usually playing for long days with zero misplays more than any "winning at list building." There are some lists that don't even spam max-takeable of one unit, and instead spread a lot of 1-off squads out that go 5-0 this ed. This ed is definitely a skill issue much more than any other edition I have played - and I started in 3E

Macro tactics is called a strategy. Smaller level micro tactics are just called tactics 😊. You actually said it a couple of times but if you follow formal military strategy vs tactics, strategy is a grander big picture concept. Whilst a tactic is a smaller usually on the ground concept. American military strategy usually involves massive air superiority while tactics are more often decentralized to individual units to make decisions.

In my circle of friends, my win/loss ration is probably 3 out of 10 games I win. However, I feel a good reason for that is we're not playing objectives. We're building legit armies but we're just doing open play. I've suggested we start playing objectives but some of us are still learning the game. So we haven't made the change. There's also 10th coming out soon. The biggest issue is one of us plays Aeldar. Since he does not need to hold any objectives, he is never out in the open. I think he's only lost one match so far and that was only because he was experimenting with a new army build. Another reason is my nephew collects death guard and everyone does the same thing. They walk backwards while shooting at him. Forcing him to endure until he pushes them to the boards edge before he can finally fight back.
@samhunter1205 Жыл бұрын
You could try just playing primary and mission objectives at first, and then adding in selected secondaries once you are all comfortable with that. IMO objectives are key to balance, but also add a good layer of strategy to the game.

Play smart. Learn your faction and their rules, then your units and what they do. My recent first win by myself was a 1000 point game. My Dark Angels vs Daemons of Khorne. I ran a Strikemaster, Champion, Apothecary, and Ancient along with Bladeguard (for character defense as they have Bodyguard abilities). Then 3 squads of Termies, but each squad was slightly different to build off of the strength. Two squads with TH/SS, but one squad had a cyclone and the other a Plasma Cannon/Powerfist. I was able to win thanks to my Apothecary healing and reviving models each turn (upgrade to Chief Apothecary and Selfless healer trait). But my goal was not to charge in and wipe my opponent out within a few turns, but rather holding just one of the objectives in the middle due to a secondary, and grind them down to take out more units each turn. But with my termies slow movement, i let the Daemons rush me so i could use my invulns to hold off their attacks, and using Ancient abilities, Warlord rerolls, and Apothecary healing my wall of Termies held up and by turn 5 my opponent had to keep his last 10-squad of Bloodletters alive to win, but i went first and slaughtered them without charging. Knowing that Daemons have a Daemon save that isnt affected by AP let me choose weapons that had little AP but more shots/attacks like having a squad of Storm bolters, Assault Cannon, Plasma Cannon (that i shouldve made a Heavy Flamer). Winning this game was a culmination of my knowledge from almost 20 or so games over the past year and it felt good to win and have learned even more afterwards.

I hate the Fight phase and melee order in 9th edition so much. Getting rid of Initiative is one of the worst mistakes GW ever made. If your unit gets charged, the charging unit(s) get to fight first, and then they get to go first AGAIN in your following turn...who thought this was good game design?

Increasing your win ratio is as simple as playing the cheesiest thing available. Increasing your enjoyment of the game is as simple as not playing against cheesers.
