Excellent mod. Don't know if you have Home depot or Lowes stores in your area but here goes. In these stores (and others) Weber brand sales a 24 pack of cubes that appear to be esbit tablets for fire starting an outdoor grill. Very cheap and works extremely similar to original esbit cubes. I think the model # is 7412 or something like that. Give this a try when using these type stoves. You might like. Peace from Texas

Thank You! As for the hardware stores I do not have access to them, as I live in Germany. For some reason I cannot visit their online-shops either to take a look. But Weber does sell white lighter cubes over here too, so I might try them out when I run out of my current batch of cubes. The regular white lighter-cubes over here in Europe are usually made from compounds like Paraffine and Petroleum whereas the Esbit cubes are made from Hexamine (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hexamethylenetetramine). I could not find any information regarding the Weber ones... do they have that nasty fishy smell like the Esbit cubes have? Greetings from Cologne, Germany

👍 .. I've done similar .. just used the pull-off top from a tin of herrings. Aluminium .. but more heavy duty so it does the job fine. Esbit Tabs .. stopped using them years ago. Here in Switzerland they are not available everywhere and are expensive .. unlike 'Brennsprit' or 'Sicherheitsbrennpaste'. Both can be sourced almost anywhere and are much cheaper. I keep a pack of Esbit Tabs stored in the folded stove for 'just in case'. Incidentally, the Esbit Stove was my Personal Issue in 1968 when I did my Military Sevice. It has cooked many meals and continues to do so .. even Full English Breakfasts. All one needs is a bit of lateral thinking and patience.

We have made inserts to cover both sides of the stove including in the open and in the half closed position. A spam can provided the metal. We have an assortment of aluminum bottle caps and small tins that may be refilled over & over when practicing with our young troops. All solid fuel tablets are very expensive here in the Philippines. For "practice runs," we purchase chaffing dish fuel in bulk, same gel alcohol as found in the canned product. This material is available restaurant, hotel and catering supply shops. A funnel aids in filling clean, dry dish detergent bottles with the fuel for dispensing as needed into the containers we place in the stoves. With a little practice, you can easily gauge what size container you need for heat/burn time The gel fuel poses little danger of spreading out in the event of a tip-over.
