Hi Blackjack, nice video. Got a couple of questions if you have any ideas. Picked up a Kawasaki klf400 quad and was not getting spark. The CDI unit has been replaced previously with a chinese unit to try and get it going. All of the colours matched up with a wiring diagram I found online - (bk/w + bl) pickup, (bk/w) ground, (y/r) 12v from engine cutout, (r/w) 12v from ignition switch?, (g/w) output to coil. Wasn't getting any results, power and grounds were testing where I expected them other than the R/W which was being pulled down to around 4v. I put 12v straight onto it and pretty sure I blew the unit, testing between the live to ignition switch and the r/w it seems there is a kiloohm resistor in there. Do you think it's possible that should have been a ground connection rather than the 12v I had on it? Second question, there is a third box beside the rectifier and CDI unit that shares a connection with the coil output from the CDI, it's labelled "control unit" on the diagram and has something to do with the carburettor heater. I take it this just turns the heater on if its seeing spark? Cheers

What if my igniter is not grounded? What are the symptoms? I have fzr 1000, I thought to replace cdi, it misfires, running really bad, not driveable. And do I need resistor assy on wire harness or this is all about other electronic installation like lights etc.? cause this engine is on the buggy, so I didnt put resistor back. Now Im in trouble and searching for a clue to get it running

Never wired an FZR100, so I'm guessing here, but if it runs, chances are it's not the Igniter Box, maybe a bad connection? If you have a diagram, my e-mail is on here, I can have a look at it, but no promises...

I do seem to wire up a fair number of Yamaha ignition systems. Mostly FJ 12s and XS650s. But then again they're pretty popular builds.

Have an 82 virago, was running then stopped all of a sudden, can’t get spark no matter what I try, Also have 2 dc cdis I thought would work as there is 4 pickup coil wires 2 for each coil, can’t get it working, any advice?
@BuiltatBlackjacks3 ай бұрын
If it was me, I'd get a multimeter and a manual and check for power at the igniter, then do a resistance check on the pick ups, then I'd check for continuity between the pick ups and the plug on the Virago igniter just to eliminate any wiring faults and the pick ups as those are just as likely to be faults. The problem with using something else is that unless you have a mechanical advance, then the ignition advance is going to be wrong, meaning somewhere between a lack of power and a hole in a piston. The Japanese have a habit of calling capacitor discharge ignition and computer digital ignition by the CDI acronym, they're very different down to the ignition coils, your "DC CDIs" sound like they might be capacitior discharge, pretty sure the Virago is Computer digital, so not going to work. However, it is possible to repair the Virago black box, seems they have a habit of offing the transistors that switch the coils. There are places that offer a repair service for them, or you could try somewhere that does computer repairs like this guy did.. www.google.com/search?q=Virago+igniter+repair&sca_esv=e9f3e6ede1937afe&sca_upv=1&source=hp&ei=ZrCwZu-lO9ahhbIPpZLs-QM&iflsig=AL9hbdgAAAAAZrC-d0q2qWOUNmCP8M9Le5LwUqNhVn4g&ved=0ahUKEwjv8Lz92N2HAxXWUEEAHSUJOz8Q4dUDCBk&uact=5&oq=Virago+igniter+repair&gs_lp=Egdnd3Mtd2l6IhVWaXJhZ28gaWduaXRlciByZXBhaXIyBRAhGKABMgUQIRigAUjaMlDNCVilMHABeACQAQCYAdIBoAGWDaoBBjIwLjAuMbgBA8gBAPgBAZgCFqACpg6oAgrCAhAQABgDGOUCGOoCGIwDGI8BwgIQEC4YAxjlAhjqAhiMAxiPAcICERAuGIAEGLEDGNEDGIMBGMcBwgIUEC4YgAQYsQMY0QMYgwEY1AIYxwHCAg4QLhiABBixAxiDARiKBcICDhAuGIAEGLEDGNEDGMcBwgIFEAAYgATCAgsQLhiABBjRAxjHAcICCxAAGIAEGLEDGIMBwgIIEAAYgAQYsQPCAggQLhiABBixA8ICCxAuGIAEGMcBGK8BwgIFEC4YgATCAg0QABiABBixAxhGGPkBwgIGEAAYFhgewgIIEAAYFhgeGA_CAgUQIRifBcICBxAhGKABGAqYAwqSBwYyMS4wLjGgB8ygAQ&sclient=gws-wiz#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:ace32682,vid:y8dt_w3FTpo,st:0

My 2-stroke Rotax has a single pickup, two coils and two cylinders, which aftermarket cdi can I use as a replacement?
@BuiltatBlackjacksАй бұрын
No idea. Mostly I build chops and bobber and not a lot of those use Rotax ring dingers. Have you tried Googling it?
@thisisyourcaptainspeaking2259Ай бұрын
@@BuiltatBlackjacks Yes, I came up with MSD 4255 but need to research it. Could be this Rotax pickup gets triggered twice/revolution, firing both coils simultaneously (like wasted spark).
@BuiltatBlackjacksАй бұрын
@thisisyourcaptainspeaking2259 you said it's a 2 stroke? All 2 strokes fire once per crank revolution so yes the pick up will trigger the CDI every time and the CDI will fire both coils. Assuming it's a single? Dual plugs in a single cylinder generally means faster flame front propagation so more fuel gets burnt, meaning cleaner emissions and more power.
@thisisyourcaptainspeaking2259Ай бұрын
@@BuiltatBlackjacks Definitely a two cylinder. A cylinder fires each 180 degrees of crank rotation. I'm just not sure if the CDI trigger is rung twice/rev. That would suggest a single coil could be used and that's not the case. Guess I need to put a timimg light on it...
@BuiltatBlackjacksАй бұрын
@thisisyourcaptainspeaking2259 yeah, sorry missed the two cylinder bit in your first. 🙄 What can I say, it gets busy round here. Just fitted a CDI to a CX 500 that appears to have been designed for 2 strokes and is programmable for advance curves etc. Basically turned up in a box and I fitted it. If you get stuck I could probably dig out the info on it.

Any chance a 2 stroke Yamaha blaster’s 5-wire cdi box is compatible with my 2-stroke Yamaha rt100 ? It has the same amount of wires
@cozyjedАй бұрын
And is significantly cheaper..
@BuiltatBlackjacksАй бұрын
No idea. What I'd do, apart from asking a few people who deal with a lot of RT100's is have a look at the factory parts diagrams (you can usually find those on line) and check the part no's out for the pickups, and alternator windings for both, see if there's any commonality.

My cdi has 8 pin outs for a 1985 Yamaha virago 1000. Anyone know where I can buy one or how to test it?
@BuiltatBlackjacksАй бұрын
Why does it need testing? If it's not working you're better off starting by testing the wiring, check for continuity from one end to the other, check nothing is shorting to ground that isn't supposed to. If you mean you need to know which pin does what, do a search for a "pin out" diagram for the unit. Bear in mind the plug is wired as the mirror image if you're looking at it head on, and that can make pin out diagrams confusing.

Do you even need a cdi if you use a m unite blue ?
@BuiltatBlackjacks2 ай бұрын
Yes you do. All an M unit Blue does is to control the stuff like lights and indicators. It'll control power to the ignition, basically switching the CDI on or off but that's it.
@phiksit3 ай бұрын
I see these CDI boxes online for fairly cheap. I'm wondering if they're basically universal and work across different brands and size engines... as long as the plug / pin configuration are the same as what I currently have?
@BuiltatBlackjacks3 ай бұрын
Unlikely. "CDI" gets used for capacitor discharge ignition and computer digital ignition and they're profoundly different, even the coils are different. Ignition timing needs to alter as the engine speeds up, sometimes this is done mechanically, sometimes it's done electronically in the "CDI" box. So there's more to it than just having a dandie CDI box.
