No matter where you are in you bonsai journey--whether you're working with starter material or you already have an established bonsai--I'm going to show you how to work on your bonsai during different stages of its life to get it to your ultimate artistic vision. For my demonstration, I will be using Catlin Elms. With each ramification, you can improve your bonsai's look and get closer to creating your bonsai heirloom.

Honestly, when you first started posting videos, you nearly lost me with info that I didn't think was pertaining to the state of my trees (I still consider myself a relative newbie), but your knowledge kept me coming back. So glad you listen to viewers suggestions to pertinent content of all bonsai viewers. I very much look forward to your videos each week.

I do have a question Milton, "Why wasn't I chosen for one of you trees on New Year's Eve?" It was even my birthday!@@bonsaiheirloom

I am 62 and I always feel that I don’t want to get into long term projects. But I’m into a verity of plants from bonsai to tropical houseplants, succulents and others. Just had a bonsai disaster yesterday. A shelf with 20 trees came off the wall onto my Elms and fruit trees. I thought I was going to cry. But 6 hours latter I was able to save all but two. Lots of repotting in one day. lol broken pots everywhere.

@@jonathanzellner906 I had a momentary heart attack but then I realized early repot. Took about two hours to clean up and straighten the area out then about 4 hours to get everything repotted and I’m happier with the new way it’s going.

Hi Milton! For your next Q/A, could you breakdown your watering schedule for dormant trees in the winter? More specifically for deciduous trees that are fully dormant and have lost all of its leaves. The winter season in the Bay Area isn’t as intense, and I’ve been seeing many mixed answers on how often you should be watering dormant trees. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

When I come with that much difficulties in making changes for my bonsai, usually I ask for the youngster to help, I mean, it will grow their sense of belonging towards the things that I have been working with for decades too

I work with a number of type of trees here in San Antonio Tx. I tent to prune my trees anytime from September through June. I avoid the summer. But my tropical trees I work on more in the spring and summer as long as their I’d good growth going on. Everything I do makes older masters cringe. lol. I’ve never follow the rules. Though there are rules of biology of the trees you have to follow. It seems smaller trees are popular because not everyone has a place you could do large work or it’s the price that plays into it. Agin enjoying your channel.

I agree...clipping won't harm the tree...just trading growth rate to rthe rate of raminfication.

Mr. Chang, I believe you mentioned a "root pruning screen", if so, can you give me a bit more info on this. I am just beginning and have chosen a Japanese Barberry for my first run at this. Ultimately I would love to do a Japanese Maple and a Sugar Maple. I am a fan of the tortured look. Thank you so much for your teaching.

Wouldn't it be easier to tie the wire around the pot? You could then pull multiple branches towards that wire. I prefer that to drilling into the tree.
@MiltonChang-ee6rq
@MiltonChang-ee6rq 5 ай бұрын
yes you can, and I do sometimes when it takes a lot of force. ! I try to make the wire less prominent. Whatever that is easy for you to get the job done easy...make bonsai easy and fun...and relaxing! thanks for the feedback!
