Barbara, I've been knitting for over 50 years and have never read, seen or heard anyone do as good a job as this of explaining yarn overs in such clear, concise detail. Brava! (and many thanks!) BTW your camera position, focus, and lighting are THE BEST.

Thank you SO MUCH for this!! I was looking around for just the right video explaining not only the motion of the yarn but how to WORK the yo in an actual knitted piece. I am a beginner and the pattern I'm trying to follow is a lace-style blanket square and this was a technique i didn't know, but your video helped immensely!! Also, I really appreciate that you show both styles! I'm an english knitter so it really helps understand the concept. Thank you again!!

Wow! Excellent! I have only a tiny speck of useful vision, but I was able to follow that entire demonstration. You did a marvelous job of having strong contrasts in the video; the needles, the yarn, your hands and the background are all clearly visible throughout the demonstration. Your lighting is excellent, and the large picture is great. This is, bar none, the clearest demonstration I have seen. If you ever make a DVD, I'll buy it. I'd love to just listen to you talk about all the stuff you know about knitting, about color and about design. Thanks so much for your excellent video and your excellent narration.

Hello Barbara, I was wondering if there's a way to do a Yarn Over before a Norwegian Purl? If so, could you do a video so I could see how it's done? Also, thanks for teaching me how to do that stich, the Norwegian Purl really helped my knitting life. My background is crochet, so the Norwegian Purl feels more natural to me, and your video is the best I've seen. Thanks again, Kathryn
@WatchBarbaraKnit
@WatchBarbaraKnit Жыл бұрын
I haven't made a video on that but I will see what I can do. Essentially you have to do a double yarn over before the purl and one of them disappears.

Thanks for this tutorial. How do I knit the next row after a row with yarn overs so I don't increase stiches? Thanks.
@WatchBarbaraKnit
@WatchBarbaraKnit 4 жыл бұрын
You work the yarn over in the next row exactly like you would work any other stitch. IF you pattern says purl, purl it and if it says knit, knit it. I'm uncertain how simply working the yarn over would increase the number of stitches. The main thing is that you need to have an equal number of decreases to match your number of increases - but that typically all occurs in the same row.

I’ve been knitting for 2.5 years and just realized I’ve been twisting YOs the whole time. Can you show what the next row would look like. So for instance if your pattern says purl the row, what would that look like when you get to a YO?
@WatchBarbaraKnit

You purl it in the exact same way you would purl any other stitch. This video on understanding Stitch Mount might help you: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mnOtqXlmatZ7aNE

It can be worked with either a knit or a purl - it depends entirely on what the pattern tells you to do.

I love ALL of your videos! Since this one was about yarn overs, maybe you can do one using yarn overs to make button holes? I have done them before, but they always turn out kinda wonky looking.
@WatchBarbaraKnit
@WatchBarbaraKnit 6 жыл бұрын
Since I don't really do garments my experience with buttonholes is quite limited. But I have done YO buttonholes and it is just in their nature to be wonky. They are kind of a cheating way to do a buttonhole and if you want more stability you really need to just break down and do a legit buttonhole. ;) LOL

I have the hardest time keeping track of where I am in lace knitting. I am great at it in crocheting, but I get lost with it in knitting. How do you keep on sequence and match up to the next row? I would love to see you do a video about this so that maybe I can get past this problem and knit what I really want to. Thank you for your YO demonstration. It was very helpful.

Maybe it would help to have stitch markers between every repetition of the lace pattern to keep track of where you are. I know that helps me if it’s many repetitions in one row. It’s easier to remember one repetition if you have markers to show you where to begin a new one. That also help you see if you miss/have to many stitches.

That's not something I've ever made. But mostly it is just a regular brim up hat and you stop it when the opening is the size you want. Just do the decreases until it is the size you want and then bind off instead of continuing the decreases.
