I'm super excited to be able to share this with you! Paul was kind enough to show us one of his actual estimates from last year.
He shares with us his process from the time he steps inside a potential customer's house to the time he finishes the job.

I'd like to say thank you again, and to thank Paul, for this episode in particular. I had the day off and sat down to make my own spreadsheet. Once I broke out every single bit of my material and labor costs I've pretty well identified where I wasn't making money. Which was everywhere lol. First bid with the new system tomorrow evening.

@@CabotAndRowe Hi Paul! Thank you for checking in. All in all very much to the positive. I've raised prices some and picked up a few of your sales techniques. Closing more work with higher prices. And I've taken the last two weekends off! I would go months without a day off last year. Slowly bust surely I'll carve out a spot for myself in the local market.

I have been laying tile 30 years I love tile it gave me so much freedom when I was raising my daughter I am 53 years old now and do mostly new construction but I am frustrated with the direction things have gone with the trade larger tiles that cant be layed without clips the new grouts less time to get the job done ect.i know I am a good installer with lots of experience so I came here to hopefully ignite that flame maybe I should go to remod market where I can control the time and quality some builders just want it done I am never satisfied but everyone says that is so nice you are a artist

I hear ya brother. Builders, GCs, even "designers" are frustrating to work with. Goin in after other trades. Forced to work with subpar materials. Waiting to get paid. Sucks! You have more control when you work with Susie Homeowner direct. Get a website. Make it into your portfolio of past work. Setup some Google Ads and drum up your own leads. Much more remodeling work. And you can build it how They want it.

Correction #2 - the framing was dropping the shower floor plywood to between the trusses to allow for a curbless shower.

A lot of contractor websites are missing Progress pics. The template is usually what they do and before and after pics. If you show how you work along the way it gives a great visual aid of how you do things. And customer half sold before they call you.

One thing we didn't mention with the on-the-spot estimates is that it answers the second biggest question for the customers, which is "How long will this take?" We can give them the number of days right there. Which leads into our sales pitch of working one job at a time, 5 days a week until finished. We're not going to drag out a simple bath remodel for months.

Awesome interview. I like the idea of bringing visuals like the glass tile The amount of awful glass installs I see out there is mind boggling and I often wonder if ppl know the difference. Bring an example is one way of informing your client, therefore adding value and at least the competition will be held to a high standard. Hey, they can do it for cheap but high end will be expected! thanks and keep up the great work.

The first step in business is defining who your customer is. Once you have that model then you go seek them out. And the more years you have in the trade doing quality work, the more others seek you out. But yeah it starts with knowing who your customer is. There's people that buy from Home Depot. There's people that buy from the uppity polo shirt-salesnan company. And there's people that buy from Paul.

Also, work the estimate like you're already on the job. Instruct them on why you use certain materials and what's all involved to install them. Get into all the details. What's this corner gonna look like? How do you want this edge? Where's the referance point. All sets you apart from others who just give a price. Work the estimate so detailed that every question is answered. And you'll show them experience and knowledge. So the close isn't a barter over cost. You'll be showing as you go what you're worth. And your value will justify your price.

Three grand to tile 134sqft floor? I’m in the wrongggg area man. That would pay 536$ where I’m at. Plus I’d have to supply quickset mortar to get it done in 1 day(if possible). No wonder I’m burned out and falling out of love with my craft. Lots of useful stuff here guys, keep it up 🍻

Great information. One thing mentioned at the very end was asking for retainers before starting the work. So my understanding is that Paul does not ask for retainers prior to starting but does require what is know as "progress payments" ( example : A payment once shower is torn out on a shower rebuild project and then final payment when tile shower would be completed?)
@lukemiller8204
@lukemiller8204 3 жыл бұрын
Correct, Paul does not ask for retainers. I am not certain about progress payments. I advise getting both a Deposit, and progress payments for any job longer than a week long. Everyone is different though and in different environments with different business models and goals.

Just found your channel thanks to Sal diblassi , im tiling almost 20 years and its the money that has always depressed me , I have nt been paid well enough for the Care and attention I ve put in to my work I feel , I have no solution , even recently I priced a job at what I felt was right but I knew wouldn't get the job , and I was right , the cheap guy wins most of the time , I saw a job recently and was shocked how poorly finished it was yet he got away with it , still I refuse to do substandard work to do a job faster

Hi Peter, I am glad you are benefiting from the content! The best way to price your work is based on how much it is costing your company. Keep good records of time and materials and charge double what it costs you. Does that make sense?
