This video How to work with a fearful dog from a dog shelter is about possibly the most important part of getting your dog from a shelter. Dogs in shelters can have unknown backgrounds circumstances and behavior issues. When you take a fearful dog home from the shelter knowing how to make the transition easy on the dog will absolutely reduce your stress and behavior issues from the dog. In this episode, Thomas goes over the approach that you should take when bringing a fearful dog home from the dog shelter.

Thank you SO MUCH for these videos!! We are picking up a rescue dog that is coming from Georgia later this week, and the rescue people say that she is absolutely terrified at the shelter. We have no clue what level of training she has or what she has been through, but are willing to give her a nice quiet home and time to let her figure it all out. My husband and I have trained dogs in the past but have only dealt with nervous rescue cats, not dogs. We have learned our cat's triggers and tolerances but a dog is a whole different ball game. Every bit of advice and insight is welcome and much appreciated!!

Training these kind of dogs is challenging but so rewarding and can change their lives forever. Thank you for bringing us these videos and for all you do, you do it well. I foster for a rescue group in Syracuse area, and it's true when they are in homes they can decompress.

THANK YOU for giving her a voice, explaining for her, and “where” interested adopters can begin at a pace she can handle. She isn’t “broken”, just needs nurturing, patience, love, kindness, consistency, and someone that “listens to/hears” her. Gratitude teacher Tom❤️🙏🏾

It’s great that the Nebraska shelter reached out to obtain your help and direction. Hopefully this could set a trend for shelters to reach out and understand the animals they have more so it would help them being placed easier. Hats off to you Tom.

I just acquired a young doodle that has likely been on the run for a while. She is so fearful of everything. She however sits, lays, leash, kennels so that tells me she has been loved. Her tail is also cropped. These videos are a really great start to figure her out. I have a 5 year old labradoodle too that is very kind. They are doing well together but she is so timid and afraid. She retreats into her kennel all the time. Thank you so much for this help. I am more confident in helping Bella.

Very helpful, i work with rescueddogs at one shelter, i get angry on people who dont want to give a chance to a dog like the one from your video, calling the dog too difficult to handle, aggressive, not possible to rehabilitate etc

I would LOVE a video on how to work on obedience training with a dog like this. I have a rescue GSD that was very much like this girl. Been with me for 2 years now & have gotten as far as heeling on leash, coming when called, going into her kennel, and allowing me brush/bath her. However, she still isn't comfortable being touched & I haven't been able to do anything with her as far as sit & lay down go. Would love to teach her those as well as stay & get her to actually enjoy being pet.

Awesome video! Always said that the "hardest dog" to handle is a dog like I got, not about the breed but because of the fact that she's a very dominent female, she's a high energy dog. But that's "easy" if you know what you do, the thing is that I got her when she was 7 months old, did not know much about her. The hard part was of the fact that she had those traits (dominent, high energy) PLUS of the fact that she had bad owners that NEVER trained her or stimulated her with activites (High energy dog needs training to not go crazy) and ofcourse not socialized at all (a dominent dog with no socializing skills.. Fun). And to top it all she had a broken tail and like a thousand bad habits because she was so stressed, she couldn't think properly. It required so much for me to be able to figure out what her "problem" was, what she needed, what I had to prioritize etc etc. Videos like this is SO important, you're doing a great job. Because if I wouldn't had help, it would of been hard. Ofcourse I had to be motivated myself so I could go and search for answers and/or tips & tricks etc. But looking back it's amazing to see the dog that she finally became. Just felt to share my little story and thank you for the video lol
