Wouldn't it be cool if Dog Shelters had a trainer on staff to really set these dogs up for their best chance of adoption . Seems to me it would be a great place for apprentices to really learn and help the dogs, and in the end financially reduce the cost involved to hold dogs in the the shelter for extended periods

Luckily, many shelters do. But not all trainers can help all dogs. Also, other rescues can't afford trainers, and yet other rescues that are foster based.

This is hands down the best video for me, personally. I recently adopted a GSD/Collie Mix who was in and out of shelters 3 times and is 3 1/2 years old. You can imagine the challenge of structuring this dog. I have been watching many of your videos and started applying some of your techniques. This collie fits my dogs behavior so closely when it comes to energy. I cannot thank you enough for uploading this video. I will be using it instrumentally in training and structuring my dog.

Hi. I'm trying to watch all of your videos. This early video was so wonderful to watch you and this dog and the bond you developed with her using your techniques. I am still in training so I can work with dogs in shelters and my community that are not aggressive. Sometimes we forget about the non-aggressive dogs that are easy to help. It is not the dog's fault but the human who don't have any experience, nor know anything about what a dog is, etc. I had a dog when I was young and a family dog when my children was 6 & 7 yrs old. Now I want to help people so they can be better pet owners. Thank you. Stay safe.

Aahhhhhh! Like like like like!! 😭😭😭 I have worked wit her quite a bit and she would be engaged if I had her favorite toy (ball, frisbee), and sometimes came to me for pets and sometimes not😞 I would try to enter her kennel for pets and her nervousness would go through roof like she was saying “I am going to jump and bounce out of excitement or......I’m just going to go outside now”. It’s like you have a paws in time with them and totally reeled in together and she grounded from you. She is amaaaaaaazzzzing and brilliant and loving and sweet and will make THE BEST companion. At the shelter I have a difficult time finding that pause space and focus, or overwhelmed with “everyone needs time to run and play, go go go!”, practice practice practice bc I see now that it benefits them tremendously and is possibly the most important thing I can do for shelter dogs too. TY again sooooo much!!!Keep the videos coming I missed most of the day bc I was running around. 🖐🏽🙌🏽🐾🐾❤️❤️

Back in 2014 I volunteered at a dog shelter and there was this beautiful black boy that was really reactive in his kennel with strangers, which is why nobody was interested in adopting him. I fell in love with him and hoped he would find a home but in 2019 he was STILL there. I wanted to adopt him myself but already had a dog and my landlord wouldn't let me have another. Finally in March I moved in with my SO and decided it was the right moment but then the pandemic began and it wasn't possible. So this whole time I've been watching your videos and those of Robert Cabral since I knew this dog might be a challenge, I even ordered a herm sprenger. Fast forward to two days ago and my beautiful Ollie is finally here! He gets startled easily and still reacts to strangers but is otherwise the sweetest, most playful intelligent and affectionate dog. I put a prong on him the first day and that was where our relationship truly began. He instantly responded with minimal pressure and trusted my judgment. But most importantly he is learning that he doesn't have to be afraid anymore because I'm here to guide him through the rest of his life. Thank you

I was like you as a kid. My mom will tell you stories of me walking up to growling dogs and having them stop and come up to me licking my hand. (No I didn't hold them out) We had a chow who boarded at a vet I worked for that would attack the cage when you walked past and couldn't be handled except with a dog catching pole. I sat outside his cage, not looking at him, tossing in food occasionally. Once he settled I'd move closer. By the end of the week I could use a slip leash like any other dog. Her owners were soooo happy. They were literally in tears. I have the same gift with feral cats.

Love the videos! I have a question I am hoping you can help me with. I am a foster and I've had trouble working with some dogs so I'm just going to give an example. One of the dogs I fostered was a Burmese mountain dog who was 40lbs under weight and she had a chain collar that had grown through her neck that we had to surgically remove. I also believe that her owner before we removed her severely beat her every time she went near food (I had come to the conclusion because every time we presented any kind of food she would get extremely fearful and tuck herself into a corner and look away from the food). After months of no training to let her wounds heal and get her weight back up the vet said anything on her neck could cause further damage so we asked about an e-collar and he said that should be fine but if someone saying hi to her pulls her out of the way by the collar it could still do some minimal damage. A harness worked for a short while but once she started getting weight back she could just pull over any potential owners and it made it extremely difficult to train. We tried toys but she had never seen toys, she was still to uneasy or later to uninterested to take food from anyone, we couldn't put anything on her except a harness and sometimes an e-collar if only people that were aware of her neck were around. She was the sweetest most loving dog in the world butt I felt helpless trying to train her and it was so difficult to place her because most owners interested in her couldn't handle her pulling and added difficulty training. Sorry long message... But in this situation what could I have done to better serve the well-being of this dog? How do you train a dog that you can't even put a leash on and has no interest in anything you try to offer? It's unfair to the dog to have such a lack of training but it's unfair to ask a potential owner to muddle through being pulled over by a large completely untrained dog while we try to figure out what to do with her. As fosters we only get a quick run through on basic dog training and how to identify behavior... What can I do for animals like this to make them adoptable so they can have a balanced life?

Can you point me to any videos of yours that talk about reading body language, particularly tails? We’ve had my rescue for 3 years. She seems relaxed and happy overall except sometimes when she’s laying in her bed and o walk in, she will look up at me submissively and the tip her tail will shake/flicker rapidly. It almost looks like she’s nervous but I would have no idea why.

You know what, I am the same as you but with cats!... I can read and understand them just like you do with dogs... Felines wild and domesticated have been my love and passion ever since I was a little girl... It is so easy for me to read cats!... I am a part time cat behaviorist because contrary to dogs, cats behaviorist is a very new field and people don't spend as much time to fix their cats' issues contrary to dogs... They will simply abandon, some times in the middle of nowhere, or kill their cats rather than to fix the behavior issues...
