Rhythm slashes are a standard way of showing improvisation in a score, giving the musician complete freedom or notating rhythm but freedom with voicing chords or progressions. This video shows how to use rhythm slashes in Dorico, allowing the use of slash regions in music notation to be extremely flexible.

Thank you! Is there a way to group a series of measures with slash notation, so that it will appear as a measure (perhaps an elongated measure) with slashes, and a number over it, to indicate the number of measures? For example, a bar with slashes and a 16 over it, to indicate to a drummer to play freely for a 16 bar verse. (But not using "repeats.")

I think you mean like a multibar rest but for repeats? We don't have that at the moment by default, no sorry.

If have already input a full staff of regular notes, and want to go back to change one of the measures to rhythmic notation, but keep the rest of the staff regular notes, how would I do that. If I right click on that particular measure, and change the voice to slash notation the entire line changes.
@dorico
@dorico 5 жыл бұрын
You need to use the 'change voice' option in the right-click > Voices > Change Voice > New upstem slash etc - then the next time you can just use 'upstem slash' (not 'new') as a slash voice will be available then.

I found this video on Steinberg's Dorico for iPad tutorial. However, it does not answer the question how can I input just rhythm for the guitar within the Dorico iPad version.

If you have a qwerty keyboard attached you can use the same shortcuts, but otherwise when you have the caret active long-press on the 'voices' button on the left-hand side (the button below the G clamp) and select a slash voice.

Thank you for the content. I have a question, how can mix a Rhythmic notation with a Tie to a Slashed following bar? when I have it in slash mode the tie disappears.
@dorico
@dorico 2 жыл бұрын
You can either use an LV tie (from the properties panel), or add a slash note (without a stem) if necessary.

I have a guitar part that has notation in two voices in the beginning. Later in the piece I switched to rhythmic notation. At that point the beginning of the piece which uses normal notation suddenly shifts to rhythmic notation in one of the voices. What can I do?
@dorico
@dorico Ай бұрын
You need to create a new slash voice rather than converting one of the existing voices into a slash voice

At 5:50, even though the notes converted to Rhythmic Slashes are retained, they don't play. At least that's the case on Dorico SE 4. Strangely the MIDI notes still show on the piano roll and nothing shows as muted. Is this a bug? I actually have a full Dorico license on another machine, but I'm running SE to create a KZbin video that could help guitar players in particular get into Dorico. The workaround is to create another player to show the rhythmic notation. But then, when you display only the part and not the full score, there is still no playback sound. Is there a switch to enable this, has it been disabled in SE, or is it something that wasn't thought necessary? In my view it doesn't make sense for it not to play.
@dorico
@dorico 2 жыл бұрын
It is intentional that the slashes don't play. If you use a slash region instead (just showing e.g. 4 beats in a bar but no rhythms) then the music still plays underneath.

@@dorico I need a rhythm staff to use for tutorials that students can play along to. In Guitar Pro I turn on Slash notation that is linked to the underlying chords and it plays. I think there ought to be a switch to allow the track to be played.What is the logic behind this limitation?

Can you write a fake chart with a melody in the staff and slash notation above the staff indicating a different rhythm from the melody?
@dorico
@dorico 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can add both a melody line and a slash voice above (or below) it in the same staff. You can also write a melody line and then hide it with slashes and chords, but the melody can still play back for e.g. solo sections.

I'm 6 days into the Dorico demo and just tried to do this tonight. Donald, if you haven't seen how this works in Dorico, try the demo. If you know anything about the kluge you have to go through to get this to work in Finale, you'll be amazed. Not sure how it works in Sibelius but anything is better than Finale. For those of us who write lead sheets, Dorico is going to be a game-changer. It's just way way better overall. There's definitely a learning curve but I'm going to stick with it. I have no affiliation whatsoever with Steinberg.

You aren’t wrong to be concerned, but I look at this kind of software as tool that is as significant as an instrument. In fact, I write more music with the software than I do with an instrument in my hand. Six hundred bucks is no small thing, but would anyone consider a $600 guitar to be too expensive?
