Gonna try this next time I do my bars but how did you determine how much to cut from the end? Or did it just happen to be the perfect length?
@karlp44432 жыл бұрын
Clean yes, but prone to rolling the edges, and also collecting dirt and water. That’s why for the last 50+ years it has been done from the bottom to the top. There’s a reason for that.

@@karlp4443 Team Ineos mechanics apparently are wrapping the bars from bottom to top in the traditional way but they’re then securing the bar tape with glue instead of electrical tape. Best of both worlds. I’m gonna give it a try next time I wrap my bars. If I fail I can still use the good old electrical tape.
@Pietje900 Жыл бұрын
This is ofcourse the logical technique if you don't want to use electrical tape. However, ofcourse there's a very good reason why the bar tape is professionally wrapped from the end inwards. This is because your hand would typically run over the bar in an outwards direction. With this technique that would mean your hands would run "against the grain" so to speak and this can wear out the edges of your bartape quickly. This is why we use finishing tape. Otherwise everyone would just do it like this guy in the video. Another pro tip is to change the direction on the lower part of bar wrapping from the inside to the outside (when starting from the end of the bar ofcourse). Because when you grip it your hands tend to rotate in the opposite direction when gripping the lower part of the bar. This way the rotation will tighten the tape instead of loosening it up. In the end this doesn't matter much for performance but this technique would make your bartape significantly more durable meaning you'd have to change them less frequently. So pick your poison: frequently having to change your bartapes or a piece of finishing tape...
@buster.keaton Жыл бұрын
^^ This. Years of experience has shown me that wrapping bars "top down" as shown in the video instead of the traditional "bottom up" results in the bar tape wearing much faster. My current bars were wrapped "bottom up", with ugly electrical tape, and the Shimano padded tape is still going strong after three years of use.

@devdroid96064 ай бұрын
I do both. Like shown here from the top, then stop under the hood, cut to triangular edge and hold down with 2 - faced carpet tape. Then start from the bottom in traditional way, using plug, in opposite direction. Cut in triangle end to match up perfectly with top section to carpet tape and then finishing tape on top. Advantage is that the finishing tape covers the joint and never sees much wear, while the tape is in the right direction in both sections, being locked in by the plug at bottom.
@DaveCM2 жыл бұрын
The first time I saw someone wrap it reversed was a few years ago. I started doing it shortly after when I was in a gravel race and it rained for most of it. The finishing tape came loose as a result on one side and wouldn't stick anymore. I had to unwrap the bar tape some and tie it off to keep it from unwrapping anymore. The only drawback to the reverse wrap is I push against the edge of the tape when reversed wrapped.
@brandonhoffman47124 ай бұрын
Thats why its really a gimmick. As far as im aware, only novice riders and ones that dont ride often wrap from the top down. Word on the street is all race teams wrap from the bottom up, with 50% wrapping one direction and 50% wrapping the other. Some wrap for the hands twisting in the drops, some wrap for the hands twisting on the flats. Ive heard it stated that its when holding the flats of the bars when athletes are really using a twisting motion on the bars, which makes sense to me. The same person said when you're in the drops its more of a linear motion, which also makes sense to me.

I always use tape with the adhesive on the back. I used to do this at Raleigh and have easily done over 30,000 bars this way so I have a little bit of an advantage 😀. I know it was over 30 years ago but the skill never leaves you once you've learnt it. 125 bars a day, 5 days a week and 48 weeks a year. I was doing it for just over a year.

Multiple times during a ride I will glance down and just marvel at the beautiful aesthetics of the no-tape wrap. The one thing I am still a bit sceptical about is how long it will last. This is the way that I wrapped bars in the 1970s. I mostly used adhesive backed cloth tape (I believe it was Tressostar) back then. Looked good at first but the tape would gradually fray and creep then down the bar eventually leaving gaps. Plastic tape (Benotto was popular in the 1980s) wrapped this way would also creep leaving gaps much faster. That's why nowadays the pros wrap from the bar ends up. If you don't mind retaping your bars more frequently then top down as in the video works.

I just started to do my own bars as I noticed the wrap starting to lose it’s tightness. Granted the amount I was riding I should’ve changed the wrap once or twice a year. My hands tend to roll outward on the drop and backwards on the tops. Many examples have the tape rotation in the other direction. Has anyone come across this? Many years of riding a Fixie and single speeds have changed my geared bike riding bar position. I am going to try this only have the tape roll out on the drops.

Looks good but not after 2-3 rides. Those ridges will start to stretch and flip under hand friction and wear

This goes directly to my Favourites folder for further perusal, examination and application in practice :):) A question tho-what do I do if the bar tape I use is quite a bit thicker than this one? I like silicon padded tapes and making a figure of 8 creates a bulbous monstrosity.
@core2zero2 жыл бұрын
i did figure 8 with a bontrager double gel cork, thing is massive, and it was okay, and it came with 2 pieces of slimmer tape to add behind the bars (instead of figure 8), so i guess your best bet is to not f8, and use a slimmer tape strip for the peasant wrapping if you can't get it comfortable enough

Just pull it tight, that is all. I never met a tape that was too thick and I have done it all

Everything old is new again. This was the way to wrap bars until all of a sudden there was a new better way.😂

Handlebar tape, wrapped like this, will unwind and curl up when the hands slide left and right from the stem or down on the drops?
@DaveCM2 жыл бұрын
I've been doing it this way for years now. Never had a problem. The only issue is that I push against the edge of the tap when on the hoods as the exposed edge faces me. Not really an issue so much as I tend to replace my tape fairly often anyway

Is that the oil slick bar tape?

Nope just black tape

I tried the reverse wrap once, but when I rode aggressively, my hands would splay out and go against the seam of the tape and ended up making the ends curl up. I have that Supacaz on my all-road rig. At first, I hated it. The shop put it on without letting me know instead of the Fizik I normally use. It felt too sticky (in a bad way). Now that it's worn in a bit, it feels absolutely great.
@GCPerformance182 жыл бұрын
very nice, I have not had anyone with issues with the jobs that I do, but also this is also a subjective thing because someone could get a bad wrap job or do one themselves and have a shitty time and it tarnish there whole feelings about this

@@GCPerformance18 I'm an unorthodox brute when I ride so it might just be me that it didn't work out for. I still treat all my bikes like they're '80's PK Rippers like I used to ride. LOL
