Two point cut technique at the end is genius. Nothing more frustrating than doing a good wrap to that point and then messing up the finishing cut. For a job that most home mechanics do once a year it's a great tip to get the perfect finish. Personally I prefer the tape to end on the bottom of the bars but that's tricky to do without a strong workstand. Wrapping only the tape and not the bars with the finishing strip is also a good tip, as long as the core of the tape matches the outside.

Great vid! Some nice tips esp on plugging the bar early and the final cut. On top of the bar IMO it's preferable to be wrapping toward the rider...so if you're doing a fig8 you can just start in the opposite direction

Whenever I tackle a job on the bike, I look at a few youtube clips to get the various methods. This clip was the fifth I watched and when I got to the end I realised that it captured all the important points and I suggest that if you only have time for one clip, then this is easily the best. And, by way of coincidence, I'm fitting a supacaz tape!

Been wrapping bar tapes for more than 30 years..... Usually I only get the cheap cork ones.... But have to admit supacaz are the best I have ever had.... Last longer, Comfy and super grippy. Little extra tip.... When applying it to aero bars, I finish bar tape an inch in from the ends on the flat bar section (leaving most of the bar exposed). I like the supacaz finishing tape that I use it to apply it flat on the top section on the aero bar. You guys need to give more of that finishing tape.... That's gold!
@daurieschwartz41894 жыл бұрын
I’ve been racing and riding road for almost 30 years and I’ve always wrapped the top of the bars front to back across the top so that when you’re holding the tops of the bars the natural twisting direction of your hands “tightens” the tape. Same in the drops. I’m always twisting my hand inward so I wrap outside to inside. You’ll get many opinions on the drops but I’ve never seen any pro wrap back to front on the bar tops. Going to try out your tape as I’ve heard good things.
@marcogiampa2834 жыл бұрын
You can pretty much figure out a way to do the hood section to get any combo you like, tops should pretty much always be front to back but if you want to wrap the drops inward or outward is up to you on whether you think you roll out or in more
@AlvaroQF4 жыл бұрын
They to it that way because otherwise the colores stars are hidden. You are correct, they are not. The 8 figure is not a pro-tip, it’s ugly and incorrect.

Some good tips for sure! Like the marking of the bar tape for the cut, plus putting the piece of finish tape only on the bar tape and not overlapping onto the bar - - looks more "finished." But, have to say I'm not a fan of the figure 8 around the shifters.

Changed both sides while referring to this video, after the first side the other is way easier. But overall it's not that hard! You can make a lot of mistakes and re-wrap a lot of times, it sticks just fine. One thing not stressed enough in the video is how hard you actually have to pull the tape so there are no gaps at the back way easier. The hardest part was the start for me when i wrapped my first side.
@JustMe-nn2dk4 жыл бұрын
I would have done the opposite; inwards towards rider at bottom and top. Logic being the wrist load is on the inside, so tends to pull tape tighter when in use.

2 questions: 1) why wrap the top of the bar in a right hand orientation (the direction the fingers will curl when holding the bar), wouldn't this make the tape tend towards unraveling on the tops? 2) why only apply the finishing tape to the bar tape, and not the handlebars as well?
@marcing76842 жыл бұрын
That is a grat video. Managed to wrap my handlebars first time. I'm very satisfied with the result and there is absolutely no need for any adjustments. Brillant. Thank You Supacaz

Many pros don't figure 8, that's how you can end up with a lump behind your STI lever. Pros cut a strip to cover the metal band and then roll the tape in a continual clockwise direction. The key is to get the wrap just underneath the lever, so the tape just touches the lever body, then continuing around the lever once, and then on to the top of the handlebar. No looping back around with figure eights. If done correctly, it looks 100% cleaner and distortion free. No bulge on the backside of the shift lever.
@krunchie20243 жыл бұрын
Just to all of the comments about "winding in the wrong direction", Supacaz has coloured stars on only one side (left or right) of the tape. Wouldn't the need to leave the same side of the tape exposed before and after the figure 8 necessitate a change of winding direction? This wouldn't be an issue with a regular tape that has left/right symmetry.

@aidy38779 ай бұрын
This one seems to get more things wrong than right. Direction of tape on the drops is debatable - but across the tops should always be towards the rider. Electrical tape to secure cables is okay if you're in a rush that's all you've got, but it's much better to use a non-stretchy tape to keep the cables tight to the bars and to stop them moving around underneath the bar tape. You should try to finish the wrap underneath the bars, not on top. It's much neater, and it's less likely to get caught on things and start to unravel that way.

How do you stretch the bling type? The material is so different and I could hardly stretch it alas the installation is no where near this. I’m sure supacaz has tested this material before selling it.

Becareful of the new Supacaz reflective series. Those ones dont stretch. They are more of a foam material. I tried installing them like my other supacaz tape (i have at least installed over 8 of them in the last couple years on my bikes) and the new reflective ones ripped. So just be careful and dont need to fully stretch if you bought that kind.

Derek Newton If you are referring to the Supacaz Galaxy tape as seen in the video, then you’ll need to unravel the entire roll and start from the “opposite side” of the roll when wrapping the other side of your handlebars. @@rickdoehler502 , here is a trick I use with electrical tape which I find goes to mush in the heat of the sun. Wrap the electrical tape very tightly; add enough extra wrap to finish on the bottom side of the handlebar, add an additional 5cm or 2 inches, cut; here is the HINT - glue the inside of the electrical tape for 2cm/ 1 inch with "Super Glue"; stretch tape around bottom, squeeze out excess glue (use paper towel or facial tissue between hands & glue); cut electricl tape to end on underside, press with paper for short period of time. This trick can make tape last for years.

@jen38004 жыл бұрын
is there a reason you do not need to reverse direction on the tops? i always reverse wrap to compensate for the fact that my wrists and hand turn inward on the tops under torque when climbing, and the opposite in the drops. this avoids the tape unwrapping under stress over time. why is your tape different and does not require this preventative approach? if i do it your way, i will have to replace the tape sooner.
@rickdoehler5024 жыл бұрын

@worlwr23 жыл бұрын
Yeah you're right. Most people twist away on the drops so the inner to outer wrapping on that section was fine but should've reversed to retain an inner to outer rotation on the hoods and front to back on the tops to account for the direction of grip load and stress.
