Yes. If you are writing objectives just put on your "emerging skill" hat... if you want 80% accuracy in 1 year, then at the first tri-mester, maybe write the obj for 30%... second tri write it for 60%... and so on. Back into it... does that make sense? Thanks for your question!

oh my ! this was soo helpful! I have been struggling with understanding how to correctly write a S.M.A.R.T IEP Goal. The one thing that I am still a bit confused about is the mastery section. How do you know what percentage of accuracy to put? do you just estimate a number? How did you get 80%??

As a general rule, 80% is average for mastery in most things. Of course, not all things are measured in percentages. (ie. writing goal uses a rubric). The most important thing is knowing where your student is and where you think he/she can go. In some of those cases it is an estimate but more important than "mastery" is the ability to track the growth. It's not a big issue to me if a student doesn't meet the mastery level, but did he/she make progress?
