My daughter is running us through a silly DBZ campaign. It's a little ridiculous, but she's 5, so it's okay! Started out by having a picnic and "Everything was fine... That is until RADITZ shows up!" (she loves MasakoX) After we beat Raditz, we find out that there are more Saiyans coming. "He says they'll be here in five minutes, but you know that nobody in the Frieza force knows how minutes work."

When you mentioned environmental damage, I was thinking of the terrain and such having hit points and still rolling for damage even if you miss. I roll to attack, 11 You miss the devil and deal 18 damage to the ground. That space is now difficult terrain.

Speaking of "main character syndrome" I remember during my group's second campaign, which was set in the same world as our first but 20 years later, we had to come up with reasons not to include our epic level PCs from the first campaign. We literally had to send my original character off into space on a Spelljammer with a fleet of space pirates to hold back a Mindflayer armada that had been sending scouts to our planet.

I think a good way to run a DBZ campaign is by having it start off with the PCs being mercenaries wandering from planet to planet fulfilling jobs with the option to eventually join the Galactic Patrol or Frieza Force. That way the players will have incentive to get up and go look for trouble instead of sit around and wait for trouble to find them. Like how we see Jaco hunting down criminals in super or the Galactic Patrol's involvement with keeping huge threats locked up like Moro. Likewise, having them be tasked with wiping out planets and deal with the repercussions of that if they join the Frieza Force. In the case of magic, magic has been a part of DBZ since the beginning, so there's no issue in having magic users. Heck magic can even have clear advantages since they have utility over firepower.

For your hypothetical campaign, I think Tusk getting the Super Dragonballs to force Malo to fuse into Tusk as the dominant personality would be awesome. Maybe the half saiyan’s father could be part of Tusk’s gang. 😆 Dang, it definitely is a good inspiration for my own potential campaign

I would argue from a 5e prespective that the reason why Yamcha is useless is because despite being a thief rouge fists don't count a finesse weapons even if you multiclass into monk. He is doing way less damage than he should with wolf fang fist when he should be using a short sword.

I could imagine a spin on the Kami/Piccolo relationship with Malo and Tusk, where Tusk wants the same thing Malo does - to become Guardian of Earth. More for the power, assuming Malo wants to for moral reasons. But because he still views them as the same person, if Malo succeeds at the position, so does Tusk. So his machinations are all for that purpose, knowing that they can't kill Tusk or risk killing Malo too. So when Malo does succeed, Tusk just casually steps onto the lookout and takes a seat on the throne, takes credit for getting him this far and makes his claim that they are the same person, so he has as much right to the position of power as Malo does.

Also for any 5e players looking for some fun DB inspired content Check out the Stranger Worlds Dragonball sourcebook. It has a ton of stat blocks, races from the show, and even some subclasses to keep the general 5e feel. They have a discord server and I highly recommend you check them out its really good.

I actually have an ongoing Dragon Ball Campaign going on that I made my own custom homebrew for. My players love it and I do too, Dragon Ball is a super fun setting to do. I decided to run it in an alternate universe created by Zeno based on a deceased Goku and Vegeta's input plus a tome of Universe 7 history created by Beerus because Zeno wanted to hear the stories, but eventually got bored of hearing about it and decided to create a new story that he could watch in real time. I'm pretty happy with it and plan on compiling my homebrew into a single google doc to share with friends at some point.

Honestly, regarding Super Saiyan Blue: I think the milestone there is self-control. If you remember Goku vs Beerus, the destruction there was massive, and kept growing to the point where the universe was about to be destroyed after 3 more clashes. With Blue, however, I think they were trying to go for how the power that would explode outward and cause massive destruction to the surroundings was being redistributed and added to what they were dealing to their opponent. Of course, I still prefer the Z fights cos the destruction was oh so entertaining.

I actually ran a DBZ themed game. Well, a DB game. My focus was on collecting seven magic shards that, when gathered, granted one wish. Ironically, the players did fit with the other characters in DB. We had a bugbear monk/Barbarian that was raised by a human, a gun toting female artificer who was close to the bugbear, a bandit catperson, etc. It was pretty fun. We really leaned into the dragon ball bit with the wish granting shards, the mystical adventure type deal.

When it comes to DB settings, I think some of the best are those of DB Heroes, Xenoverse and or DB Online, as the video mentioned. These are fairly large settings, with a ton of Lore and species available with a LOT of flexibility. Xenoverse/DB Online's Time Patrol is a very convenient profession since you can group up any number of "players" with different backgrounds. The aspect of fixing changes in history makes for a good problem to solve that can last as long as the DM wants it to take. The flexibility of changes to history means you can get rid of characters like Goku and Gohan and maybe even turn them into antagonists. It just a really good setting.

I've thought about a Dragonball Campaign, My player character would be a mercenary treasure hunter named Grey, She's cursed to change into a werewolf when her life is in danger making her go berserk loosening her self in battle. As part of her werewolf transformation her clothes rip off so when she turn back to human she's naked and when she regains her self and there's a man around she will automatically scream and punches the guy so hard he flies across the room for seeing her naked like every girl does in anime. For her character milestone she learns to control her transformation and change at will even making a new hybrid form. She's a werewolf because I want a wolf theme character like Yamcha. As for a campaign setting I was a big fan of Masako X and others What If Dragonball story ideas and settings and I want to set up some kind of randomized game that mix up characters and settings so players can still run into classic Dragonball characters. I would roll for stuff like switching character locations, like make Ox and Chichi live in the mountains and find Goku well Grampa Gohan lived in a palace, switch character alignments like make good characters evil, evil characters good, Chaotic characters Lawful and Lawful characters Chaotic or even randomly switch a character's gender like make Bulma a man or Goku a girl. add new characters like what if Roshi had a daughter or Gohan found a Namki. A fun thing to roll for would be who is guardian of the earth or what alignment the setting it's self would take on. My favorite is a world where Garlic and Garlic Jr. rules the earth and the setting becomes Chaotic Evil something like Darksun. Goku becomes a cannibal to survive and Bulma is a scout for the Red Ribbon Raiders.

On a side note, using the 7 Princesses of Heart to represent the points... Is that perhaps a tease to a "How to write a Kingdom Hearts DnD Campaign" video? If so, you clever bastard, I'm hyped. I've run Power Ranger roleplaying games before, Hyper Force is one of my favorite actual play shows, and my friends are part of an RP podcast called Beast Champions that's doing Power Rangers as an RP, so I'd love to hear what advice you'd give for running a Power Rangers style RPG.

I've had an idea for a Dragon Ball campaign where the basic premise is "error 404 Goku not found", so instead the players are there. The plot would start with each player going after the Red Ribbon Army for their own reasons, and then progress through the plot of Dragon Ball from there.

12:10 16's death didn't trigger Super Saiyan 2 because of some connection that Toriyama failed to establish. His death was a consequence to Gohan's passive nature, the last straw before he decided he's seen enough suffering and now he's going to make the bad guys pay.

see, what I did while I was coming up with my *Dungeons and Dragon Ball* game (which is almost literally nothing but a conversion of D&D into Dragon Ball), is that my characters are in a seperate Universe which is one that participates in the Tournament of Power and possibly the Universal Tournament between Beerus and Champa. Although they can meet Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Piccolo, etc., at the point in which they meet them it would basically be kind of dumb to just overly rely on them because they've already built up so much of your character that instead of relying on Goku, Vegeta, or anyone else, you're strong enough at that point to GO AGAINST THEM if you really wanted to.

Great vid, but one quirk criticism. I don’t think excluding characters from the main series is necessary. I mean sure it would be bad for the PCs to just have Goku or Vegeta come and help them for every treat, but I think it can be handled like a buddy system in a Telltale game. If you just ask the characters for help their either only help to a certain degree or reject you entirely. But if you take the time to bond with them they’ll be more apt to help you. They could be sorta like summons who only appear in battle after certain conditions are met, like when a character drops below 0 HP and starts making death saves. That’s just my idea people can do whatever they want.

Actually a good point in time would be Age 1000 aka the timepoint of Dragonball Online. This is long after Goku and Vegeta have died, Krillin and Tien lead the new Turtle and Crane schools, there's a race of Majins along with refugees from New Namek, and by this time the Saiyan bloodline has diluted so much that every human Earthling has at least SOME Saiyan blood meaning it's possible for them to go Super Saiyan.

In dragonball legends you have goku wanting to fight all the villians but Beerus says shallot needs to do this. This could be a way to have the main cast and Players interact with them and have the players still be the ones to do this, and adding traing with the main cast like xenoverse could be a good character milestone for the players. After all if a female majin learns the kahmehameha from Goku or Roshi, they would turn it into a Majin Kahmehameha. Stuff like that is what makes DragonBall as a whole interesting as well, characters coping characters moves and making them their own way is the best thing, or getting stronger int their own way. This is why Vegeta having SSBE is a much better to give to the players because 1, a game did this, 2 surpassing someone using a different Evolutionary Line is key to a good story and character growth. An example of a twisted story of db from MaskakoX's What if Raditz Turned Good. When Raditz gets SSB and does not go Evolution but instead Mastered. And Vegeta gets SSJ4 instead, this turns the whole Characters growth around. And when they Fused in the Broly Movie making a new being having a new transformation because its not the same character. And I really wish you talked about Fusions and how they should be dealt of they are in someone's story, like one player takes control with The dance and the other takes control with Pottera. But overall thank you for giving us an example on how to do this thank you.

Gt was amazing in concept. Moments were iffy and I'd rather some of it be boiled down to its best parts and main big bads also it short handed us by never letting pan go super Saiyan. The GT series ended and I was holding it around a 8/10 and it just fell to a 3 cuz at no point did pan go ssj1 not even as a stall for time moment

Dragon Ball story would definitely work in D&D, especially if you make the Dragon balls the only way endgame for anyone to utilize the Wish spell. I don’t think an experience points leveling up system what kind of work along side a mile stone leveling system. Especially if you use the experience points as the characters “power level” I’ve always found it fascinating that despite the fact that people try and say that power levels don’t matter or that scouters aren’t necessary And yet in any form a fan based creation power levels are still utilized. Truthfully I felt the scouter was A fascinating piece of tech that I’m surprised Bulma never did anything with it.

I 100% support Dragon Ball roleplaying, it's something I've wanted to run for a very long time. However, I REALLY think D&D or Pathfinder are a terrible fit for high-powered anime. I would recommend either a system designed for super powerful characters, such as Mutants and Masterminds, or a fast, rules-light system like FATE or Savage Worlds. I can understand wanting to stick to a system you know, but I think not enough TTRPG players experiment with a lot of the really great systems out there.

I would also argue that super saiyan blue kinda sucked cuz it was just a recolor. Say what you like about GT, it FELT like a different form, it looked so different that it felt like a complete new level of power. Blue... is something that could be done by a 12 year old with Photoshop's recolor tool.

Gotta disagree on the point of 16 being the key to super saiyan 2 being bad. 16 was the perfect vehicle for Gohan to find understanding in his power. A gentle soul forced into an almost lifeless husk who's only purpose was to destroy is a tragic character. He's able to understand Gohan's caution and reluctance to fight. He's also able to put that need to fight and release his anger into a more logical explanation, rather than the Z fighters being "you're strong so you should fight"

"Yamcha is useless" Spoken like a person who truly started with DBZ and not the original series. Yamcha's either a Rogue or a Fighter with a banditry background and has a really good ability score spread, he's just outclassed by definition by Krillin and Tien both choosing a better class for the campaign and by all the alien characters combining a better class choice with a significantly innately stronger race. His main purpose from the second or third arc onward was mostly to be the guy worldly enough to be able to inform newcomers to the world of martial arts like Krillin and Goku who specific fighters they're going up are and what they're about, then to beat a few superhuman fighters in a tournament or villain arc himself to prove how strong he is, then get easily beaten by a mid-level guy so that the audience knows how strong _they_ are for when Goku comes in with a clutch victory. So in short, Yamcha isn't useless, he's a secondary/sidekick character enabled by Goku's background/class circumstance, like the squire to a Knight character. Also, he's my favorite character of the Dragon Ball franchise in spite of his relatively low combat output compared to the other combat characters (and he's still stronger by orders of magnitude than non-combat characters like Bulma, Oolong, etc.)

Even though the game was meh Kakarot at least did 16 and gohan slightly better. Giving gohan quests that went with 16. Not saying the story for those were great but it was far better then “hi I’m gohan I just meet you” and “hi I’m 16 let me sacrifice myself and give you a character defining speech”

I do not agree that the world of DBZ (Dragon Ball Z) can be represented with the D&D system or style. Perhaps it is only possible if we limit ourselves to most of DB (Dragon Ball)... but already towards the end of DB and from the beginning of DBZ the power system of D&D remains too small. I have seen several role-playing manuals that try to represent the world of Dragon Ball but they all disappoint me because of this, they try to be D&D instead of Dragon Ball. I started some time ago to write my own version of a manual using the Fight Power numbers literally (for example, being that at the beginning of DBZ Picoro and Goku have 400 Power points and Picoro is capable of performing a maximum of 2 energy attacks of a power of 1400) and using the C-System system. But I left it halfway through being distracted by other things.

I know it's not really relevant since it was hypothetical, but I could see Tusk's motivation being that he wants to re-fuse with Malo, to regain full power as the dominant personality. Normal Dragon Balls can't do this, since they usually work on a consent system (see: Goku refusing to be teleporting back to Earth by Shenron). However, the Super Dragon Balls are limitless, and thus wouldn't require Malo's consent to merge the two back together. It's a nice simple & personal motivation, which still has to do with a pursuit of power but also ties into the idea of not feeling whole and accepting all parts of yourself. I could picture the finale after Tusk is defeated, lying dying on the ground at Malo's feet, cursing him for just "throwing himself away". Possibly with Malo having the option to willingly re-fuse with Tusk, but with himself as the dominant personality. Edit: Looked into the comment section and saw people beat me to the punch. Whoops. But, still. Also, I would LOVE to watch a Dragon Ball D&D campaign. Just saiyan.

@@TheLoadingCrew for me the best one will always be the original dragon Ball because z is like six enemies over the course of hundreds of episodes, and it feels like it's four or five episodes spread out as thin as they possibly could. There's no reason a fight in a TV show, in my eyes, should take more than three episodes.

You can't. Seriously people, stop trying to do stupid shit like this with 5e. It's not built to handle that style of play or level of power. There's no point even thinking of a dragonball themed game unless you can one shot a planet. D&D does not allow that, nor is there anyway in 5e to get that kind of power. Just pick a different system already. There are systems out there like Mutants and Masterminds and Icons that can give you exactly that level of power and are more than capable of handling a dragonball themed game. I hate it so much when people try and force an idea to work with 5e that can't possibly work with 5e. Get out of your comfort zone and try something different already.
