Dear Darren, I have been watching your speeches and videos ever since I have become a Toastmaster. Thank you for sharing your great tips. Today I gave a speech which was a quite challenge for me because I haven’t given any speech in a year. And your tips helped me a lot. I had to write my speech in just 3 hours and another speech in just 30 minutes. Without great tips it wouldn’t have been possible.

You can. You are not looking for AN opening, you are looking for the best opening to set up your point. There are many options. It depends on your point.

This was great, thanks, I have been researching "what is speech writing and examples" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Penayla Dignified Paramountcy - (just google it ) ? It is a great one of a kind guide for discovering how to make a confident speech in english minus the headache. Ive heard some super things about it and my brother in law got cool success with it.

I'm supposed to be writing a speech as if I were speaking at a joint meeting in the Capitol Building. I know you said not to start with the typical "its an honor to be here" but I've seen a lot of videos of people giving speeches at these joint meetings and that's how they start along with addressing the vice president and speaker of the house. Should I go that route? What do you suggest?

@@rossmcfadden8826 what about you incorporate his tip for the use of “imagine” and then specify the fact/statement. For example if your speech is against the death penalty, say something like “Imagine I told you that 4% of people who are undergoing the death penalty are innocent. One in twenty. Being killed for a crime you no nothing about. Leaving family behind, friends, partners, children. What if, this is the reality? That at least 4% of people experiencing capital punishment are innocent.” Btw I don’t know if this is good, it’s just an idea.
