Anyone who complains about students using this for their school work has never had to work 3 jobs in order to pay for classes that have nothing to do with their major and actively take time away from their lives that they need in order to have more time to work to be able to pay for those classes in the first place. Especially with the egos that some professors have, a gen ed class with 6 hours of homework a week is ridiculous. I’ll never feel bad for this type of thing. It’s a wonderful tool to cut down on the time it takes for busywork.

Well, back in the day, The Open University calculated that one should have the ability to set aside 30 hrs a week for a year's ft undergraduate work. There were 2 credits for a year. They advised that if you had a full time job, then there should be considerable planning if you wanted the whole year in one year. Their courses were worthy. Most working people did one credit a year. I work in psychiatry and you occassionally run into "professionals" of all ranks, that have sneaked in some side door and are blagging it. I would not one of these characters blagging my medical decisions. There was a time in the movies when a dance by Fred Astaire was taken in one take. Now looking at anything for longer that half a second or so on a Netflix screen, is usually impossible because the shot moves on. I remember my overnight stays in the University, working sixteen hours with code or even more. I do this with piano now. Long is Good too.

So true I am way to stressed. The ego of some professors and how they are harsh on grading ,especially when the class is a useless class!. I signed up to go to trade school and I was told I needed high level math for that!? So instead I gotta work my way up and study social science subjects that I hate😢.

seriously just saved me for my bachelor's degree im literally just getting so i can hurry up to Uni and get work on my master's and PhD. the hoops we have to go through, let alone being an older person who feels the clock ticking harder, this sort of short cut stuff on things i KNOW i can do if i had the time, energy, and as we say in the disability community, the spoons, i will never feel bad. i have arthritis and im only JUST about to be 30 in sept. i have so much schooling left to do for my dream job but i've committed to it. i need to allow myself the grace of taking the easier, less time-consuming way out sometimes on things so i have more time on things that actually matter for my future and life in the grand scheme of things. being autistic i really struggle with guilt over this sort of thing but i know i just can't keep up otherwise but, if im capable of the work, i don't feel as bad. it like getting a Roomba when you're perfectly capable of doing it but are just busy... sure you could vacuum yourself but, making things easier for yourself creates more free time and peace which we can all use more of, these days especially.

Despite the obvious concerns about this technique being picked up by anti plagiarism software I think there’s another issue. As a test of this, I uploaded an assignment I’d had marked as Merit at Masters level along with the rubric. Two separate AI’s graded it as a Distinction level. They also could not give suggestions for improvement which matched the feedback I was given. So they either aren’t capable of giving this type of feedback or my markers are incredibly stingy.

Your instructor should always provide a marking guide or rubric for a graded assessment that sets out the objective criteria used to judge your work. If they aren't, ask them for one. It is your right as a student to have clear expectations set out for you. You can use the rubric to challenge a mark you feel doesn't accurately reflect your mastery of the learning objectives being assessed.

Or you can just follow the rubric and write the essay; this sidesteps the purpose of writing. It's really quite amazing how much work a student will put into faking an essay. But why not, so many social media profiles are fake, so why not fake it all. If someone is too busy for college, they are too busy for college.

Dr Stapleton, I am a Learning Designer at a university. Whilst I think your videos offer great value - I think you need to temper this one with better advice. Suggesting that students ask ChatGPT to generate options and then "pick a sentence" for use in their paper is suggesting they be academically dishonest by representing work they haven't produced as their own. Nowhere do you caution that they should first ensure they understand the AI use policies at the university, program/degree and course/unit level. Nor do you mention citation frameworks and methodology statements. I am a longtime fan of your work but I think you get a Fail for this.

why? i once had an instructor ask for a one page paper about an opinion of a class presenter. that instructor took all of our work and "graded" them and included all of those ideas in his new book. where's my payout?

If you are a learning designer then you need to consider the fact that so won't ever get worse barring a calamity and will get better and better and effect area of work life. It will become the same as people using a spell checker or a calculator. Is it intellectually dishonest to not mark up that you are using a spell checker or grammarly? If the university has some antiquated rule about using llm's you can still get inspiration for your sentences then come up with your own using the best bits in your own words. If you grab a thesaurus and look up more interesting words is that taboo too? In this case majority of work is done by the user then getting help on areas to improve. That's typically what a good teacher or tutor should do. Ideally you would also want to keep track over time so can target those weaker areas and can also chat gpt to drill on those with some test paragraphs for example then when it comes to an exam you will remember and know how it also score highly.

@theaiconsultantuk If you don't understand that citation is necessary when you lift entire sentences whole cloth, if you don't understand that a sentence can constitute a major idea or conclusion - please share your unsolicited consultation with some other lucky person. Academia has academic honesty guidelines. Dr Andy just counselled students to ignore them.
@theaiconsultantuk
@theaiconsultantuk 9 ай бұрын
@@KerryJ It seems you have a misunderstanding on how LLM's work when you say it is "lifting entire sentences whole cloth" - no these are typically totally unique sentences never seen before and pass plagiarism checkers. He didn't counsel people to ignore honesty guidelines as that was not the purpose of the video. If the University has guidelines saying that you can't use AI (in most cases dumb) then using it and pretending you haven't is a different story - if the Dr was creating a video how to circumvent detection that's a different matter. If you are asking LLM's to pull research then yes you would then check the validity of such research but if you are using it to help you write a sentence better or helping you to work through links between different content then if you copy it and AI is allowed then no issues. He may well touch on the variety of different rules and regulations that may come into play which could form a wide variety of opinions but that's a different matter. He talks about AI and study and degrees - does he have to have a disclaimer on every video like on every pack of cigarettes? I came from a time when students had no University course had Internet when I studied and I was one of the people to push for it and I expect would be vary rare to find any courses today that would be No Internet Allowed. As with any technology it brings ways to use it ethically or not. Education will be totally turned on it's head over the next 10 years and we are in the early stages but those changes can come so fast your head spins. Have a good festive period

What is the goal of education? Is it to arm students with the tools and knowledge necessary to succeed in a profession? In the medical field I've seen doctors and coworkers of every level Google questions, reference resources, and phone friends. The success they find in those situations doesn't come from memory or their own creativity. Resourcefulness is king when it comes to such complex tasks. It's just like how teachers restricted calculator usage when we were young, now we all happen to carry one on our phone.

-> I believe we are meant to be like Jesus in our hearts and not in our flesh. But be careful of AI, for it is just our flesh and that is it. It knows only things of the flesh (our fleshly desires) and cannot comprehend things of the spirit such as peace of heart (which comes from obeying God's Word). Whereas we are a spirit and we have a soul but live in the body (in the flesh). When you go to bed it is your flesh that sleeps but your spirit never sleeps (otherwise you have died physically) that is why you have dreams. More so, true love that endures and last is a thing of the heart (when I say 'heart', I mean 'spirit'). But fake love, pretentious love, love with expectations, love for classic reasons, love for material reasons and love for selfish reasons that is a thing of our flesh. In the beginning God said let us make man in our own image, according to our likeness. Take note, God is Spirit and God is Love. As Love He is the source of it. We also know that God is Omnipotent, for He creates out of nothing and He has no beginning and has no end. That means, our love is but a shadow of God's Love. True love looks around to see who is in need of your help, your smile, your possessions, your money, your strength, your quality time. Love forgives and forgets. Love wants for others what it wants for itself. Take note, love works in conjunction with other spiritual forces such as faith and patience. We should let the Word of God be the standard of our lives not AI. If not, God will let us face AI on our own and it will cast the truth down to the ground, it will be the cause of so much destruction like never seen before, it will deceive many and take many captive in order to enslave them into worshipping it and abiding in lawlessness. We can only destroy ourselves but with God all things are possible. God knows us better because He is our Creater and He knows our beginning and our end. Our prove text is taken from the book of John 5:31-44, 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12, Daniel 7-9, Revelation 13-15, Matthew 24-25 and Luke 21. Let us watch and pray... God bless you as you share this message to others.
