Another superb video, thank you for sharing your amazing skills! 2 questions if I may:- -Do you recommend randomizing the velocities and swing of notes for a house piano such as these to add natural feel to them or keep them less organic? -The D.O.D track, is it a heavily processed M1 Piano 16 (to sound thinner) or is it a different piano? Thanks!
@Bthelick Жыл бұрын
Great questions. changing velocities / timing for more organic feel is certainly something you can try, but randomising is not the solution imo. In dance music, the aim of doing this would be increase human feel and groove, in order to achieve more dance-ability , but it should be done with purpose and experience, knowing when to push or pull the beat , accent the chord, or note inside the chord etc. This comes with time, especially as you learn to play live, but more importantly, with the ability to dance yourself! Randomising will not give organic feel, just a looser feel maybe, or messy feel (this can be desirable in some cases like lofi genres) but it certainly risks the groove, which we have to prioritise. human / organic feel is not random, ironically only machines can be truly random! By all means experiment with it. Some common practices are reducing the velocities of the 5th / extensions of the chord to help the 3rd stand out, or pulling syncopated notes late in an other wise square pattern to manually swing, note lengths are a big part of it too, observing live players helps here. But bare in mind House and Techno's origin's are that of machines (after disco of course) and have been keeping people dancing for several decades, so neither is right or wrong. If you want to study more organic dance rhythms I would always recommend absorbing acoustic Latin music, and observing it's influences on dance, however not all of that culture has translated, but some is absolutely fundamental (like dembo rhythms for example)

Thanks for this video! What you think about the chords progressions that use Artist as Porter Robinson or Madeon? I know is not that common in house, but I think the music that they do is very musically rich. Definitely there is some interesting in terms music theory and harmony inside of his songs. (sorry for my bad English, I'm not native speaker haha) Also the main difference between the French House and the UK (more mainstream) House.
@Bthelick2 жыл бұрын
Never apologise for being multi-lingual! Your English is better than my attempts at any other language! I love Porter Robinson! especially the side project he did under "Virtual Self". He's definitely a 'muso' he uses more interesting chords than average imo. I like Madeon's more recent tracks, more chill less noisy, and some good grooves, reminds me of Flume sometimes. Thanks for the Video ideas we can definitely look into those.

are you in locked scale or something, i'm looking at the midi here and attempting to play along on my piano and yea it's not matching up ? at 7:30 it shows your 2 notes are A and E but what i'm gettin is B and F# .. so you must be in locked scale or something. i guess i can't learn these songs sadly. or this technique. ppl really shouldn't do tutorials in locked scale
@Bthelick9 ай бұрын
Not locked to scale, I'm just using the white notes. But I say at the beginning everything is converted to A visually. The track I make later is in B, it's transposed up 2 in real-time if you want to play along but that is not the purpose of this. The title is how to "write" piano house not "play". 2 very different things. I understand you're frustrated, but I think your trying to take the wrong lesson. You can learn from this, but It's not supposed to be showing you songs to play along with, I teach in musical principles of relative distance, as the base key doesn't matter on music, the lesson is not WHAT to play, it's WHY it's played , taught in intervals. It's not a piano lesson, It's a harmony theory lesson. Thus why I draw in the midi in this one vs playing. It's a deliberate branding choice as I have data that many djs / dance producers are put off by piano playing in tutorials so I stopped.

What chord were they ultimately? I’ve never seen that way of working before usually eg a progression of 4 1 6 7 would be triads not just bass notes (and top 1 n 5 common tones) I put in G A E into a chord identifier and it said no chords match . Love what your doing sounds amazing just like to understand what’s going on theory wise
@Bthelick Жыл бұрын
The chords don't need names if you understand how they got to that point! 👍😜 But if you Absolutely most know, A E and G in this context makes Amin7th no 3rd. When it comes to musical arrangement , A chord progression is rarely the actual triads in their standard form, different notes can be spread across different roles/parts of even within the same part can be 'voiced ' in any order possible. the bass notes give us the clue as the implied chords, implied being the key word. Just because the C is not in that A, E, G chord doesn't mean it's not a minor chord, it's implied from the other music either side of it and the fact that we are in the minor scale. The lesson here is simply that; because we know every chord can contain every note via extensions (as long as we stay in scale) then any notes are valid to put together. Not every chord needs to contain all of it's notes , if you just want the 1st 7th and 9th of a 9th chord (because that happens to voice/sound/flow better) that's absolutely fine. The rest is implied
@Bthelick Жыл бұрын
Also, remember the western chord naming 'standard' was basically drawn up by a bunch of stoned jazz students. It's all over the place! If you can't find a name for a chord that doesn't mean it stops existing, or is wrong/bad in any way.

this is sooo enlightening ! I can see that , apart form the 2 octave apart root notes, on top you use mostly 2 notes or 3,. When does it stop to sound "piano house", is it when you use more notes on top, like extended chords? is that in fact the secret sauce of piano house": drone tones and not more that 2-3 on top of your root? thanks for sharing DA knowledge brother.
@Bthelick Жыл бұрын
There's no hard fast rules on things like only 2 notes high up ect, the 5 examples at the start show they all vary in that sense. Bear in mind I keep things simple to get the idea across too, but keeping it simple never hurts in general. By all means start simple to get you used to the idea , and expand once the idea is already working. Also it's worth mentioning, the higher up you go on the difficulty scale of chosen drone notes, the more notes in the chord might be needed to 'connect' it to the lower notes.

All root position, no inversions. Sure makes it easy to identify a chord by just looking at its bass note, but the second someone throws in an inversion, this analysis falls apart. It's a shame it's so rigidly root position too, because inversions can radically change the sound of a chord and progression. Wish we saw more interesting theory in piano house, but alas, it's just dance music after all. What's funny is that classical cadences can translate really well to piano riffs, provided you actually avoid ever resolving to the tonic chord from the V chord, as that would sound super out of place in dance music. Avoid resolving to the tonic, and it floats along with suspense, but then it also becomes modal (that is, it's in the key of the i chord, but never actually hits that chord) which would likely throw off DJs looking to key-match tracks. I'm just rambling now. Something I want to experiment with for fun with more advanced chord voicing, voice leading, and some borrowed Bach cadences.
@Bthelick Жыл бұрын
Of course, but this is called "easy piano house" it's aimed at beginners. to teach a principle we have to keep it in scope. I go over inversions in other videos. It's the same reason I don't use Roman Numerals or Greek terms etc, effective teaching uses the language of the audience , and as a classically trained musician working professionally for DJs as producers in the real world, I am in a privileged position to understand that not only do they not use language such as "V cadence" or "tonic" they would actively avoid it (and most certainly not be clicking on my videos!) The purpose of this channel is to be a conduit between those two worlds.
@CaptJackAubreyOfTheRoyalNavy Жыл бұрын
@@Bthelick Understood. Please excuse my late night ramblings. I wasn't criticizing the video, but more the state of music theory in dance music. I was just thinking out loud.

@@CaptJackAubreyOfTheRoyalNavy all good, you're just trying to help. I agree with most of the ramble tbh, i do aim to get everyone up to that level of musicianship by the end, where appropriate to the context of course, for part of being a great musician is recognizing that certain club music works best as an anti-theory genre!

Which notes are you referring to?

@@Bthelick I haven't checked all of them, first midi is C key, but sounds like D key. second midi is C key, but sounds like F# key. did you use the transpose function?
@Bthelick Жыл бұрын
@@luvofficial948 oh I see yes, at the beginning I say I have converted all the midi to show in Amin. I do that most of the time, so we can concentrate on learning the harmony principles regardless of key. The actual keys are; Mk - Bm (+2) Woolford, Dod, low steppa - D#m (+/-6) 2nd city - A#m (+1)

@@Bthelick I put the same placement as your MIDI, but it sounded different so I was confused. lol Sorry, I'm not good at listening. Thank you very much.

Not at all Thomas, there's probably just a knowledge gap somewhere else Let's try to fill the gap. What exactly are you struggling with?

@@Bthelick Sorry if my Englist is not that good. I am someone who learn by doing :-) But I guess it is putting those chords together! By the way I ma very glad I found your channel. Just start with 2 chords and pick only 1 note to repeat in common with both chords. Stay in Aminor scale so you only use white notes. Let me know if that gets you started.
