The basic rule of Yielding the Right of Way is that if two vehicles arrive at a 4-way-stop intersection at the exact same time, then the vehicle on the right gets to go first. The vehicle on the left is yielding the right of way to the vehicle on their right. In this video, we look at some of the other situations that commonly come up at 4-way intersections, and who has the right of way.

@@QueenYemithat’s only prevalent on whether or not an intersection is full. in general terms it’s whoever gets there first goes, but also depending on if cars are turning or staying straight or carrying big loads, sometimes it changes on the vehicle to the right of you or just whoever feels like moving cuz they’re ignorant and in a rush.

Hi! I have had my license for a little while now, and I have moved to a place that has a lot of four way stops. I find myself very nervous at them because it seems like the cars around me are going even though it's my turn- especially if I stop for a few seconds. Any advice?
@HowSkills4 жыл бұрын
Since there are a lot of four way stops in your area, the local driver's there may have become very impatient with having to stop so often so they don't wait like they should. And, if people are in that much of a hurry, just let them go. When you get to the stop sign that controls you, make a full and complete stop, but don't linger if it's your turn to go. Other driver's take any hesitation as a sign that you want them to go ahead and go. Make sure you scan the intersection ahead of you as you're driving up to your stop sign, and pay close attention to who is arriving ahead of who so you'll be prepared to leave the stop sign when it's really your turn. But if someone leaves when it's not their turn, don't take it personally or let it get you upset or mad. Driving angry is dangerous to you and those around you, and it's just not worth it.

There's a roundabout around my place, and all 4 sides have yield signs...I've never seen that. How does that work?
@HowSkills5 жыл бұрын
Normally it means that anybody entering from any side has to yield to anyone already in the roundabout. Enter when there is a gap and it’s safe to do so. Roundabouts have actually been proven to be safer than 4-way stop intersections, causing fewer accidents!
@crazyoncoffee4 жыл бұрын
VisualxxKhaos That works like any normal roundabout. Yield to any cars already in the roundabout. When it’s clear and you can enter the roundabout, go. All other cars have to wait on the side roads. If you come at the same time as someone to your right, the person on the right goes first, just like with a 4 way stop. If 2 cars approach on opposite sides of the intersection, with a roundabout both cars can usually enter the roundabout at the same time and complete their maneuvers as they are in opposite sides of the circle. The most important thing to remember is to yield to any cars currently in the roundabout, then take your turn when there is a gap in traffic in the circle

One thing I want to know is: When you say “the person who got there first” do you mean the person that got in the line first or who actually got to the stop sign first because there’s sometimes lines before the intersection
@HowSkills3 жыл бұрын
That means the person that stopped at the stop sign (or the white stop line if there is one) first is the one that should go first before other vehicles arriving close to the same time. A white stop line takes precedence over the stop sign and determines where your actual stopping point will be. It doesn’t matter when you got in a line leading up to the intersection, only when you arrived and stopped at the sign or line controlling the intersection.

What about at a two way stop (not 4 way stop) similar to situation at 3:25 of this video but you arrived at intersection first and are making a left turn and other car is going straight? Is right of way decided by who arrived first or by who is going straight and who is turning in this situation where the car turning arrived to intersection first?

The right of way is first decided by who got there first, so in that case, you would go first. If you arrived at the same time and one of you was going to turn across the path of the other, the vehicle going straight would go first.

Hi Stan, at 5:45 wasn't that left turning car supposed to yield to you? Because you were going straight and I thought usually left turners yield to straight ways.
@HowSkills3 жыл бұрын
It doesn't show it in the video because of how I edited it, but the other driver had actually arrived at the intersection before I did. So by the rule of "whoever gets there first has the right to proceed first", I had to yield the right of way to the driver turning left.

Great explanation, coming from England to Canada I came across these kinds of intersection for the first time. In England, when you do have a four way intersection, they'll have traffic lights, every time. More often though, there'll be a roundabout instead, which effectively acts like a three way junction but smoother because you don't have to come to a complete stop if there's no one approaching from your right. With the density of traffic in England I couldn't possibly imagine these working there without bringing everything to a halt (which is presumably why we don't have any), but now that I know about these, I'll be better able to handle them in Canada!

Why do so many people think they can turn left in front of a person going straight through the intersection? So much road rage comes from this and lots of bad accidents. Sometime I think it’s a case where someone thinks they arrived a fraction of a second before the person going straight but again that just creates a lot of issues in my opinion.
@HowSkills4 жыл бұрын
A lot of people really don't understand the rules for yielding at a 4-Way stop. And others just don't act like they don't apply to them. So always proceed through a 4-Way intersection with caution when there are other vehicles arriving at about the same time. You're responsible for doing what you know is correct...just watch out for those that aren't doing the right thing for whatever reason!

Thanks for sharing. In the video it can be seen that if a vehicle came to the stop sign and the other vehicle on the other side is still rolling towards their stop line, then the first vehicle waits until the rolling vehicle appears to stop. -- Sometimes I have seen people moving from STOP line if they arrive first and the other vehicles on other sides are slowing down but yet to reach the stop line. -- This makes me wonder if one should come to complete stop, wait and see other cars coming to a stop as well, and then proceed to their turn?
@HowSkills3 жыл бұрын
It's okay to go ahead and leave from the STOP line as long as you have already come to a complete stop and it is your turn to go.

at 4:09 in the video there is a person crossing the street as the vehicle starts to go through the intersection. Doesn't that vehicle have to stop with people are in the crosswalk
@HowSkills4 жыл бұрын
Yes, if a pedestrian is in the crosswalk, vehicles have to stop and yield to them. I hadn't noticed that in the video. The vehicle could've at least moved slowly through the intersection as the man walked, but it looked to me like the walker actually had to hurry up as that vehicle accelerated quickly through the intersection. Kinda rude! This wasn't the case here, but pedestrians also shouldn't suddenly enter the crosswalk from a sidewalk or curb into the path of an already moving vehicle.

5:00 Now. What if 4 cars arrived the same time and all of them wanted to turn?
@HowSkills4 жыл бұрын
If they’re all turning right, it doesn’t matter...they could all turn at the same time without interfering with each other. If just some of them are turning right, they would get to go first because they wouldn’t be crossing anyone’s potential path. Those going left would wait til those turning right had gone, and then if they were next to each other, the one on the far right gets to go next. If they were all turning left, that’s the hardest scenario. No definite rule here, and the odds are definitely against this happening, but in the real world, somebody will be in a big hurry or think they got there first, and they’ll go ahead and go. In all the different situations that can occur at a four-way stop, proceed with caution when it’s your turn to go. And be ready to put on the brakes and control your temper when someone goes when it’s not their turn!

At 3:28 What if both cars to your left arrived at the same time and you had your turn signal to make a left? I am assuming, you would first let one of the cars cross and then you proceed? What about the second car on the left? What if that car thinks that he/she has right of way because he/she was stopped, but not at stop sign but behind a car that was stopped at stop sign, can second car proceed without making a stop at stop sign? I encountered this situation today and someone almost hit me. When I reached the four way stop intersection, Two cars were to my right. One at the stop sign and one behind that car. I let the first one proceed and then I turned to the left. the second car did not make a complete stop and accelerated towards me and almost hit me. His thought was that he was stopped; albeit behind a car that was stopped at intersection.
@HowSkills4 жыл бұрын
You were in the ”right”, so to speak. They car to your right should've waited and gone after you. Their stopping behind the other car doesn't count as stopping at the intersection. They have to pull up and stop at either the stop sign or the white stop line before they can establish their turn to go and then proceed through the intersection. The car that went out of turn was wrong in doing so but when someone like that makes the wrong choice or is just aggressive and purposely go out of turn, it is best to just let them do their thing. Not worth an accident or road rage. Sorry this happened to you and glad you didn't get in an accident.

Wow this helped me a whole bunch, thank you SO much 🙌 Edit actually I do have a question though, does yielding mean that if its your turn to go then your signaling to the other drivers when it's your turn? Unless you are going straight
@HowSkills3 жыл бұрын
You do need to use your signals if you'll be turning right or left, and otherwise you just let other drivers go before you (yield to them the right to go before you do} if they arrived at the intersection before you did. In the event you arrive at the same time as another driver, the person to the right gets to go first, so in that case, the driver on the left would yield the right of way to the driver to their right.

If there is a ‘stop sign’ and a ‘yield sign’ in a four way intersection. person #1 arrived at the stop sign before person#2 reached the yield sign does person#1 have the right of way?

That's an odd and unsafe configuration for a four-way intersection, but if person #1 is controlled by a stop sign, they really shouldn't go until the vehicle that's controlled by the yield sign has gone. A yield sign requires you to give way to moving traffic but not to stop, so if they saw you at a stop sign, they're probably not thinking you're going to move until they are through the intersection. That's what makes this intersection unsafe...too many ways other driver's actions/intentions can be wrongly assumed resulting in accidents. They need to replace that yield sign with a stop sign or simply give vehicles coming from that direction the absolute right of way and get rid of the yield.

what if we arrive at the same time and we are both turning onto the same road but they’re across from me, whi goes first?
@HowSkills3 жыл бұрын
The vehicle that would be turning across another lane goes second. If you’re the one making a hard right onto the road, you’d go first.

Nice video, thanks. I live in Florida, we have stop-sign-controlled intersections where 4 lanes (left & right turns with 2 thru lanes) cross similarly laid out 4 lane roads. It is absolute pandemonium. Plus, nobody follows any of the basic rules. I hate these dangerous roadway messes; they need to be replaced with circles. Also, you should address what to do when your vision of cross traffic is obscured from the location of the stop sign or stop line.

Thanks for this! Question, if I'm at a traffic light and I'm turning left on a green light, and the person opposite me is turning right and they also have a green light, who has the right away? And in the same scenario what if the person turning right has a green light and also a yield sign, does that make a difference?
@HowSkills4 жыл бұрын
If you both have a green and you both arrive at the intersection at the same time, the person opposite you turning right would have the right of way. If the person turning right has a yield sign, they would have to yield to all other traffic and wait on you to turn first before making their turn.

Yeah but you still need to be careful. If say you’re turning left and he’s turning right and you’re both in the intersection, you should ONLY turn left if you can see what’s coming behind him. If it’s a van for example, it may be hard to see. You can move slightly over to the left to see when you’re entering the intersection. If that’s not possible, I’d let him go first until you can see behind for approaching traffic. I’d you don’t do this, you can get T Boned. It’s the worst crash for you!

Dear Stan, Thank you for your very helpful video. Can you please explain the situation at 5:45? The car opposite you wants to turn left, so shouldn't you have priority over it? Also, why did you not yield right of way to the red car, which was to your right? Thank you very much in advance, I am driving my first car tomorrow and I am freshening up on my Right of Way knowledge. :)
@HowSkills4 жыл бұрын
The first rule about the Right of Way is that whoever arrives at the intersection first, regardless of their position related to you, gets to proceed first. And if there were three other vehicles that also came to that intersection slightly after you did, then whoever arrived 2nd, 3rd, or 4th, gets to go in order after that. Although this clip in the video doesn't show it, the car opposite me had arrived at the intersection and stopped before I arrived and stopped, so they got to go before I did. The car to the right of me had arrived and stopped after I got there, so I had the right to go before them. "First come - First served", is the main rule at an intersection...if you get to the intersection first before other vehicles, you get to proceed before they do. The other rules only apply when two or more vehicles arrive at the exact same time at a 4-way stop. In that case, whoever is to the farthest right goes first, and so on according to the other situational guidelines. It can be a little complicated, that's for sure, but remember that if you get to the intersection before any of the other vehicles, you get to proceed first, whether they're on your right or on your left. If you arrived at the exact same time that a vehicle to your right did, they get to go before you do. I hope this helps, and if you have any other questions, please ask!

Is the order of right of way affected when everyone on all sides have to yield to pedestrians? I feel like I'd forget the order by the time all the pedestrians fully crossed lol. Or in another example say technically another vehicle arrived to the stop sign first but they're yielding to pedestrians but you don't have to for where you're going. I'm assuming you can just skip the order of time and instead go by convenience or opportunity.
@HowSkills2 жыл бұрын
Yes, if pedestrians block one driver from taking their turn, it’s acceptable for the next-in-line driver that isn’t blocked to go ahead and go.

Cities/towns should consider implementing roundabouts.
