Yo Yo Jigging for Yellowtail is a popular and incredibly effective technique for catching these tasty fish. It is a pretty simple technique, but getting dialed in and doing it correctly is key.
In this video I walk you through the technique on how to use the Yo Yo Jig for Yellowtail.
My go to set up for the Yo Yo jig is the Okuma PCH Custom 7' Heavy rod matched up with a Tesoro 12S Star Drag Reel. These are high speed reels that have a lot of line retrieve per crank of the handle and plenty of stopping power on these brutal fish.
One thing I forgot to mention in the video is line. For fishing the Yo Yo, it is generally a reaction bite and line size doesn't matter. The heavier the better. I generally use 65lb braid with a 40lb top shot.

@DaveysWorldFishing

Hi Robert. Thank you for the kind words. You definitely want to have some drag available for the fish. If you completely tighten the drag you risk pulling hooks and/or breaking line. I hope that helps.

What length of topshot monofilament on top of the braid?
@DaveysWorldFishing
@DaveysWorldFishing 11 ай бұрын
Great question. I usually go pretty short. If I’m fishing a seven foot to, I’ll go four or five feet on the leader. It’s a fast action reaction bite, so you don’t need much at all.

I have a tesoro 10 with 65 backing and I run 40# topshot. This was my jigstick reel before I got the trinidad 20.. I believe my topshot is usually 50 yards.. Should I re spool my reel and use a shorter topshot? Or is this good enough to use as is just put new mono before each trip
@DaveysWorldFishing

You still have a ton of braid on there, so you should be good. Fresh top shot is probably fine. Plus you can change it up for varying conditions.

Great video Dave but what line weight do you use? What top shot? How long of a top shot? 250 yards of 50lb braid enough for 30-40 pound size fish? Thanks, btw I subscribed because your info is very good. Thanks
@DaveysWorldFishing
@DaveysWorldFishing 3 жыл бұрын
First off, thank you for subscribing. I appreciate it. 250 yds is a lot of line. We were fishing in about 100’ of water, so only about 33yds. As far as top shot goes, I generally go with a length shorter than my rod. 4-5’ is all I use. That way no knots have to go through the guides. Some people like to go quite a bit longer, but shorter is my personal pretend it works well for me.

Gonna go first time and got a pen 500 with a tiger conventional rod with 50 lb line. Do I need a leader line to attach the yo-yo or do I tie it straight to the braid . If so what lb do you reccomend for the leader. Thank you
@DaveysWorldFishing
@DaveysWorldFishing 3 жыл бұрын
Good for you for going out! Personally, I always use a leader. Being a reaction bite, the fish aren’t line shy. I’d go 40lb fluorocarbon leader. Fluor over mono because of the abrasion resistance since you are fishing at or near the bottom and kelp.

Can you speak more on the swimming action of these jigs? Do they kick side to side? Just slightly wobble? I'm just curious as to what about these jigs triggers a reaction bite? I'm from upstate NY where I jig for trout and salmon. The trout I target, mostly Lake Trout ("lakers"), LOVE to case lures retrieved vertically. I fish with a slow pitch jigging setup, but I want to try yoyo jigging. If I can find a jig shape that kicks and wobbles as I crank it up, I think these trout will happily chase it. Plastic swim baits with good paddle tails that thump are effective when retrieved vertically, but I'm a metal head. Lol. Thanks!
@DaveysWorldFishing
@DaveysWorldFishing Жыл бұрын
The YoYo is a pretty fast retrieve. Most of these jigs have a pretty subtle wobble as opposed to the wobble with kick of the lighter surface iron. For the most part, it is purely a reaction bite. Color probably has s bit to do with it as well. If you can find a good YoYo heavy iron with good angles to it, I’m sure you’ll get that erratic kick that you are probably looking for. Sorry I can’t be more help.
@matthewbeckwith663
@matthewbeckwith663 Жыл бұрын
@@DaveysWorldFishing hey Dave! No worries 👍 that's a helpful response. These jigs remind me of a diamond jig that has been flattened on one side. Good news is that the trout target like a fast vertical retrieve!

What # line would you recommend? I’m thinking 65lb spectra to a 40lb leader but I’ve heard some guys use 80lb to 50/60lb leader.
@DaveysWorldFishing
@DaveysWorldFishing 2 жыл бұрын
I generally go 65braid to 40 leader. The heavier is fine as well. Really, the heavier you can go the better. When YoYo fishing, it is purely a reaction bite and the fish generally aren’t stalking the bait, so the heavier the better.

Hi Jake- I like the 30-60 PCH. Still have e Pugh action robot that when you do get bit, the rod will still do most of the work for you. It’s a great YoYo as well as live bait stick.

How heavy of iron? I have some tadys that are 6oz but is that heavy enough for the current?
@DaveysWorldFishing
@DaveysWorldFishing 2 жыл бұрын
Hi David- 6oz is a pretty standard iron. Clearly it depends on the current as you mentioned. If you are dropping down and see a lot of scope or angle to your line, you will want to go heavier. If you your line is straight up and down with that iron, than you are good. Another thing you might want to experiment with is the actual size/length of the iron. Sometimes you can find the same size iron have different weights. I will occasionally like to drop a longer iron down that is the same in weight to some of my smaller ones. Opposite as well. Drop to a smaller, heavier iron if you see or hear that the fish are keyed in on smaller bait. Hope that helps.
@DAVIZZY69
@DAVIZZY69 2 жыл бұрын
@@DaveysWorldFishing thank you so much. It does help is it true that irons with that flat side are not good for fast retreiving because the flat area makes it go side to side insead of just straight up? That you need a same sided jig for that? Hope i explained it well.
@DaveysWorldFishing
@DaveysWorldFishing 2 жыл бұрын
@@DAVIZZY69 I have heard that as well, but haven’t found that to be the case. Some of my most productive YoYo jigs are flat sided. I like the side to side action on the fast vertical retrieve. I’d say experiment with both and see what works best. I prefer the flat sided, but I’m kind of crazy 😜
