I used his printout to zero my PDP, and honestly it works like a charm. The PDP will hit all the way out to 100 no problem. As for some of my other zeroes...recently I just put it where I want and just make a tight group. Like for my LPVO, I zeroed at 50, then pushed out to 100, adjusted, confirmed by shooting a 5 shot group that is about .75-1MOA (3 buggers stacked, with cheap M193).

Zeroing according to an "i qualified as expert in the Navy" guy next to me at the range: -Place target at 7 yards. -Shoot a 12" group -Say the gun is fine since one round hit roughly near the centre -Go on to give someone bad shooting advice and be upset when someone corrects you.

Something to notice on those targets: 1MoA is _well_ within the margin of error for an AR w/ mass produced ammo. Get a *consistent* zero and go with it. Especially if you're just getting close @25y. Better to just get close @50y and do that 1-click tuning @200y where moving an inch per click makes a pronounced shift in PoI *ProTip:* take a picture of your target with your phone and figure out/make your adjustments at the line (NOT downrange).

The problems he was having with windage was because 3 and 5-round groups aren't enough for fine adjustment, only for rough estimate. If you shot a bunch of 3 round groups without changing anything, you would get a bunch of different points of impact estimates. Because of the statistical nature of firearm precision, you need higher round-count groups, like 10 or 20, to get a fine zero.

If you’re still in love, having issues zeroing try boresighting. Remove your rifle upper receiver from the lower receiver, and place the upper in a tripod. Most rangers offer rentals for anywhere from $5-$10 or so. Adjust the tripod until its level. When looking through the chamber end of your upper receiver, lineup the barrel so that the target is center “in” the barrel. From there, start making adjustments to your optic until your dot lines up with a Target. Don’t make adjustments on windage and elevation simultaneously . Start with elevation until you get on or close to on paper. Once you’re there, I just your windage until your dot is Center of target

@@HuckleBerry476 I like to boresight with a laser at 25 yards (the length of my back yard), and then walk it in on paper at the 100 yd range with 2 or 3 rounds. The laser doesn't get you perfectly zeroed but it gets you on paper easily, and it's just calculating MOA difference from POA/POI from there.

For pistol irons, I honestly recommend fiber optic and blacked out rear sights like the Frank Proctor Y Notch Sights or Dawson Precisions Sights. They’re much more slim and won’t cover up the entire target like stock, blocky sights will when you’re shooting at distance.

After mounting a red dot to a pistol, I will adjust the dot to sit on top of the front sight post. That usually gets you close on paper. Then refine the zero from a bag rest. Possibly refine further shooting free hand.

Great video; the illustrations are great for anyone, beginners included. I would add one thing: looking at a ballistic calculator may allow you to increase your zero distance and thus increase your point blank range. I mean point blank in the technical "Napoleonic Era cannon pointe blanc" sense, which essentially means "the maximum distance at which your weapon system is point and click". There are a ton of ballistic calculators; you can google Hornady's and be using it in minutes with zero instruction provided that you know your bullet's mass and BC as well as the muzzle velocity from your gun. You can get trajectory vs sight line in 25yd increments, which allows you to choose a zero range such that the height of the bullet over your sight line will always be below some acceptable level (say 1") while pushing the zero range out to 150 or even 200 yards. A greater zero distance can add 50-100 yards to your point blank range, which can be very helpful if you don't want to dial or don't have a BDC reticle (and both of those solutions take time, training, and are not perfect). Globally a 100 yard zero is a great starting point, but a bit of time on the internet and the use of a 200 yard range can add some extra distance to relatively simple gear. I also greatly prefer 5 shot groups to 3 shots because with 3 shot groups, you're invariably making subjective calls on the center of the group. I believe that in aggregate, you ultimately waste more ammo shooting extra groups while chasing those judgement calls than the extra shots for a smaller number of groups. That's just my opinion, but it has served me well even with heavy recoiling and/or expensive calibers.

I didn't know had to use lock tight... the blue one in specific.. lol after wasting so much ammo found some pins and after a while realized it came off my red dot and iron sight.. went home lock tight them and wasted more ammo re sighting them in... interested in purchasing that lazer sight thing now lol got some good practice though and helped break it in as it's brand new..... also for new guns strip down wipe factory oil off and add ur own oil. Thanks to my uncle I didn't make that mistake but he didn't think I didn't put lock tight on it. Lol also when I upgraded the stock I tried unscrewing it and half way realized it just comes off with the button. And broke the little pin inside and ended up buying a oops kit. Now I have extra parts incase any break and fixed it before shooting again. Was wondering why the spring wasn't staying in place in the stock. Live and learn probably the best way to learn.

@@m4rvinmartian My laser bore sighter gets me on paper at 100 yards but is still 3-5 MOA off from being zeroed. Well, that's my expensive one. The cheaper bore sighters I tried would vary wildly every time I attached it to my rifle, and were only useful to amuse my pets with. In neither case have my bore sighting systems negated my need to confirm zero on paper. Also, different ammunition will display zero shift independent of what a laser suggests, so if you ever try different brands or grain weights, you'll still wanna send a couple rounds downrange.

The 50-200 match the german concept of Zero at GEE (günstigste Einschießentfernung) for hunting purposes. The GEE is published for the different ammo types by manufacturers, for .233 it is around 177m. To achieve that the rifle is zeroed at a 100m with 4cm high POI.

it sort of does; relative to the sightline, at least... But because he conveyed it as the sight-line being pointed down...(I find that to be backwards and a bit confusing) it made it seem the bullet travels straight, which it never does. It immediately starts to drop down, relative to the barrel (gravity). But the barrel isn't pointed level and at the target - it's pointed up. So relative to the earth & sightline, the bullet goes up, first. Just like when you throw a pass. Said another (confusing way) The sightline, being perfectly straight and is what our eyes are looking along, means the barrel is actually pointing up and the bullet comes up to meet the sightline at 100 yards. In relation to where the barrel the bullet isn't rising, but in relation to the sightline, it is.

The tip of the chevron is your aiming point. You shouldn't be able to see the big circle if you're lined up correctly

If your shooting at a circle ⭕️ aim the tip/point of the chevron at either the bottom ring or top ring of the circle. It’s a fine tip so this helps with my eyes.

I'm just a random idiot, but there's a couple of things I would change in the intro: - The round does not "travel a couple of hundred yards and then curve downwards"-- the round drops immediately upon leaving the barrel, just like any other object that's not held up by a solid support structure or aerodynamic lift. Everything once dropped starts accelerating downwards at 9.8m/s^2, including bullets - I would diagram the zero differently: once people understand that the bullet is always dropping, they can see that in order to make bullet go far, it's necessary to angle the bore up. Everyone who's thrown a ball or played the most basic cartoon artillery-type games understands this principle. From there it's much easier to understand what you're doing with the rifle and optic and why, and you can move on to explaining how the height over bore influences the distances between confluence points for any given projectile speed. - I just don't see that explaining everything based on an optical axis that points into the dirt makes any sense. The optical axis should point at the horizon, while the bullet trajectory goes up and down, cause that's how we use the rifle most of the time.
