I've always taken the approach of "I'm training for concealed carry, I'm not a precision shooter. Getting A zone hits as fast as possible from the draw is all I care about," and so that's all I did for all these years. I was never truly proud of my groups and would get the occasional flyer every few range trips. This video was a nice wake-up call for the way I train. Time to sideline the 'Instagram drills' and return to the fundamentals. Quality content, guys.

Lucas, I just finished watching your “How to Shoot” parts 1,2 & 3 and wanted to comment. I am a retired police detective having served in a high crime city in the Northeast for 36 years. I am in my early 70’s’ now and have been carrying a gun everyday for the past 50 years. I train & practice a few times a month at my local gun range with my Glock-19 & AR-15 to keep up my skills and am always looking for ways to improve, especially since age is creeping up on me. I came across your “How to Shoot” video series and was curious about what you would say to new shooters. I have to tell you that your instructions in these videos were absolutely superb and much more comprehensive than anything that I was ever taught during my police academy days in the early 1970’s. You are a true credit to the craft of shooting and I hope you continue your great work in helping others become safe & competent with firearms. My hat is off to you and I’m sure that your parents are very proud of the man you have become. You’ve earned a new subscriber to your channel.

Im a 25 yo guy (grew up and live in the Bay Area of CA) who has always liked guns and supported the 2A, I’ve been a lot more diligent in keeping up w the new or proposed legislation here and federally since the Bruen decision gave us our right to carry back. I submitted my CCW application and have gotten sucked into the world of new guns, attachments, what’s the best vs what’s budget, what’s good enough for my plans etc. I’m a big car guy (Yes I am well aware this state sucks for people w that passion as well) so I know all too well how crazy expensive and time consuming these things can get if you let them. My issue is that I want to be the best representative for the 2A community that I can, which means that I want quality equipment, the most effective training, and the most sound opinions on those things (and much more) that I can find. As any intelligent person should do, I have a few different channels & ways of doing things that I find to be useful and resonate w me the most. Your channel has been a go to for a few different things but recently for these how to shoot videos. I am not a total and complete goofball w a handgun but I am very new to AR’s, however I am always willing to learn more fundamentals and simple drills that really can elevate your ability to put shots on target at various distances. I just find your style to be straightforward, honest, and effective which is something I like quite a bit. Stuff I can easily do when I get home from a long tiring ER shift and my gf is asleep, other stuff I can do to help my fundamentals when I can’t get to the range due to how few and far between the good ones are in this area, etc. It’s really been helping me and eventually I’m going to teach these same things to my gf so she is at least reasonably proficient as well lol. I just want to thank you for the work you are doing and hope you know there are a lot of people you reach positively with your videos and your company. I hope one day I’ll learn well enough and have decent enough equipment that I won’t be embarrassed if I run Into you at an event somewhere. Anyway, thanks for reading all of this if you made it to the end. I have a habit of rambling on for too long, especially right after I get off shift 😂. I have been shooting my whole life and I learned so much from this video. This is such a good base for any level shooter. I would go and hit good groups but I struggled with recoil management and speed especially when trying to do the "Magpul videos" type of shooting. I just figured I just wasn't as good as the shooters I was seeing in the videos but this seems like the secret ingredient to unlocking a whole new level of shooting. I appreciate this content so much.

My older brother got me into guns when I was 18. I became pretty hooked right away and got a AR-15 just like everyone else as my first gun. I soon after got a EDC handgun for when I completed my CCW. Not long after my brother past away. This put guns off for me. I felt like I lost this passion I had for firearms. Now here I am 10-11 years later of not touching the same 2 guns I purchased getting back into actually training to be able to protect my family if needed. I have purchased 2 new guns in the past month and have been to the range almost every weekend. This was all thanks to me discovering your videos and really seeing why we should all be prepared. I wish I could afford some of the products from your site, but for now I will use the "cheap" stuff till I can.

As someone with some of the "Gucci" gear, I actually appreciate it more after getting the "budget" options. Yeah, the $3K laser that my employer issued me is nice, I have a greater appreciation coming from the $800 laser. The $1200 scope I was issued is really nice, but I actually value the differences because I started with the $300 scope, or $130 red dot. I typically get more out of the issued equipment than some of my colleagues, because I know how to use the "lesser quality" items. End of the day, fancy gear makes a shooter look like they can shoot, but cheap gear makes a shooter actually learn to shoot.

@@Cabbagepatch66 Yeah I love quality stuff and always try to buy that way, but having 2 kids and a house it is hard to also buy the best gear and attachments for my firearms. That is why I went with a PSA dagger instead of buying a sig or something more expensive. Gun works and teaching me to shoot better and gives me more money for more ammo and range time compared to spending more on a gun and not being able to shoot it as much.

Because of these videos we can “do it all on our own” lol. But for real T.Rex Arms is putting what seems to me like great education for free; literally just mimic how a pro shooter like Lucas is shooting and you will be a good shooter without going to classes. I have gotten so much better by just practicing this without going to a single class.

Great video! One thing I'll add that I haven't seen anyone else saying is keep your feet parallel, pointed to the target. It feels weird at first, but it prevents your hips from turning while firing rapidly, so your sight picture only moves up and down, which is a lot easier to negate than left-right movement because you just have to manage how much you're leaning into the rifle.

I watched a lot of KZbin when I got my 1st gun. Learned about dry firing and did that for 20-30 minutes a day for a month before I fired my 1st shot.

Highly recommend this vedio, there are some points Lucas has mentioned in the vedio that I strongly agree: Do not Just watch magpul lectures especially when you are a starter, yes magpul is nice and their vids helped me alot back when I started to practice shooting in senior high. But there are many basic and essential techniques that are not mentioned in their vids, like "reconstructing the grip of the pistol after continuos shooting" and "Focous where the dot goes after one shot". There is an old saying goes in China: Only focousing on the stabbing but not the muscle practice will end up in vain. Foundamental works are nessecary in all skill development actually not only in shooting. They are boring and take ton of time but if you want to be a pro, they are unavoidable. Making a living here in China is hard, what is harder is to re-pick up habit of shooting in the life with long-time work and low payment. Lucas and his vids are the main motivation pushing me to go on with shooting. I believe if a decent man pick up a firearm, he acctually is going to proect something like beloved ones, freedom or democracy. My only goal of life for now is to immigrate abroad and get a grip of real firearm, getting away from tyrancy. Lastly I would like to say to Lucas and myself: NIce job and keep on.

it is crazy how many people consider themselves shooters but cannot manage these basics. I would do dynamics shooting events with guys who were tacti-cool, fully kitted out, running whatever trendy modern red dot equipped semiauto handgun was popular that month. Half of them couldn’t hit the targets when they were moving, would drop mags on reloads, and stall completely trying to clear minor failures during the evolutions. I was taught early, check the ego and focus on fundamentals. After a few years away from shooting, I remembered that wisdom and do basic drills once or twice a month at the range.

Coming from someone who’s been shooting for a year or so, I can say that doubling down and focusing on the basic fundamentals and dry firing at home is not wasted time & energy (if you’re learning from it). For younger shooters I recommend listening to what Lucas said at the end, don’t rush to doing the fun crazy stuff but focus on nailing down the fundamentals and everything you do afterwards will build off that

The reason why you’re the best IMO is you are not above giving content to new shooters. The shooting community (especially having a lot of ex military, myself still active at 18 years) is it can be intimidating. You can have the most expensive “cool guy” setup but not knowing how to shoot will expose people. The thing is ITS OK! It’s ok to not be the best shooter! It’s not ok to discourage someone from shooting as long as they’re not abysmally lying about their level/experience or are unsafe to themselves or others with their training methods. In short, your content is amazing. You are investing in a community of civilian shooters who NEED content like this.

Lucas, great video. Do you think it would be more beneficial to teach new shooters the idea of being target focused (i.e. having your eyes focus on the target and what you are aiming at) rather than “finding the dot”? As I started pistol shooting I began learning to “find the dot” and that my goal was to line the dot up visually with the target in the background. Now that I’m getting a little better and taking more information in from different resources, specifically from some of Ben Stoeger’s teachings, it has helped me a lot to consciously focus on looking at the target and train my grip to line that dot up with where my eyes are looking, rather than trying to find the dot and placing it on my target. I know it’s not a huge difference in focus but it did help me to get better groups and more A zones on my drills. Thanks for the video!

My question is this: I'm an American currently living in Hungary where owning a firearm isn't permitted unless for express reasons. I do however want to be prepared for when I take my family home (Stateside) to visit my parents (I've got daughters). Dry fire, dry fire, dry fire. Put a spent casing on top of your new firearm and pull the trigger without dropping the casing. Then on the range, shoot small targets like Post-it notes and push your targets far. Then start folding the Post-it notes to smaller size. When you can hit your target with slow, single fire, start bringing your targets closer then do multiple shots. Do it faster. When you can already hit your target with multiple rapid fire, start shooting and drawing from retention. Then learn to shoot behind barricade, cover, on the ground, etc. You’ll be surprised to learn your shots don’t land exactly where you want to (even with red dots) when you’re lying on your side, etc. I wish somebody told me all this before I spent $$$ on ammo and $$$ before the pandemic. I learned this only when ammo was as precious as gold during Covid.

I work at both an indoor range and a health food store. The flat cardboard box that comes from putting yogurts up and others product I often keep them and put splatter targets on them. Aim small miss small

one thing ill mention as an RSO, no range is gonna let you walk around with a slung rifle. You will be required to clear and bench a rifle before walking anywhere but your shooting bay. You're gonna need to have a private shooting area or be shooting on public land (where theres really no rules besides your local laws) to really need a sling at the range. STILL BUY A SLING. But you very likely will not be using it at the range. So make sure you have an easy way to take it on and off.

While this is true for many ranges, it's not for ALL ranges. I've been to many outdoor public ranges that after renting a bay I can use a rifle with a sling at.

I'm sure this will be covered in one of the next parts (hopefully coming soon), but would love to hear about time spent shooting rifle standing vs prone or in some other externally stabilized position. Pretty hard for me to make precision shots with a red dot standing at 50 yards. But I haven't done much prone/seated shooting at all. Maybe that will improve my standing shots?
