Ramsey, I thought you might like to know a little more about my too many punches education? The things we witness we need to learn from, and share. So many punches can and should be avoided... My trainer Maceo was the trainer of Benny The kid Paret. In the 1960's the U.S. Government almost outlawed Boxing due to the death of Paret. There is a video documentary on YOU TUBE (Ring of Fire) and in the year 2000 Y2K ~Time or Look Magazine Posted the 100 most famous/infamous photo's of the 20th Century. One of the photos was Maceo holding Benny as he laid lifeless in the ring on National T.V. Maceo protected me as he knew I had a serious head injury, I became his assistant! Maceo became a master (me too) at not allowing sparring unless it was the right time, and the right place, for the right reason * * * * * Thanks again my views went up fast after you posted on your page... Sincerely Your Pal Paul

@@PunchProfessor thank you for this knowledge im only 20 so i haven't thought much about the consequences of taking a punch long term, I've only trained in a gym and sparred since I was 17 but I have been training myself since I was 12 that's when I started teaching myself how to shadow box alone and visualize so my 1 2 is on point and I've built on to that from film studying fights and people such as yourself and ramsey dewey and fight tips and other ways. I am always try to learn, I want to be a pro mma fighter since I was 8 that's all I've wanted and still want so any chance to raise my fight IQ and training smartness

PunchProfessor I was at one of those MMA gyms and I got a cut on my eye from sparring with someone punching harder. Afterwards I went to the bathroom to look at the cut and basically stop sparring. The MMA/Boxing Coach asked where I went so I told him about my cut. He said get in their again and spar. I was confused 🤷‍♂️ because from what I was taught you don’t spar with cuts. Yet that was the last month I spent at that gym.

You sound like a good coach. I'm not sure why so many trainers get weirded out or ignore injuries like they dont happen. I went to one gym to practice MMA. My very first class they had me sparring a much more skilled opponent and it left me with a permanent knee injury. I did some boxing rounds with other people from the gym later on and they always went harder than I was comfortable with (and that we agreed to before sparring) Now I'm very particular about who I'm sparring with and I'm not afraid to take less risks in order to protect my health. Some people say that's pussy shit but I think it's being smart. I'm not trying to go pro, I'm trying to box until I'm 80 (or however long) It's cool seeing that viewpoint validated by one of the old heads. Cheers

Just found out that Paulie passed. This video nearly brought tears to my eyes. Aside from the invaluable, and even life-saving, information Paul provided here you can see just how much he cared bout people. I had a very brief career in the sport and worked in gyms where the trainers were not nearly as protective as Paul. He is right on the money about all he says here. When he said he never allowed a guy in the ring with one of his guys without knowing who he was and would not allow brothers to spar I got chills. This was the type of man you send your son to for training and life lessons. RIP Paul,....never be another like you.

Punch doctor, I know you’re exactly correct even though I don’t fight. I come from a totally different sport - track. I love listening to coaches and athletes from other sports talk about concepts because there’s a lot of crossover, even between boxing and track. You say that you never spar brothers, and I’ve seen that on the track with a pair of twin sisters. Whenever one would beat the other in a race there’d be tears, and on easy sessions they’d push each other too hard trying to beat the other twin, completely throwing out the purpose of the session. Last year twin 1 started winning constantly, and twin 2 quit the sport. Both were talented and neither should have quit. You’re also exactly correct about new people to the group or people from outside the group. Whenever we get a new athlete or have one from another squad train with us, we run the reps harder than normal. This is fine for an all out session, but if it’s an easy session or a session where we have to hold a slower pace to get the correct benefit, it can be detrimental. Just like too many hard boxing sessions shorten a boxer’s career and impacts their health, so do too many difficult sessions for a runner, albeit in a less serious way. You’ve given me lots to think about as a future coach and current athlete.

"The damage that's done to fighters in the gym, is far superior to the damage done on fight nights" So many top level coaches and fighters too, freddie roach, Bernard hopkins, so many well known names in the fight game have been saying exactly this for years......and STILL young fighters go to war when sparring in the gym, STILL these pro coaches let their fighters go hard with each other day after day in the gym. It's terrible watching these young fighters lose out on years and years of their career, nevermind quality of life later on down the road, all cause they burn out in gym wars and end up permanently damaged. Punch Professor, I truly hope you read this comment and reply. I have been subscribed to you for a very long time. Saw your videos a very long time ago. I really like the dingle bag, I have never set one up or hit one, but they look like a great tool. The reason I have never set one up is I dont have the "ceiling" to do so. I am wondering how much above my head should the "ceiling" be, and how large of a ceiling or platform is needed? Glad to see your still making videos.

This Bag is only a Large Speed Bag hung on a 10 or 12 inch chain, or rope ~ hanging from a Speed Bag Swivel. It's the way we set the Bag up on the Platform, and our platform is not against the wall like a Speed Bag... Our Platform can be accessed from every direction, all 360 degrees, and that makes it a Dingle Ball Bag*** You can buy the Speed Bag from Title Boxing, for about 40 dollars ask for Alex, or Carlos tell him The Punch Professor sent you ! You will have to build the platform ... My platform is ONE FOOT taller than me* Your Platform should be 1 foot taller than You, or about ! Fantastic video on a deadly-important topic. More and more athletes and trainers are becoming aware of the modern facts and conditions of CTE. But, there are still a lot of trainers and fighters who either don't know, think that they don't care, or think that they know better than modern medical fact. These are great tips, and any trainer or athlete would be wise to take heed of the warnings.

There is a video documentary on YOU TUBE (Ring of Fire) and in the year 2000 Y2K Time Magazine Posted the 100 most famous/infamous photo's of the 20th Century, one photo was Maceo holding Benny as he laid lifeless in the ring on National T.V. @@PunchProfessor This video was really informative and expresses something I often wondered about boxing. I've done some years of boxing as an amateur although I never fought. Even still many of things you talked about occured to me in sparring; many guys don't know what light contact means and don't really seem to know or care about the dangers of this sport(even at an amateur level). If all coaches followed the advice you give, boxing would be a safer sport or at least less dangerous than it needs to be.

@@PunchProfessor it's good to hear people pushing for positive change in the world of fighting. By avoiding injury and working towards a healthy long future for training. You can already see the dynamic had shifted in alot of fighters who live a much healthier lifestyle. Which before in the past the stereotype was that fighters are dumb meat heads, but now alot of fighters are role models for healthy lifestyles, looking after their body and mind. They just like to fight aswell. I follow the timbo sugar show podcast and I've learnt so much about taking care of myself from them, and I don't even jump in the ring. Thanks for the advice. I’m still learning and training with fighters in and out of the gym. It’s tough sometimes because when punches are flying you can still hurt someone even if you’re holding back. Any thoughts about heavier gloves for sparring? I’m not a fan. I suppose the older I’ve gotten I value a more defensive style of boxing. Even if you’re offensive to always have a counter ready or defensive guard up. Always lessen the amount of times hit and direct impact from a punch. You said you suffered a concussive injury? I got a tear in my retina that I had it lasered to fix it. That was from sparring. For beginners sparring is dangerous. Even for experienced fighters sparring can be just as dangerous.

PunchProfessor in my last fight of the finals of the Golden Gloves tournament my opponent intentionally thumbed me in my right eye with his jab. Referee was heavily biased because I was facing the favorite. Every time I rocked Vladimir I got no credit. Meanwhile Vladimir hit my shoulder and I get an eight count. Last one he hit my glove and eye. Partially blocked and the referee got his set up. Not taking anything from Vladimir other than he thumbed me in my eye. Yet not a fair fight.

PunchProfessor the only reason why he got me in the first round with that right hand that lead to that 8 count in the first round was because he thumbed me in my eye with his jab. The other counts were blocked. But what can you do when your fighting the favorite. Not only that but he was actually more skillful than me to begin with. Didn’t need that extra hurdle from him cheating and the referee biased. But what can you do?

Maceo knew about it and he was the best at protecting fighters and knew more about brain injuries than neurosurgeons after the trauma from Benny's death. I met Benny's wife and son when they would stop by the gym every couple years or so to visit Maceo. I had a tussle with Emile Griffith when at a fight show Maceo went over to Emile maybe 10 years after the fight, and introduced himself to the Champ. Griffith's response was (What you want me to fucking cry?) and he push Maceo, and I clocked him...Everyone broke it up. They actually conversed after the tussle and all was well ! It depends on how you feel and what your Goals are. If you are a professional fighter you have to do, what has to be done, because you make an living out of it. Except fight week, where you only do some technical things, you should consider 2-4 sparring Sessions in your fight preparation. If you are an amateur, i would propably do one to two hard sparring sessions a year, because your health and fun in training are most important. In MMA you do really light sparrings with your team mates quite often, which gives you many benefits without big risks. And never spar in a the week before a fight, your body has to be 100% recovered.

Yes. Ali. In boxing circles Ali is known for having the greatest chin in modern boxing. He fought nearly an entire fight with a broken jaw. He nearly died after the ken norton fight. Hadvit not been for ali chin he would never have been champion. Sadly the end result was brain damage. Not Parkinson disease but brain damage with parkinsonism type symptoms. Im dealing with a little bit of the same neurological damage. Because I too had a chin. Back then.

To be honest, I dont do sparring that much, especially since im just doing boxing for general fitness. Why take serious shots to the head if its not gonna do me any good as a person

Risking your health and future for this sport most likely isn‘t worth it as a pro and damn sure isn‘t as a hobby or an ego-uplift. Great wisdom, unfortunately not obtained by most amateur athletes and coaches.
