Prior to this game, the narrative about Tottenham was they risked losing a game like this because Ange is naive, never had a plan B. (And if you think this isn’t the case, then you’re probably kidding to yourself). Relentlessly heard about how Spurs’ high line was going to leave them exposed to a Man United side, who had some of the best xG performances this season, despite the results. So obviously, the narrative must now shift to “it was only Man United”. Because football narratives are overly simplistic and struggle to evolve. All it takes is to challenge the belief that Ange hasn’t changed. Because he quite clearly has: his fullbacks are inverting less (plenty of heat map data to prove this if the eye test fails), he’s now got creative players like Kulu and Maddison in the half spaces rather than said fullbacks. The transition defence is now much better. The set pieces defending is better. The pressing is more coordinated. All the stats prove this vs last season, and getting better as the season goes on. So really: if you want to believe the narrative that Ange is naive and will never adapt (because some half wit pundits keep repeating it), then by all means have at it. But don’t act surprised when the performances and results keep improving.

People ripped Solanke for not making an instant impact. He's no superstar like Haaland or Mbappe, and he doesn't have to be. Ange didn't sign him just for his goal-scoring abilities. It did go to VAR. They backed the decision. He has purposefully struck out at the players leg far away from the ball. He's lucky he didn't hurt him. It was more than just uncontrolled, it was violent. He has slipped, he knows the player is breaking, he purposefully throws his leg out to strike at the attacker with clear intent to bring him down, and he's done it in a way that is uncontrolled and with zero intent of getting the ball. that Van de Ven run coupled with the Twente goal following the marauding run from their I think RB(?) seem to suggest Man Utd players just don't care anymore. You can't have a CB and a RB run past 6-7 players virtually untouched at this level. Either your spacing and shape is so bad there's that much space or you've got players who don't want to fight and are happy to see them waltz past. Not a good look for ETH and Utd.
@mauddib1761
@mauddib1761 Ай бұрын
I think James said it in the video, a large part of playing is mentality and when you have players not chasing back or just letting players waltz through that's when the fans turn. I'm a Spurs fan and someone like Werner is frustrating technically sometimes, but he puts in a shift. I know that seems like a fairly low bar, but when that's combined with everyone working hard to press and chase down you forgive a few poor results here and there. I thought Utd would win today but I think Solanke and Kulusevski's pressing is starting to make me see what the plan is at Spurs more with each game. It's part transitional with the pressing and Solanke and Kulusevski have made a huge difference in the last few games

i hate the word philosophy in football because people just use it as a catch all term for when teams are winning, but ETH is in his 3rd year now and i still have no idea what he’s trying to do. he’s signed a supposed world class GK distributor, 2 progressive passing centre backs and then they just opt to concede possession, not sure if changing manager even helps them but you’d expect some form of progress in 3 years and i can’t really see any from what Ole was trying to do.

First half against palace was the first signs of what it feels like ETH wants to implement, fast and short pass and move, committing bodies forward and not giving the opposition a chance to press as a team, with a high defensive line of course. Today all of that went out the window. It looked like we were purposefully allowing spurs to beat the 'forward press' in the hopes we could win the ball deep and counter spurs' high line (note the inclusion of rashford and garnacho rather than amad). If true, it's worrying ETH doesn't believe in his own 'philosophy', nevermind the players he's picking.

@@glimmer_twin because the internet is stupid. Fact is that ETH hasn't shown a style of play for longer than 40 minutes. Even when united were quite good in his first season they were only good because after losing his first two games ETH opted to play safe counter attacking football for the rest of the season. When United play pragmatic they're normally ok, but it does mean that they have the occasional game where the opposition just steam rolls them and they can't ever escape their own third (look at the liverpool games or this game). However, any time ETH has tried to change up this pragmatism the team look completely lost.

Is the linesman not allowed to help the referee decide decisions? So what if the ref was looking at the linesman. The linesman flagged quickly and the referee straight away got the information needed. Yes Bruno slips, but continues to raise his foot high, with studs shown as the ball has quite clearly got away from him. Why does he need to raise his studs high if the balls gone? Just because the connection is not solid, does not mean it's not a red card. The dangerous intent is there and it was disgusting.

It's just that he made a deliberate movement to take out Maddison after he lost control of the challenge, which kills any argument IMO. Only his left hand was on the ground when he made contact, both his feet were in the air and he seemed to deliberately kick high up the shin... Everyone knows Angeball tries to press high whether home or away, attack attack even when a goal up… Utd started slow, and after the previous draws and pressure you need yet another huge characterful performance. Yet before they’re even tired no one contests Van de Ven and of course Dalot watching Johnson. Getting performances like the FA final is great, but not when thats 1/5 matches, often less. You need a tailored approach for each opponent, so who’s fault is it when the players are lost, and we’ve abandoned half the positives from the new approach this season.

In regards to the first goal, as you pointed out there was only one thing that was going to happen, I can't help but feel Onana could have left his near post a little more to try to intercept the cross. The odds of Micky beating him were basically none, so he was always going to cross it, and I think he could have gambled more on the interception.

Last season when Madison was marked out of the game Spurs didn't have anyone else. Kulu has solved this. Its interesting. It seems Kulu never drops deep he always stays up how ever Maddison drops deep and then makes run from deep. Those two will get a real link going. Spurs now have three players in the middle that can pick a pass. It did get checked and the VAR agreed with the ref.

Martinez for example seems to be diving in relentlessly to the point of recklessness. On the other end of the scale Rashford - you can just tell that he is not happy with the tactical approach. With Ange you can see that the players have bought into the managers vision, just their energy levels alone shows that. They look drilled - the patterns are there to see, the players take care with the ball. With Utd they’re so hurried in everything they do, take sooo many chances. Between Bruno, Garnacho & Rashford, Utd are taking huge chances, gifting the ball away and then leaving them exposed on transition. The rest defence is non existent. ETH has definitely lost the dressing room. Once that happens there’s no way back. His methods simply don’t with this team. Looking at how lethargic Utd seem I doubt that he’s the type that is inspiring the players ala Pep, Klopp, etc. RVN as caretaker until the next big gamble - Nagelsman?

I was watching on TV. The incident did go to VAR, who did not recommend over turning the matter, which is on trend with what we knew var would be doing. In my own opinion on the red, if it isn't given, VAR doesn't over turn. If it is, they won't. It's on that fine margin. Why did Fernandes lift his foot in that way when he fell? As anyone who has played will tell you, that isn't natural. That said, the contact was soft.

Regarding Bruno’s red, it did go to VAR, all referee decisions go to VAR, but it’s only those decisions that the VAR calls into question that requires the on-field referee to review his decision on the screen at the side of the pitch, hence the decision to show a red card went to VAR and the VAR decided the on-field decision was correct.

@MBradleyH
@MBradleyH Ай бұрын
Great analyses but I would give a counter point to the red, as its a soft red but still within the confines of "can be given as a red" Intent - Even with the slip, the follow-up action (kicking out with studs up, as it started with studs up) could be interpreted as an attempt to stop the attacking player dangerously, while he's slipping there no chance of him reaching the ball as Mads has gone past him, he's kicked out to stop the counter. The referee may still issue a red card if they believe the challenge was dangerous enough to warrant a dismissal. I don't think it was fully dangerous enough to serve a red for danger but a yellow, but in when you combines the other two below, you can start to understand why it could be classed as a red if the refs stand by it after an appeal. Endangering an Opponent - Using the refs rule book, if a tackle endangers the safety of an opponent or is carried out with excessive force, it is considered serious foul play, which typically results in a red card. This is the soft side, the slip Bruno still decides to lash out with the follow through kick that did initially have studs up from the angle he was coming from with the slip. There's enough time for him to not go ahead with that swing but he wants to stop the counter. Studs Up - He's making the initial challenge with studs up, it's considered dangerous play. The tackle was reckless with studs showing which runs the risks being sent off. Again I say its light for a red but I believe that's what has been seen by the refs and VAR on review, there's enough tick boxes checked by Bruno in the incident for VAR to stand with the on pitch decision

Kulu is becoming the new Mueller. Not really a forward, or a winger or a mid. They’re a bit different in that Mueller was silkier and a clinical finisher while Kulu is a stronger runner and has a higher defensive work rate. However they’re both playing as a raumdeuter, being able to exploit the spaces, particularly between the lines.

Bruno’s red was fully deserved. The second lunge raising his boot was an obvious attempt to hurt/injure Madison. He had no chance at the ball and raised his leg to try and do more damage with the tackle. If it had landed more square on Madders leg, there would be no conversation to be had.

Said this on the Highlights video, United lost this match long before Bruno was sent off. They were not switching on, every loose ball went to Tottenham meaning you press even longer (so maybe fatigue), but then they switched on after their mistakes, didn't get a goal, then they just got frustrated and lost the game mentally, yellow card after yellow card, till Bruno got the red card. United are mentally weak, they have skill but they play with so little confidence, it's scary. ETH tactics need them to have good ball control and passing (with confidence). They show this against non EPL teams, which is ANNOYING TO Watch. Safe to say I watched till half time and then knew we'd lost. ETH may have imperfect tactics, but moments like Dalot leaving Johnson open and 3 players watching Van Den Ven definitely make him look FAR worse than he is.

Here's the thing about the Red; I'm not saying its an obvious, nailed-on red. But if you back it up a frame or two from your still, you'll see that part of the "studs down" of Bruno's tackled is from the contact with Maddison's knee. His studs *are* up when he lunges, and despite it not being "violent" or "too hard", he goes in knee high, with his studs showing. I'm not saying it's a definite red card, but he can't have too many complaints about it either.
@pauldurdin6163
@pauldurdin6163 Ай бұрын
Bruno had made his mind up to take Maddison out, as he’s been schooled for 45 mins and didn’t like it. Yes the slip probably turned it from a yellow to a red, but boo boo. Don’t set out to foul people and you won’t get red In any case the red meant more lenient refereeing for Man U second half, otherwise there’s zero question that the short arsed thug at centre back would have gone

Followed Ange since Brisbane but not round ball inclined. Seems 75% complete with his group. It's the player ... size and ability to suit the standard hence he took none from Celtic. Reckon he's finding ready made players a bit expensive in EPL...he fancies a bargain. Much is said about his teams turning on after 2 years but I think a realistic extra 3rd year for EPL. Look for fireworks once he gets near 90%. Cheers to all from Oz

It was reckless and dangerous to the rule of law. He was slipping and he lift his leg to stop Maddison, so basically out of control and throwing his leg at opponent to stop them quite cynically. He would have been better off just grabbing him lightly as he was slipping and get a yellow. But he decided to throw leg out recklessly and out of control(in the heat of the moment) and all the commentators have no idea (seriously) that say it should have been a yellow. It wasn't so much that it was a very dangerous tackle, but it could have been (intent), he could have pulled out. The player themself, has no idea, saying he shouldn't have got a red. It's a red everytime I look at it. VAR did review and decided it was a red worthy.

With tottenham, the assessment isnt that they are frustrating that they are missing their chances or being too positive. It is that they are learning. Learning angeball, and you can see the jigsaw pieces coming together gradually. They are creating many chances. They are letting in fewer goals. Ange is about constant improvement through giving it a go. They English "criticism" culture misses the point of the process and learning and building. It is why the English national team, were also so crushed by the public's disappointment - probably true for Man U too. ETH does not seem to be playing a system he has the players for. Horse before the cart. Postecoglu started a system that didnt suit some of their exisitng players, promoted the young guns who could, and is gradully encouraging and bringing in players to suit.

IMHO: Ten Hag tries to coach too much and changes so much each game it unsettles his players. Hence a cup he can get the players to fully study and concentrate and play well but when he tries to implement something different against a team like Tottenham on a regular game they aren't sharp with the new instructions. He needs to concentrate on what Man U are supposed to play like, not how to beat the other team. Build consistency. Van de Ven goes on a run and Johnson instantly starts sprinting to the spot because he knows whats coming next. That takes time to build that trust and sharpness required to win the Prem.

It’s such a bad team, and yet every weekend it feels like your typical ex-utd player is expecting them to suddenly u-turn, win the league. Even reacting to them losing as if it’s on the same level of shock as an Arsenal, city, Liverpool even Villa losing at the moment, and yet in reality them losing is common. I don’t see utd turning it around without selling more of the players in the spine of the team to really clear out the results culture from the past 5years and ten Haag probably has shown he can’t be a motivator to encourage a turn around with the rest

Its a red. Whenever you're out of control of your body *and* hit someone in the knee with your foot, its a red. The fact he slipped is irrelevant, he still raises his foot towards the knee after the slip. Both Maddison and Bruno were lucky that studs didnt make contact.
@jerzee3600
@jerzee3600 Ай бұрын
Agreed he was slipping past mads (out of control) and he stuck his leg out studs up towards maddisons leg. The fact that his heel hit the shin was nothing more than good luck. He was off balance and out of control and chose to throw his studs towards another player. For me it only a red because he slipped as if he had control of his body he wouldn't be endangering the player half as much but knowing he was off balance and out of control he threw his leg studs up in a different direction to the one he was sliding in and was willing to risk endangering the player. So its a red based on that alone. He didn't slip and slide into mads. He was slipping past but decided to make an out of control deliberate foul anyway.
