How Truth Lost Its Meaning In Trump's America | VICE on HBO

In Trump’s America, half the population lives in a world where the “crooked media” tells “fake news” made up of “alternative facts,” while the other half fights to maintain public trust in traditional media.
Much of this stems from the parallel online universe that led up to the 2016 election. Clinton and Trump supporters really don't listen to each other on Twitter, according to an analysis from the Electome project at the MIT Media Lab provided exclusively to VICE News.
“At least on Twitter, we see that there is a separation of where the journalists, and who the journalists are following, and no one is really listening or plugged into this Trump supporter graph.” Eugene Yi, a data-scientists at the lab told VICE News.
Formerly fringe bloggers, like Milo Yiannopolus and Mike Cernovich, seized the golden opportunity to speak directly to Trump supporters and flooded the internet with false information.
The now-infamous data targeting company Cambridge Analytica allegedly used mass amounts of personal information on the internet to manipulate voters, spreading pro-Trump news, no matter the factual evidence, which may have helped win the election for him.
With Trump in office, conservative new media and the mainstream are now at war over who is “fake news,” and a record low of 32 percent of Americans trust the press. And President Trump's personal crusade against the traditional press has only deepened the public divide.
But, "the president doesn't get to decide what the truth is," CNN's Jim Acosta, a common target of Trump's criticisms, told VICE News. VICE's Isobel Yeung meets the people on the frontlines in the battle for truth.

I agree but I think that their attributation of people, like Alex Jones, to the election is somewhat wrong. Republicans are often referred to as 'The silent majority' in America because many don't vocalize their views and see Republicans as a way to keep government small and Hillary not only presented herself as the opposite of that but has a very poor history with anyone outside of heavily-left groups. By her posturing alone she alienated herself from a massive portion of America who went to vote simply to see her *not* get elected. Personally, I see the claim that Alex Jones popularity exists as mainstream sourcing rather than kids seeing him as 'live meme content' shows a poor understanding of American political and social climate on behalf of a reporter writing such a story.

This is how it works: There is a worldview, and there is reality. Those are two fundamental facts. Now sometimes people's worldview coincides with reality. But other times, some people's worldview is disconnected from reality. So. When someone with a particular worldview turns on the TV, and they see a reporter representing the facts, as reality presents them, they have 2 options: 1. Fact check the claims of the reporter, and accept reality. 2. Reject the reporting of reality, thereby rejecting reality. Now here's the fun part. I analogize certain people's tendency towards fake news with the law of thermodynamics. It states that energy systems always want to be at equilibrium, meaning molecules and objects will always move from a state of higher pressure, to a state of lower pressure. -- So when someone watches a news channel that defies their worldview, that leaves their brain in a state of high pressure. So to circumvent that, they need to no longer watch that news segment. You'll see they hop around news segments that continually report facts, facts that defy their worldview, until they find one that reports things that are further disconnected from reality, and lean towards their worldview. Once they land on a news or information source that perfectly links with their perspective on the world, they are at equilibrium. They don't need to go any lower. Now, the further disconnected from reality their worldviews are, the more difficult it is to find reporting that affirms their worldview. This means that when they do finally find that favorable news source, it tends to be so irrational and out there, it cannot make it to the mainstream news stations. This causes the person to believe themselves to be the underdogs, the "silent majority" if you will. They believe themselves to be the enlightened ones being suppressed by the "Mainstream Media:. Now here's the scary part. If you have an increasing amount of people who's worldviews are disconnected from reality, you are going to have an increasing amount of mainstream appeal in the media to their worldviews. It's simply a market being filled. This is why InfoWars and Breitbart, and Milo, and Stefan Molyneaux, and Steven Crowder have become so popular in these past 2 years. They see a lucrative market to be filled by a massive amount of people supporting Donald Trump (irrationally that is) that have had their worldviews disconnected from reality. They have been severely displaced, and were essentially refugees trying to find a place to get their information. This market vacuum sucked them in rapidly, and even made it's way to the biggest Mainstream Media source: Fox News (Sean Hannity, Tucker, Fox and Friends, etc). -- I don't know how to solve this problem, but I do know that if more and more people reconnect their worldviews with reality, the Economist or WSJ would be the most profitable news sources, and not CNN or FOX.
