The only word I can use to describe a Rolex "Pepsi" is gauche. Still, we all have different tastes. If (as I suspect) all Rolex indices are made of white gold, I'll never wear any Rolex. Gold is prohibited for a Muslim man (but it's permissible for women) and it's easy to avoid. I do admire Rolex for restricting supply, and actually, I can see the sense in the snootiness of retailers - they want to know that the watch is going to a gentleman. Unfortunately the flip side of that is the "flipping" phenomenon: pre-owned (let's just call it what it is and say secondhand) selling for a price higher than the brand new retail figure! That's madness.

From the movement to the bracelet, and here's a crazy idea. You don't have to qualify for any of their watches even grand Seiko which in my opinion are better built than a Rolex as they are all handmade

"Rolex shortages are true shortages" - are they made from unobtanium? No. Rolex play the same game as Ferrari - "make on less car than the market wants" They create their own shortages on purpose. Tudor aren't Rolex - I am fairly sure this wont be a revaluation to anyone who subscribes to your channel. What Tudor are is a manufacturer of good quality watches that have a different marketing strategy Rolex - and I am sure a tiny budget in comparison, but they use it smartly, creating demand through reviewers, influencers etc. and then supplying that demand with product in volume - probably every company in the world would see that as sound and smart marketing. "If you get a Tudor you will get hosed" - Mark, maybe take off your Rolex-shaped goggles for a minute and join the real world - most people should buy watches that they love and want to wear, not as a growth investment. If people buy a Rolex (and the tiny % of other brands which appreciate) and put them in a bank vault along with their gold bars, bearer bonds and Fabergé Eggs' that is not watch collecting or hobbying, that is something very different.

Watches are made by craftsmen. You can't just DOUBLE production simply because the demand doubled. How long do you think it takes to train a watchmaker that makes it by hand? Pre-owned Tudor prices in the USA are now equal to or slightly more than new MSRP. In addition, the build quality is equal to a comparable Rolex model. Tudors are certified chronometers and the GMT has a 70 hour power reserve. The only difference is the grade of stainless- 316 vs. 904, and who among my fellow Rolex/Tudor wearers can detect that difference? I own both so believe me when I say the Tudor is a tremendous value and equal in performance to a Rolex.

Buying a premium watch for investment is the first mistake. With the exception of Rolex and some specific models from other brands most watches fall in value on the secondary market. Even buying a Rolex SS Sport at an elevated secondary market price can be disastrous. Your strategy for waiting out the hype of a new watch introduction is generally correct. I have the Tudor GMT. It’s a great watch if you have about a 7 inch wrist or up. Can wear it anywhere, rugged, lots of presence, charm (had a guy compare it to his dads old Rolex GMT), and 200M dive rating. Perfect sun travel (if we can ever do that again) / all round watch. I’m on wait list Rolex GMT to go with my Air King, not sure what I’ll do with the Tudor if I get it, any Tudor sort of fits a nice spot in a higher end collection as a luxury go anywhere / beater. As to value, I never saw it as a collectible, but I’m glad they hold their value way better than most other watches same price point (eg Breitling / Omega).

I think the Pelagoes is one of there best offers next to the BB58 and BB36. I believe the Pelagoes has been a bit slightly overlooked But now that some people are starting to really admire it. I think it's very recently become way more popular and will be seen alot more in the coming future. I love the current Rolex Submariner like many do, but it can be a bit cumbersome and heavy etc for smaller wrists and in general so IMHO the Pelagoes serves a purpose and offers a great alternative to a Sub and may as a whole suit more for an everyday wearer for some . I feel like the square indices and hands give more of a subdued look and casual wear. The Rolex is a perfect everyday watch it is more of a luxury looking feeling tool watch and costs considerably more. The Pelagoes imho has purpose just like any good tool watch and I think it's a winner!

Fairly accurate analysis except that you missed mentioning an important point in my opinion. Tudor watches end up on the grey market not because their previous owners were unhappy or dissatisfied. They end up there because their previous owners got hooked on luxury watches and upgraded. They are entry level luxury watches and nothing gets you motivated to jump into the luxury watch market like a Tudor.

I think you're probably right - however, I see this as more a problem on the consumer side vs. producer. As I'm sure everyone here knows, Tudor was created to be an accessible luxury level watch - in this regard, nearly the anti-Rolex. If someone is buying a Tudor for exclusivity or future market value based on scarcity, they don't understand what Tudor is all about. In fact, if Tudor started restricting supply of their watches, they would be going against the very reason for their creation. I actually really admire this about Tudor. Rolex is starting to become almost ridiculously expensive and an almost exclusively gray market brand. While I own Rolex watches and love their design and quality, I am turned off by their lack of supply to AD's and would never pay gray market prices for their watches. Thanks Marc!

Haven't been in a AD since Thanksgiving but at that time the Pelagos wasn't scare but it wasn't easy to get. They had to order the Blue model and the left hand drive was an order too. Naturally the blue dial black bag was a tough get.

Your point on Tudor’s shortage of supply is right for the U.S., not so much for Europe - with a few exemptions you can get a Tudor at an AD here in Germany when you walk in at any time. I got a Pelagos when it was new even with a discount. The BB58 is said to be only available when you put your name on a waiting list. Waiting time was 2,5 weeks for me in 2019 for the black version, I saw the BB58 blue in the online store of a big AD in early december 2020 - weeks before the hard lockdown was put into effect and ADs had to close. The only model you actually have to wait for is the BB GMT. Tudor seem to have a different strategy in the U.S. and ship less watches over the atlantic.
@BoleDaPole
@BoleDaPole 5 ай бұрын
The strategy is the same as any other company, that's to make as much money as possible. The reason for the shortages in the US is simply due to demand, the US is the richest country in the world therfore there are many more customers than a place like Germany. It's even worse now in Germany after covid coupled with thier war on Russia which has rocked thier economy in a rough way.q

In my mind I immediately replaced Tudor with IPhone every time you said Tudor and it was a similar conversation, especially a few years back with Apple and the long lines for an iPhone launch. I wouldn’t do it then and won’t do it now, paying over retail that is. I paid 3k each for both my Tudors, a GMT and a P01.

I doubt anyone thinks Tudor is a Rolex, however a properly kept Tudor or any good quality watch that for a while has a name for it will rise in value when the model gets discontinued, and they do after 5-15 years, so enjoy your good quality watch for long term since that is why you bought it in the first place. Don't flip like a stock market share. Happy new everyone, enjoy while you have them and be grateful for having them 😊.

Honestly, most people I talk to who own a Tudor (Me included) Have chose it over a Rolex. Rolex feels very dated to me , but Rolex does the same with their watches. Here in Europe you go to an AD and they make you BEG and thats cosidering what I find to be BLOATED prices. Also I cannot speak for the US but here in EUROPE people are still on wait lists for the BB58 it came out in like 2018 (I think) the dark version and you still have to wait for them in the AD. ON the used and Gray market both the Pelagos and BB58 are selling at retail and in some cases even abovde depending where you buy it. Not sure where the concept of them losing their value has come from. I guess considering how disgustingly inflated Rolex is you could compare them but in my oppinion as nice as some Rolexs are they are not worth the price tag and its obvious they over inflate their prices.

The same thing happened with the Timex Q & they have nothing to do with Rolex.

It may be the strategy from Tudor to provide a shortage at the beginning, i said it may be because we have to think in another way that every single new product from different brands and different business, the production line may not be very well to produce it in an acceptable quality. Therefore they need to rectify the production line as well as the suppliers to have the product up to the standard for their customers. That’s why shortage in supply at the beginning. Watch, especially those hand made in house calibre, that even require much much higher quality than we could think of. As the manufacturer needs to ensure the daily tolerance to be within a certain period of seconds, the case and the bracelet must have the same kind of brightness for this batch and the next batch ..... it takes time.

I think your on point for the most part. Currently I have a 5 digit sub no date, a 1958 sub and now a BB58. This all I got. I got the BB58 because I liked it. The other thing is that for the most part I prefer the 316L Steal better. I have a couple of buddies with the new 41mm sub and man that steal they use they say is better when it comes to corrosion but that steal is a scratch magnet. Personally, ai don’t like the size and see that they use Tudor to experiment. Getting their feet wet for a change. Also, Rolex seems to be going more luxury route more so than what are their roots. That is luxury but also toolish. Now that balance is less toolish and more luxury. That’s not for me. I want an everyday carry. The 5 digit sub and BB58 does it for me. I think Tudor is what Rolex used to be and Rolex is going down the Patel route now. Kind of sad but understand it’s a business.

After 2 years at my local Rolex/Tudor AD, the BB58 black dial showed up in the case on a leather strap. There was only one in the case and I jumped on it. The bracelet was not available but the AD did not push me to order it. The watch is awesome and reminds me a lot of my Rolex sub 16610. I think the in-house Tudor movement watches, unlike the ETA Black Bays, will retain value as the brand becomes more popular in the US. Just like Rolex which is now simply not obtainable by an ordinary Joe with cash to spend. Plus, many people (including collectors) actually prefer the BB58 size over the big and bulky new sub (which I also have). So do I. I believe Tudor could overtake Omega in 5-10 years given the Rolex connection. Watchfinder mentioned that the new Tudor movement is manufactured in the Rolex facility. No, its not a Rolex (it’s a lot cheaper) but the Rolex connection means something and adds value to the piece. Time will tell how the story unfolds.

ETA version is the OG Blackbay -smiley think it would retain more value then the fake rivet bracelet bb58 caught up to marketing times of a consumer that views aesthetic over functionality. Smiley were ETA because it was meant to be easily fixed by any watch maker. Tudor original aim at being the common man’s watch. His EDC. Power reserve, spring bar easy release, and any other fancy sport watch idea takes away from the history. Collect watches but respect the idea that the watch was made to be a tool watch that served a purpose.
