Director of the CIA, William Burns, tells Edward Luce, the FT's chief US commentator, how China's President Xi Jinping has been 'unsettled' by the war in Ukraine. Burns also warns FT conference delegates that it would be a mistake to underestimate Ukraine's intelligence capabilities and that Vladimir Putin remains determined to press on with the war. To the Sound Engineer at the conference -- get a dbx DriveRack and dbx RTA-M and ring out the room. This will reduce the ringing/feedback problems you are having. To eliminate any residual ringing, use the parametric EQ to find and eliminate any remaining problem frequencies.

2 questions: why are there NATO missiles in Romania since 2016? Change the perspective: Did Cuba threaten to invade the US in 1962? What happened during the Cuba crisis? Now compare this example to the situation in Eastern Europe and use your mental capacity to try to imagine the Russian perspective.

Absolutely spot on that the biggest challenge is the Rejuvenating China because it is unstoppable! Unfortunately, the continuous using traditional US geopolitical playbook to try to manipulate the trending change in the dynamics of geopolitics especially being demonstrated by this CIA Director of much higher calibre n quality compared to Mike Pompeo, yet without realising the principle of Einstein Relative Theory of Action Reaction.. using Russia - Ukraine Crisis as inference.. since 1991 ..Russian Red lines were ignored but escalated further since 2014.. that resulted a Reactive Aggression by Russia against US led NATO, which is a defunct military alliance against Soviet Union that no longer exist albeit the perception of Putin nationalistic ambition to reinvent Russia dominance in Euro-Asia ( the same rights as US within its American continent with reference to The Bay of Pigs Cuba Crisis in 1960s) n the self cliamed guardian/police for world affairs.. Lol, lesson should be learned by Xi Jinping of China.. .. Not necessary at all... Since more than 800 years ago with the framing of Yellow Peril as a consequential expansion of the Mongol Empire under Ghengis Khan; the Chinese Exclusion Act by Anglo Saxon Imperialists, the Century of Humiliation manifested by the Collective West including Russia n Japan ; the marginalisation of Kuomintang led by Chiang Kai Shek during WWII to allow Russia to control Valdivostok n Japan to control Diaoyu Island ( Senkaku ) as a defeated criminal of WWII ....now the changing narratives about " One China Policy " by deleting from US website profile message about Taiwan as a province of China.; Since 1949, the non stop slander, demonization, embargo, sanction against technology n investment , missles bombing of China Embassy in Yugoslavia in 1999 n stalked a China cargo ship with purported goods to Iran, under unilateral sanction by US.; banned China participation in EU Galeleo Satellite Navigation System n space station programme; trade war that illegally imprison MENG Wanzhou n sanction Huawei globally , the false claim of Xinjiang Genocide , formation of QUAD N AUKUS; political boycott of 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics..etc, etc.. these are all proactive strategic plans to contain China as well as to test China nerve to the limit.. in the name of equitable defence mechanism.. China should n must be prepared for the ultimatum by fortifying its military capabilities n capacity regardless of constant mis n disinformation against China being branded as Wolf Warrior Diplomacy,BRI Debt Trap, COVID Vaccine Diplomacy etc, etc .. Come what may, China goal post is ready to take any unilateral n illegitimate penalty kicks by Western Collectives led by US( after all the experience from The Eight Western Nation inclusive of The Asian Pariah, Japan ..Military invasion after the Opium Wars is sufficient to fortify the Chinese nationalism to face any challenge!) This retired CIA director is just being politically correct to hide the realistic truth that US led Ukraine proxy war is devoid of any moral or ethical rights to win militarily or any geopolitical narratives ! Ukraine is devaststed n EU suffers economically while US gained is the military industrial complex sales of arms, while China gain is lifting of its adrenalin level in preparation for what come may! If the US was an aggressive and expansionist power, here are the countries that right now would be in whole or in part under US rule, either as provinces or territories: Cuba Canada Mexico Panama Germany Japan Greenland Liberia To give you a proper comparison, China's neighbors view China with great caution and hesitancy. China (and Russia) have acted in bullying fashion to those near to them. That is the proper viewpoint to take on this matter. I live in western europe and i know that most people here are very very stubborn and think they know everything better than everyone. The people from my country pride themselves for thinking that they are rational and thats how our president makes decisions. The police, most politcians, employers, doctors etc everyone downplays everything going on in their country or the world because they think they have the most rational view of the world even though theyve never been to most of the countries , that they think they know. The biggest challenge to US is in fact US themselves. It's just sad that with so many domestic problems and division, the instincts have been to go after foreign adversaries and neglect the Americans. From supply chain issues, inflation issues, homelessness to high crime rates, the immediate thing to do wasn't to resolve those matters but to deflect the attention onto the rest of the world. Today is Russia, tomorrow is China, another day, it's going to be Iran or North Korea. Before anyone tries to say, "We could do both at the same time. We could manage domestic problems and world politics at the same time." No, you can't. It's proven that you can't.

The biggest problem (there are several) that the US has currently is a media problem. The crime rate in America is 50% lower than what it was in the 1980's. If the United States did not stand up against Putin or Xi, then literally no western nation would. Europe is wealthy, but its 'retired" on how it acts in the world. Its borderline complacent. If you look back at each empire from America to England, France, Rome, and the Moors - the US is unquestionable the tamest one. If you don't think so then please do some reading and reflect on it.

However, a quick decisive victory in ukraine would have weakened european and US influence and China would love that. This is why china fence sits. They know it's wrong, but they also have a lot to gain if Russia succeeds. To them, the death of other people is a sacrifice they are willing to make for those people, for the possibility of having a more wealthy country, and a more wealthy bank account in the end. China is suffering for their success. The higher they climb financially, the harder the next step is to climb. Especially if each step requires a cultural shift and subsequent backlash as a consequence. It is easier to beat others down than it is to allow others to exist while fairly exceeding their potential.

As to the capability of foretelling how another player is going to act you just have to be a reasonable chess player to tell one possible (the most likely in your opinion of course) outcome and see what happens. And you can even include what effect your "prediction" is going to have on the opponent in the equation to figure out what prediction you going to make. Once it plays out in your predicted fashion your promote your foretelling capabilities and your predictions are becoming even more accurate self-fulfilling prophecies in the future. Partially it's called confirmation bias. Not exactly but a bit like Bill "KNOW IT ALL" Gates predicting a "pandemic" that he had been running exercises for and investing heavily in the "treatment" of said "pandemics".

Ukraine will rebuild after this, and Russia is not going to attack again. The West will continue arming them to the teeth, and they will prepare themselves. One of the most significant lessons for China and for Putin as well, is that contrary to Communist orthodox thinking, which Xi adheres to and which Putin was a pupil of, the Western and democratic societies in general are very capable of sinking their differences and uniting behind a common cause to at least an equal extent and conceivably even to a greater extent than Communist societies. Ukraine is the microcosm and the West in general is the macrocosm. In the end, Western democracies will fight to save their system, based on values including freedom of speech, religious freedom, personal liberty, the rule of law, the right to own private property, to exercise choice, and freedom to work independently of the state. The question for Xi is whether the Chinese people would do the same for the CCP in a similar situation. He could be a little less certain than he was. Remarkably there seems to be a Western brother and sisterhood amongst the Allies which the Chinese could not possibly invoke or emulate. The bond China has with Russia is not even remotely comparable. Another question for Xi and for China is that you may believe that an ally shares your views about someone else but that is not enough for a friendship without limits. You need to be sure that this friend is an asset, and not a liability. It is not at all clear that Putin is the former and not the latter. Quite the opposite it would seem. The fact that Xi did not anticipate this demonstrates that his grasp of at least foreign affairs is not enviable. Xi is doing too many things for show, not because they are well considered.

I completely disagree. The job of a journalist is to ask the questions that the public want to know the answers to, and just because the journalists know why a question isn't going to get an answer doesn't mean their readers/viewers do. If you know a question isn't going to get answered, then there is literally no damage in asking it, but it might make someone realise that there is an issue with the question. It was at worst a waste of time during which he could have asked a more productive question, but it was certainly not irresponsible. You could argue that it is irresponsible for the head of an intelligence agency to turn up to an interview where they might get asked probing questions at all. I think that would be closer to the mark than any question that the journalist could ask.
