How untouchability prevails among Theyyams in Kerala

Theyyam, the ritualistic performance practiced in northern Kerala has long been considered a symbol of secularism as it has been performed by lowered class communities. But in Kasaragod district, this remains an art form where caste discrimination is evident and still practiced. The Tulu Theyyams are not allowed to enter the temple courtyard to perform, while some other community Theyyams are welcomed, strictly based on their caste. The artists allege they are discriminated against based on their caste in other ways too.

Thank you news minute for covering this issue. As a north Keralitie Theyyam , Muthappan always remains a powerful source of emotions. It is all about uppercaste monetizing lowercaste's believes and devotion. Hope all discrimination ends. And the only way to end the discrimination is by appointing people from all castes to be the temple priests

Theyyam seems like they took Bhoota Kola / Nema and tried to fit it into a Hindu temple context. The Tulunadu village that my ancestors come from, never mixes the two. The temple priests do not attend a Kola or Nema. They will at the most handle the Naga rituals (another local tradition). Bhootaradhane has always involved Poojaris (considered SC by law) for the rituals and the dancing oracle is always from certain tribal communities. The latter are the carriers of the oral tradition of Tulu Pardanas. Their memory is an intangible knowledge bank that is in danger of disappearing. They deserve dignity not just for being fellow humans but also patronage for being what the Brahmin community has traditionally been for the North: preservers and disseminators of knowledge.
