I'm 43, so I grew up mostly in the 90's. Even then, VR was very much a part of the public imagination, and I've been fascinated with it since I was a kid. I've been waiting decades for it, and I was really excited when it finally got to the point that we could have it at home, fairly cheap but still decent quality. While I still love and play VR games, though, I've given up on social VR broadly and VR chat specifically. I'm sure it can seem very welcoming and accepting, provided you are among the demographics who's allowed to be into it. But I've found, every time I've tried, that I get completely shut out because of my age. I've been told 'don't make your age a thing and nobody else will', but then I get treated as if I was hiding a dirty secret for what have to be sinister reasons when it's eventually uncovered that I'm not in my 20's or 30's. There seems to be this bizarre assumption that there's no possible reason a guy 'my age' could be into VR except to creep on younger people, and an even more bizarre assumption that once you're past 35 or so, you somehow become technically incompetent. I've been a nerd and a gamer since the late 80's and dreaming of VR almost as long. I know how to operate my own headset. It frustrates me to hear people talk about how open-minded and welcoming the hobby I waited decades for is, only to constantly experience the opposite when I try to engage with it socially.

Thats cool! So hers the thing, its all about the people you are around and the groups you are part of. I get it its harder to make friends as you get older, but its not impossible. We have people who are part of our group who are in their late 30s, in their 50s even 70s, we had a guy who was 80 and it was crazy to be around him. Some people find it cool and would love to hear your stories, some find you "old and boring" witch i think its weird and rude. But i do fully understand where are you coming from, i talked with people that are your age on vrc and most of them would relate to you. BUT! its still possible to have nice and fun time

depends on where u go. I never ask for age my selfe, un less person semed young. I usally insted let them guess me age. But i allways hang around people that i know. Never played in public worlds myself much. Avoid these. My experience of vrc may differ but it requier u to have a comunity from the start to join or friends to join off.

Man if you ever wanna get back on VRc then id absolutely show you the good crew of people that are also in their 30s and 40s, the club scene is where it's at if you wanna meet the older crowd or even the crowd of mid 20s where they don't care what age you are either. I avoid public worlds like the plague

Im 36 myself, and yeah while not being a dude, i experienced my fair share of "so you are basically dead" or "Can i call you mommy" comment besides other. But they usually are the exception. I have to agree it depends a lot where you hang out in vrchat, what worlds, or groups or ppl you surround yourself with. Black Cat is prob the last place you should go to socialize. But hey if you wanna give Vrc another chance i would love to hang out with ya.

I totally agree with not letting it be more than your life. The ironic part is that I’ve experienced so much in VRChat more than I have IRL. I can’t and don’t go out as much but hopping around VRChat makes me feel like I’ve gone to places. I also agree about staying away from groups, but bringing your group of friends into VRChat is also another way to play the game without relying on groups and the tribalism within it. You might meet new people here and there but sticking to with my OG friends help me explore VRChat while knowing to avoid groups. Groups are great for knowing people but it’s not the best place to base your whole personality on. Great vid! Love seeing other people’s experiences of VRC

Good vid! I've been in VR lite (Second Life) since 2008, not the oldest living furry, but at 72 I reckon I'm in the top 10% :). I've been working with computers, well when 80 column cards were your storage device. It is much more than a game to many. For good or for bad, one can get drawn into the machines and lose many hours of life just kicking about. That said, aside of all the bells and whistles, being able to jump into your alter ego has had a great and positive impact on many. There is a certain magic when you can leave the human form and create an image that fits and frees up your head. It has made me a better person. Hell if nothing else I've learned we all can dance...something I was just too self-conscious to do as the old human I am. Now, Second Life lacks the ability to express the subtle facial expressions and fluid movements VRCHAT and other platform can use with multi point tracking, (face tracking, eyes, etc.). SL set out to change, but we got nuthin. So I do hope to get into VRCHAT eventually. Time will tell.

Bro- I got my first quest 2 in 2020- i downloaded VRC because it was free and I only got on a few times, but I've met so many cool friends, some pretty bad people too. But its still cool being able to meet people on the internet that are in different parts of the world because you likely never would have met them. Plus once i got my pc hooked up to it i started getting into world and avatar creation and I'm now looking into going to school for game art and design which either never would have happened or it would have happened much later in my life if I hadn't been exposed to VRC. Anyways loved the video, its nice to hear other peoples experiences with the game :)

Great video, Nik. I know a lot of people who would call their VRChat experience life-changing, mostly for the better. Nice to see someone open to different social groups in VRChat, the furry people vs anime people vibe has always struck me as rather silly.

I can say that on the other side of the spectrum, Second Life created by Linden Labs changed my life as well. Back in 2004 I was a different person as soon as I was introduced to SL it had changed the way I think and see the world. VRChat is something that came later. I was not to invested into VRChat, there as also the Virtual World Battles between SL and VRChat. It took me a long time to warm up to VRChat like a long time. I still play SL but I did find a small thing I can do in VRChat that I enjoy in it at least on my VR Headset. But VRChat wont ever replace SL for me but VRChat will be more an Addon to my existing experience in SL. So I tend to swap between them. Also watching this video you granted me a new perspective to see VRChat in a different light.

every social media and platform has that.... its not only going in vrchat. but we dont let that ruin the platform. if you go off of that rule, then dont use internet at all? No matter where you go..there will always be people like that, its something you CANT stop sadly. But talking about vrchat, this isnt as "known" as peiple think it is, out of all the time i spent playing this game only 1 time did i see a person like that, so id say it shouldnt let it ruin the platform.
