The book went into detail about the protective jinxes on the treasures in the Lestrange vault. The "Gemini Jinx" made any item that was touched spout multiple copies of itself, but the copies were worthless fakes. Thus, it was not violating the laws of magic that prevented gold from being magically increased, because the copies weren't real gold, merely decoys. In addition, there was also a burning spell on both the original treasures and the worthless copies (I don't recall the name of that spell, as it's been several years since I last read the books).

It doesn't break Gamps law as its fake gold, its no different to the leprechaun gold! I also believe it would disappear later so when Bellatrix returned to check on her vault later she would only see one of each item so she could see what was missing! The more interesting question about Gamps law is the quote you used, Hermione said you can duplicate food, so when they stole food from muggle shops why didn't they duplicate that and eat that for days?
@amberbanuelos70538 ай бұрын
That’s the same question I’ve asked myself since my first reading of Deathly Hallows. If they found some food that wasn’t moldy and awful that Ron could stomach (as he seemed to be the pickiest about the food), why not just duplicate it? Even if it’s not as tasty or lost some nutritional value, at least it’s something in their stomachs, and that’s got to be better than no food at all.
@Weathernerd278 ай бұрын
The book never said why you couldn't duplicated food but I'm a science nerd and it kind of makes sense to me. It would be hard to duplicate a steak or salad because these foods contain DNA and animal/plant cells. Animal/plant cells are complex they contain many tiny substructures and thousand maybe a few million genes. Copying something as complex as a animal/plant cell would take god like powers. It would be much easier to duplicate crackers because they are just a mixture of a few different chemicals.

Because with food, part of Gamp's law, you can't conjure something if you don't know where it is. For example, at the first day of school feast, we thought Dumbledore waved his hands and food appeared, when in actuality, he knew the food was in the kitchens below the Great Hall. So all he did was summon it from where he knew it was. I think that Hermione was trying to explain that to Ron, but she was cut off.

@sarahglover32868 ай бұрын
@@piusdoe8984 Partly its what he said in the video, but yes the rest is logic! If we assume that within a few hours of the Trio making their escape the real Bellatrix would have been called to Gringotts to check what they stole, a logical conclusion as we are aware that Voldemort knew fairly quickly, how on Earth would she know they stole the cup if there's a million duplicate ones there!

The book clearly explained that gold had a leprechaun burning/duplicating curse on it and I'm pretty sure they said Gamps law didn't apply to metals. You can copy gold all you want but if wizard tried to pay with fake gold it would be like printing $100 bills on you're home computer, the authorities would immediately know it was fake.

Right, but say the the Lestrange's had a curse on the vault. Say you have 100 dollars actually in there. If Opened by outsiders, then the gold does what Leperchaun gold does. But if it opened by the Lestrange's then you still have that intial $100 dollars waiting for you.

"You can increase the quantity if you've already got some"... doesn't this imply, that multiplication IS possible? And what if wizards suddenly decide the change their currency from gold to cash? Will they suddenly be able to multiply gold, or will they no longer be able to do so for the new money?
@powertomato8 ай бұрын
You can answer that question by economical principles. If you can multiply something of value endlessly, then it becomes worthless very quickly. Conversely if you wanted to create a currency, you'd need something that is not multiplicable. By extrapolating on that, the wizards must have chosen gold as their currency exactly because it cannot be multiplied. Had they chosen anything else, it would be worthless. Spinning it even further, they could indeed create cash, by adding a copy protection, like waving a symbol with thread of gold, which cannot be multiplied. But we created cash because it is easier to handle than coins. If you have a magical wallet to eliminate weight, that's pretty much a non issue.
@Khantia8 ай бұрын
@@powertomato it still doesn't make that much sense... Can you create or multiply useful items, that aren't necessarily gold? A Nimbus 2000 comes to mind, but smaller things, such as time turners may be more convenient for this example. If yes, then wizard economy still goes down the drain. If not, then what can be created or multiplied suddenly becomes EXTREMELY LIMITED, as lots of things can be at least somewhat useful. Personally, for the book I'm writing, I'm just letting anything (including food) be created by magic, and there is no money... for one of the kingdoms that is. For another one - a certain group has a monopoly over magic (and aren't really benevolent with it), so people are still using money :P
@Princess_Celestia_8 ай бұрын
1.) No. Gold can't be duplicated even if you already had some. 2.) Cash can be duplicated but doing so makes it worthless. This is why goverments can't just print money whenever they need it. History shows what that is, every country that tried doing just that found their money worthless. 3.) Duplicating items that aren't gold will effect their value due to the laws of Supply and Demand. Things are only ever valuable because there is a high demand for them but a low supply. Increase the supply, lessen the demand, the value drops. If this wasn't the case then witches and wizards wouldn't need money at all as they could just poof what they needed into existence and if they can do that, there's no need to work. Why work doing something for someone else when your every need and want is already met? As for your own book... its your story, it doesn't need the rules and laws of other fictional works. But if you want it to be a good story, then you need to establish some rules or laws like things conjured with magic can only exist for a limited time before they either vanish or revert back to their original form(s) so as not to flood the economy of that kingdom with worthless stuff.

I don't think it was confirmed that it was part of Gamp's law though? Wasn't it just another one of your amazing theories? Does that mean this is a theory on a theory? Theory-ception? Lol. Great vid Maybe, this may be stupid, gold isn't as rare in the wizarding world. You obviously couldn't duplicate money, that would be forgery. But, I mean, Galleons are described as massive in Goblet of Fire, " ...I had two try to pay me in gold coins the size of hubcaps..." This may have been the man exaggerating, but still, it's worth something. Just some thoughts though. If you go back to medieval Europe, you'd find some countries with gold and silver coins. But those were small. Also in Order of th Phoenix, Hermione made this DA galleons, they had to be big enough to put the message on. But, well, that's just a theory.
