Another interesting aspect about a format with unlimited handrips is that there's actually an argument for not playing all 9 copies in your deck. In the late game they're bad top decks and as they noted here it can actually be surprisingly difficult to kill your opponent, which the handrips don't really contribute to. Of course, if you open a Painful or two this can be mitigated but it's still interesting to see that this format may not be as straightforward as a lot of people assume it to be.

To be somewhat optimal, around 5 is played. Because, as illustrated, a full hand of them is sort of like having a hand of garnets. So painful choice could either be all 5 or if any already played or in hand you toss in your several powerful draw spells.

I think it really shows that well in your series. Not all extremely powerful cards (cards that are banned for long periods) are extremely strong in every format and at 3.

I think Painful helps alleviate some of that but id argue their reliance of the card capped their moves. The first activation of painful is strong and gets you another piece of hand destruction but anything after is a diminishing return. Any mill of a draw spell or a reborn feels especially draining when the inevitable top deck war starts.

I honestly think game 1 cimooo should have given MBT the hand rip cards off the painful, because at that point cimooo’s dark elf was getting ripped regardless and his remaining hand was hand rip cards that are kind of garbage when MBT knows they’re his whole hand

I find it is very interesting; the way to counter the 3 holy trinity of discard is just to use your entire hand and they become useless. You can set them but then you have to worry about Duster. It was actually way better than I've thought.

You already played it in 2003 event, gadget horus, viruses etc, 90% of the time once you get the wincon your opponent is screwed and it's mostly turn 4-5 when you get your wincon, the game is still lightning fast.

If you think about it, outside of Duo, they're all 1 for 1 trade. So using 3 cards to rip out 3 cards isn't as strong as it seems in a format where the opp might top deck a monster while you had none, or pog, or charity.

Honestly, Painful Choice really is Painful, not for the opponent, but for the user. Like, in this Era of Yugioh, to get something good out of it, you need to get rid of an additional 4 good cards. It can be seen in these duels where Cimo and MBT both threw away the ever so feared Hand Destruction Cards just to get a 1. It's uh, not that great? At least, in a format where top decking an out is very possible. Especially when said out can just be a monster with 1200 defense, given the general attack power of most of their monsters.

And even then, they aren't good unless you're Wheeling. Just getting rid of one or two cards in a deck thats usually hypertuned to have lots of recursion and usually deals with the GY isn't good. There's a reason Orzhov colors are the ones who do it, other than Blue.

@@ThatOneWeirdFlex My understanding is that it can depend a lot on the deck that your opponent is playing. But being able to keep your opponent off of a combo or a powerful card for a few turns can still be useful, as is checking your opponent's hand to make sure they don't have anything to stop you before using your best cards. But more importantly for my speculation, I believe that back when these were printed in 2000, MTG cards were also generally weaker. So I don't think there was nearly as much recursion and GY effects. But I'm no expert on MTG, especially old MTG. So I could be misinformed.

I like how they got this agressive about hand ripping specifically because of Exodia nonsense, but after limiting all the pieces this stuff just plain screws over everyone else. Reminds me a lot of hand traps actually, except those do it in reverse, meant for cutting off FTKs and problem boards, and now just used to defend those things and keep people from setting up after knocking down an opponent's sandcastle of disruptions.

I once played a duel against someone using only the cards from the TCG set these cards came from. I decided to only run duo and keep my hand as empty as possible by setting and summoning a lot. In the end my opponent just bricked on hand destruction cards ironically enough. A similar thing happened in these duels I feel.

No it wasn't. You obviously weren't playing at the time. MRL is the third set while MFC - the eighth set - was the first set to have spell cards on release. Also, it wasn't technically WotC at fault. It was Upper Deck trying to trademark Magic Cards as being a YGO thing. Which obviously wasn't going to fly with the producer of another TCG called Magic. If UDE weren't stupid, they would likely still be called magic cards now, just like they still are in the OCG despite MtG existing in those regions too. The less you make up in your head and believe to be reality.

People complain about yugioh cart art not being cool and grotesque monsters anymore. However this format's monsters are all women, and sangan whos just a lil' guy. Even if you include the spell cards you have an angel, another half angel and some generic guards and some peasants. I guess the duo imps who are the closest but even they are lil' guys. Yugioh has been a game about waifus and cute lil' guys since the start!

I think painful choice was actually a hinderence in these games. The first one was usually strong but activating it a second time in a format without recursion feels like throwing cards in the bin just because. I can see an argument that its to weed out some dead draws but this format feels very "swing big bongus to the fences" and having painful mill a pot or reborn feels especially crippling.

Magician of Faith and Monster Reborn exist. Even as old as back then the GY was a resource, and the more you can dig out of the deck the better. That's why Painful Choice was and always WILL BE the most busted card in the game.

What is the point of discarding two spell cards and then adding one back to the hand with Faith when you could just not toss them out in the first place? The moment you resolve Painful Choice* and have 4 spells in your graveyard, tossing more resources is plain stupid. Having more card advantage is way more impactful. Just go back and watch the videos. Both of them discarded A BUNCH of resources and then ran out of cards because of it.

One of those spells in the hand now is potentially worth more than two in the deck later, especially when getting things out of grave is so easy compared to deck. The real reason they ran out of cards is because just hand ripping doesn't close out games and I don't think they fully realized that until game 3.

Turboing painful choice past the first one just doesn't seem good. You take away too many resources and just rely on MoF too much.

Surprisingly there's a lot of thought that needs to go into this format. But probably still not a fun format.
