Please don’t forget how busted Last Will was when it was first released for the next Episode. You were allowed to special summon a monster from your deck for every monster that was sent to the GY during the turn Last Will was activated. That meant that Cannon Soldier + Last Will + any monster on the field was game since you could simply special and tribute Sangan and Witches until you had all 5 pieces or simply burn for game if you had enough monsters in deck to special with Last Will.

@Burger_pants The follow up comments someone made is correct I'm saying cards that let you get rid of some things from the hand weren't as bad because of the fact that they could interact with Exodia ended up being a bit more useful because of getting rid of the hand and all possible pieces in there. Yes later on there were ways to get them back but at the same point it actually ended up helping a player to at least have a chance.

Bonus fun fact is at the time, Sangan and Witch triggering no matter how they were sent to the graveyard included mill as well, which left the strategy of using needle worm/morphing jar to counter the strategy as insufficient as well. @@Kiwyko As Burger_pants alluded to, the original OCG pre-erata text had the special summon trigger every time a monster was destroyed that turn. So, if an opponent had a monster with 1300 or more attack in attack position, you could do an OTK by, on main phase 1 summoning sangan/witch and playing last will, then attacking your opponent's monster, searching for an exodia peace and special summoning sangan/witch. Then attack again, get another piece, summon another sangan/witch, and so on until you have all 5 pieces and win.

A fun fact I learned from the Lost Worlds videos covering that period of yugioh is that Seeker playing exodia FTK was apparently deliberate reflection of what the physical card game was going through at the time, as part of the battle city arc making a stronger effort to follow the rules of the real life game and the normalization of Expert Rules, so, yeah that's absolutely what this is.

@@JohnnyFish971 To be fair, Battle City might have had a rule that every spell card was effectively a hard once per turn since Seeker had two Graceful Charities in his first duel against Joey, but didn't use both in the same turn, so running monsters other than Exodia made sense. Probably the anime's way of adapting the manga's rules for Battle City, which made it so that you could only activate one Spell card from hand per turn.

And here we are! This absolutely heinous format almost KILLED Yu-Gi-Oh in Japan. For players of the OCG, the awful coin-flip dependent format came after the terrible format of Base-Gym in the Pokémon TCG, where games were similarly decided by the opening coin flip thanks to cards like Rocket's Sneak Attack, The Rocket's Trap, and Erika's Jigglypuff. It was like a nightmare players couldn't escape from!

As a quick follow-up comment, this is also why cards like card destruction and morphing jar were good for this format. As there were some of the only ways to try and get the pieces out of player's hands. Because you were limited to the number of pieces you could have and being able to use the effects to get rid of them gave at least a little bit of counter play

My issue is that if you’re going to have the match with this kind of deck where the probable outcome is so lopsided in one player’s favor, then both Cimo and Joseph should be playing it. The result might have been exactly the same, but as demonstrated by the Game 3, you still have to actually draw into the right cards to assemble the pieces so the match then comes down to who can do it twice first, meaning there’s at least a chance for it to go in either direction maintaining the semblance of a match rather than serving as a mere demonstration. If you want to showcase the other deck too, it’s better to do that in a separate episode where the Exodia deck isn’t a factor.

People have issues with long combos because they just dont get to play at all while their opponent is the only one having the chance to play. Same exact thing will happen with this exodia deck. You will not get to play and in turn will be frustrated with this too. The short turn may seem novel at first because its a change of pace from modern yugioh, but once you actually sit around to play, that novelty will fall off really quick and then complaining about the format's toxicity will start.

This reminds me of the GBA game Yugioh 7 trials to glory. The exodia rare hunter existed in an area where there was no banlist so he played 3 copies of everything and oftentimes you just had to play Exodia to have a chance of winning.
