Edit: i use space for a-click and f to stop character, rtxc for fkeys, double tap y to lock/unlock would you believe me if i said that i was trying to make this video for my 100k special but i just got so lazy and enjoyed arena too much? anyways, i obviously have to clickbait for youtube but if i had to be honest - the optimal keybinds are whatever works for you. there are objective standards like distance you have to move for each bind but so long as you arent breaking an insane amount of rules like having ur spells on opposite corners of the keyboard you should be fine. dont nitpick my ass im just trying to balance humor/education/punchiness to retain your attention.

Fantastic example for why lock screen isn't very good btw, will definitely be using that. Have you tried drag scroll (I think that's what it's called) though? Not quite as smooth as wasd but absolutely fantastic control, you keep your mouse close to wherever you need it, and you can keep all of your original keybinds. It can be pretty hard to get used to clicking with both fingers at the same time, but after I got used to it, I've not been able to go back. Will try wasd out for sure though, at the very least, it might help me learn to keep my hands looser and not stuck on the qwert keys.

I like relating this to something LS said in his man vs machine talk, "are you willing to be worse today in order to be better tomorrow?". Implicating that you can be at your peak of 200 anything today with your current set up, but are you willing to restart at 50 anything but with the potential to have a peak of 350 anything in the future. After playing league for 13 years with a set up that limits your ceiling, are you willing to start anew with a set up you're not used to in order to be better in the future? exactly. had a similar problem on a much smaller scale with cs. played the game for over 3k hours at this point and only then did i realize that using 1 key to cycle through grenades gets me killed a lot and is suboptimal, so i swapped to 4 different keys for each grenade which resulted in me sucking even more for the first 100ish hours of using it but after that it became second nature and there would be many instances where if i were cycling for that extra half a second i would be dead. imo this wasd system realistically seems to be better in every way if people were to take their time in order to learn it. the only downside would be that you would have to control your camera and use abilities with the same hand but that can be overcame very easy by simply having faster fingers and considering how many different keybinds you need to use in games like starcraft and fortnite in very short periods of time, using wasd for movement in league even when playing spellcasters like ezreal is very much achievable.

There is also the option to move the camera using a mouse + a keybind (middle mouse by default). It still require extra mouse movement but the cursor will stay in the same place on the screen

Yeah I use the middle mouse button to move the camera. You do have to click and drag several times if you want to look really far away but it's what felt natural for me.

@@KingNidhogg Can you increase the Drag Cam sensitivity? That'll help offset some of the issues with Drag Cam. In any case, yeah, Drag Cam isn't built for Leauge. It's great on RTSs, where half your keyboard is used to issue orders and cast/use abilities and what not, and using WASD for camera movements means you need to rebind everything to make up for the lose of 4 buttons, and generally be a pain. But it's a MOBA, you only have the one unit to control, so WASD Camera is the way to go. Maybe if you're on Dota 2 you wouldn't want WASD Camera as to let you micro minions and summons better, but this is Leauge, Riot took that RTS shit out when making League, so there's substantially less reason to keep with outdated traditional RTS controls outside of preference and comfort. Outdated for League, that is.

I was seriously considering WASD camera movement when I got back into League about a year ago, but backed out after learning it was relatively uncommon. Edge panning is natural to me after many years playing the game previously, but it's such a pain and I'm constantly aware of little gaps in my play when I'm making camera adjustments and trying to fire a skill shot simultaneously. This video convinced me to give a real go at retraining for keyboard camera controls and more efficient key bindings. Hopefully it sticks!

I religiously use attack move to orb walk and not having it binded to a key near my ring finger made it near impossible for me so I switched q to attack move since it's right next to the default attack move key of a. F and E for sums and r,5,6 for items. I haven't tested it much but after making my own little adjustments it's starting to feel a lot more natural and I can see how this would actually really help.

Ive used WASD for camera movement since the start. However its doesnt really take that long to get used to learning the other way around it. I remember when I was playing BF4 and tried 2 very different types of bindings on how to pilot the helicopter. Basically it was like re-learning how to ride a bike but backwards, I managed to do it however in about a week of practice. And then I decided to switch back again so it took me another week to get used to the old settings again. In short, just because you're used to something it doesn't necessarily mean that you can't learn a different approach. Good luck!

I’ve been using this setup for years!! Finally a reliable source to back up my weird play style that I get bullied all the time for. I started playing smite before league so it was always my preference to have my hands resting on the WASD keys. I have one slight variation and that’s I use QEFR for my abilities instead of QERF I see so much of in these comments but it’s still the best way to play for sure!!

I am a drag scroller, which is a type of panning that works while you hold the drag scroll binding, it does require that you turn on the mouse button drag scroll in the game settings menu or else it's unuseable. Drag scroll actually allows you to keep your cursor in the same relative position. I use my side mouse button and I use a flick technique to perform micro adjustments like how you're using the individual scroll keys

Switched to WASD a few years ago when you mentioned it in a video, I had to unbind space bar to fix my camera lock muscle memory. Def would recommend if you are willing to be bad at the game for a few weeks. The biggest downside to me is I hit misclick items when I use shift+1234, so now I use things like tiamat and zhonyas on a mouse button. Also lee sin is a nightmare to play and I sacrifice about 1 flash per week to cold fingers.

I finally decided to swap to these keybinds 2 weeks ago, been mostly a locked camera player because I found moving it with the mouse really difficult. First few days were an awful adjustment period, having to relearn binds + having to learn to play without locked camera. I'm mostly adjusted now and I think my aim at skillshots has definitely improved and playing champions with longer range abilities definitely feels a lot better. My map awareness got better too If you can get past the first few days of playing with it I think it's definitely worth. It doesn't feel good at first, at all, but you will get there.

I have to say I've been playing Rise to Ruins for a while and camera there is controlled in many ways, panning, holding right click and wasd. When comming back to League after a week period of playing Rise, the wasd camera control came to me naturally and i had to spend 2 games adjusting back to League's default camera controls. I managed to do my provisional matches during the 2nd month and ended up in Gold 1 90 lp and I was always against high plat & low emerald players when my peak rank before was Plat 4 0 LP

I ended up with Q on Q, W as 2, E on E and R on R, map WASD, F on F and Summoner spell 2 on 3…. And buttons 1,4,5,6 are items. I remeber the original video a while back and have used something similar now for a while. I absolutely loved it even if everyone else says it's phyco. My only change is that with small fingers, I shifted wasd over to esdf for a bit more room, and made my abilities closer as w, 3, R, and ult is on 4. Then q and t are my summoners. I find these keys easier to reach than the whole number row. And because my pinky struggles with reaching the modifiers, i bound ctrl and alt to the thumb buttons on my mouse to offload the effort. Then pinky can focus on tab for scoreboard, a for advanced champion details (showing range) z to toggle target champions only, and shift for items. Also use alt on the mouse button with esdf(wasd) for viewing allies. Love this setup as it feels more natural than mouse camera control.

I pretty much never have an issue moving my camera with my mouse, BUT I also don't play with very low sensitivity so moving it is a very quick flick. Also 99% of the time my cursor will naturally be next to the edge I want to scroll to since I'm tracking an opponent.

Something I haven't seen other people comment about that I use is semi-locked camera, which is where when the camera is locked (you can still unlock it by pressing one button) your camera will follow your character BUT you can also pan the camera up to a certain distance. The disadvantages are that you still have to play with camera lock so camera leashing when you click on the map etc and that you can only pan so far away from your character before it stops letting you pan out more (idk why this is even a thing) but in exchange you get the lack of mouse movement from locked camera and can still position your camera so that the screen is centered on a fight or a skillshot. I use semi-locked with mouse drag so I never have to move my mouse off my character for camera control either.

About the 3 finger vs 4 finger playing, doesn't it make more sense to play 4 fingers so your pointer isn't overloaded and use alt as your level up modifier so you can hit it with your thumb

You can achieve the WASD setup way easier in my opinion by simply using the "drag scroll" in the camera control section and bind it to some tertiary button on the mouse like MMB or some thumb button. This works pretty well for me in conjunction with a habit of resetting the screen to your position with space every now and then. Benefits are that you don't have to move your mouse too far away from your character ever just to adjust your camera. Now your cursor will move in the direction of the drag (the same happens with the WASD movement as well which btw only is a rebind of the standard direction key bindings) but you only have to account for that and move your cursor back to your character for more controlled close range movement. You can get rid of this behavior by changing another setting. In the "Game" menu section is a radio box called "Mouse button drag scroll". Ticking that box will change the behavior of the "drag scroll" key bind to work slightly differently. It will center your cursor on your character and never go away from him. It'll instead "drag the map" underneath your character so you have to move your mouse in the opposite direction. Try it out and decide which you like best. It basically comes down to preference. As for the DPI settings I will say, coming from an FPS background I totally agree with the notion that lower DPI settings result in more precise mouse cursor placement on the screen once you've gotten used to it. Every time you change it you basically have to retrain your muscle memory to it so I strongly suggest using the same sensitivity for your mouse for everything you do like navigating your OS for instance. Try moving your cursor instantly and directly onto some menu point on your system. Or a file you placed on your desktop. Make the files display in smaller size. Do it again. Always leave mouse sensitivity in your OS at dead center. The algorithm behind the cursor speed uses rounding toward full pixels which completely messes up any kind of precision and it is used as the basis for every game your play. Same goes for any in-game mouse sensitivity adjustments. Leagues standard is 50 Mouse Speed - for precision purposes you should keep it at that. Always deactivate any kind of mouse acceleration or smoothing. Your acceleration and smoothing should come from your dexterity only. If you wanna build a house don't place it on pure sand. With FPS games you have to be able to sometimes aim for a target that is a box of 2 - 3 pixels wide. Such precise aiming is almost never required in a MOBA or basically any real time strategy game (yes MOBAS are basically RTS games - they have been derived from them) as the camera under normal circumstances always keeps the same distance to all the elements of the game (like other champions or minions). Here's an in-game example of how I practiced my aim in League: 1. Put two target dummies as close as it gets next to one another in practice mode. You can basically drop them on top each other the system will place the new one at the closes possible position. 2. While standing still situate your cursor onto your character model. Now simply move your cursor to the exact target dummy you want to hit till it highlights. Then back to your character model. Now target the other target dummy in the same way. Back to your character model. Repeat. The goal here is to consistently have the dummy highlight that you want to hit. Make this second nature. 3. Now do the same but instead of standing still move your champion around. Click where you want to move. Cursor to target dummy. Click where you want to move. Cursor to target dummy. Repeat until second nature. 4. Next is actually attacking the target dummies while moving around. Try to only ever click when your next auto is ready. Until then just move. Do that until it's second nature. Congratulations you've mastered the basic concept of "orb walking" or "attack moving". If you can do it with auto attacks you can do it with skill shots. Only difference is that you have to take into account the time between command and execution of the skill shot. Meaning how long it takes between pushing the button and the skill shot actually hitting its target location. For this I'd recommend getting a friend to join your practice game and make them solely posing as your moving target. Try hitting them consistently whilst they try to dodge everything your throw at them. Then switch roles of aggressor and defender alternatingly.

I press the mousewheel to move camera. Yes you have to move the mouse into the direction you want it to go, but you don't have to drag it to end of your screen to do so. You can have your mouse in the center while moving the camera and there is no need to relearn new keybinds while playing on lower dpi

Since I started playing the game, I've always had my summoner spells on my side mouse buttons. It's so much more efficient since I'd not be using my right thumb for anything else anyway and keeps me from never accidentally flashing or something if I missclick a key on my keyboard.

Don't think I need to lower my dpi, I play on rly low dpi, got used to that from cs, but I will instantly swap to this, I had NO idea how to change the terrible camera movement, so I stuck to a mix between locking cam and unlocking to push when needed, which is just so annoying to me, THANK YOU! Also, I always miss click sums or items when there is more than one active, so not overloading my finger is a good advice^^

Yeah I unlock my screen with my thumb mouse button with 60 camera move speed, it works like a charm very underrated imo. (I play on 1200 DPI currently)

I'm wondering whether it's not making abilities that require holding (like pyke's Q, viego's W, irelia's W) harder to use? You can't really move camera once you start holding them or am I missing something? I still think it's a very interesting way to play the game and I wanna try it but with ASDF to move camera instead of WSAD and leave abilities on their original QWER. Do you think it's also a good way to play and how long does it take to get used to it?

I bound all my keys to the center of the keyboard so I have access to as many binds as possible while also being close to the space bar, I have side buttons on my mouse for modifiers or a-click

I literally have a trackball under my desk so I can control the camera with my foot. That way I don't have to relearn my entire keyboard layout while having full camera control at all times. Since I OTP Ryze I only really need my pointer finger to press E or flash. Middle finger for W or Item, and ring finger for Q.

I actually noticed this after the first 2 years of playing the game (2013). It was a massive undertaking to undo muscle memory from QWER, FG. Binding to WASD and spells to Q E took a lot of effort to become comfortable with.

I am now four weeks in with these new settings. Camera movement was pretty easy to get used to, but rebinding my abilities, a-move, items, sums etc is super hard. I still fail to find my abilities in high intensity moments and often fail flash etc. I'll try to give it another month, maybe two and if it's still hard I'll switch back.

I've been using WASD for my camera since 2011. 1-2-3-4 for abilities. Shift variant is to level up. Ctrl variant is for self. Q/V for ss. I didn't know it was weird key bindings until later on. I was a WoW player before so it felt more natural.

i use 1,2,3,4 for basic abilities (quick casts) Shift + 1,2,3,4 for normal cast R is for ward. q,w,e, shift + q/w/e for items and flash on D plus other sum on F, i use my thumb for those, i have my attack champions only key on the ` (the thing next to 1) I also have attack closest target on C and normal attack move on A) It will seem very complicated to someone, but i am a World of Warcraft player, this is actually really easy for me to navigate.

I never understood the idea of using the pinky finger for Q as it is the most used button and an uncomfortable finger to press it with, so I always kept my pinky on shift, and used E and R with the pointer, and also bound the F keys to ZXCV and use drag scroll for camera with the option that leaves the mouse in the same spot in the map but the camera moves around it.

what do you do if you have your fingers on wasd and get ganked and need to use an ability? isn't it easy to mess it up? doesn't it introduce more delay to your reaction?

instead of wasd would it not be more appropreicate to move the keys over more to something like a esdf or even more like a rdfg as you have more keys to use on both left and right hand side of you keyboard hand? also what makes wasd better for moving the camera then qwer moving back in shooters like cs2 and valorant isnt as much as an option then compared to moving camera down on league. sure it could take longer to learn but you would always have the ability to move any camera direction in an instant instead of wasting time moving fingers first to the key then moving. I also think the speed in which one can move and adjust the camera at a fine level is the same difference as controller anlog stick and mouse for shooters.

locked camera/camera control in general is probably my biggest pet peeve when I watch others play it's like do you know how much info you're losing out on constantly - I play completely unlocked and only tap spacebar to bring me back to my location. hurts my brain to keep it locked for any more than a few seconds. also lower DPI is based I think I'm around 1200 or so (since I still move camera with mouse, need a bit more speed to not grief myself). my wrists would be doomed if I didn't lower it a while back my personal keybind rule (for keyboard AND controller) is to minimize how much my hands have to deviate from their main position. so I bought a 12 button mouse early in my league career, rebinded the first four numbers to like opkl or something idk just buttons I'd never press lol, then used 1234 to do f-keys, ain't no way my tiny hands can stretch to the actual f-keys LOL. I binded all of my items, trinket, quick level ups, shop access, warded ping, and dance (most important) to those buttons so I'd always keep my left hand around the QWER area, save for the occasional ctrl or shift press (like 5 = trinket but ctrl + 5 = shop). my friends have often told me I'm insane for "using an MMO mouse for league" but I had no clue that's the "intended" use of one till years later LMAO. also upped my camera mouse speed a bit so I could have snappier movements but without killing my wrist in the process whoops sorry long as hell comment, passionate about this stuff haha. people should just not be afraid to try things and go outside the default or norm, that's how you learn what is optimal for you. banger video as always

There's a fourth way to move the camera: with the wheel button (or MB3), I find that better than going to the edges (for obvious reasons) and also better than locking the camera (also for obvious reasons). I will try the WASD. Thanks!

I dont play LoL i play Dota but was thinking of giving LoL another try. I AM SOOOOOO HAPPY you are aggressive about telling people to shut the hell up about "wtf you mean you use wasd to move cam? thats what trash players do" I have the same thought you do about i can quickly and smoothly move my cam where i need to be without mad dashing my fk mouse all over my screen and miss clicking random shit on skill shots. I also play with low DPI from my CSGO era and i cant do the 2000 DPI moving sht around. i like that you showed how much it takes to move the mouse from mid screen to the side. Its nice to know there is someone else out here in the toxic world that understands my frustration with people saying things should only be 1 way because "thats how pros do it"

yes on yuumi its probably one of the best champs to use it on. You def dont wanna play on locked cam on yuumi bc your camera will move based on the person you're on which is completely out of your control and unpredictable, and you need your mouse to aim your Q, so using keyboard to move cam is optimal

My hand was actually always tired of going back and forth when moving camera and having to CS at the same time. After this video I jumped into Practice Tool and changed camera to WSAD and spells to 1-4 - couldn't get used to them so went back to defaults. Now moving camera with mouse feels SOOO unnatural, so im gonna stick with WSAD but now I have to find comfortable replacement keys for spells. 10 years of playing stock settings (tho with unlocked cam and quickcast) went down the drain in 30 seconds xD

I played with a wasd set up during my entire time playing league. All of it because when I started playing I didn't have a mouse for around 6 months and after that I was already used to moving my camera with the keyboard and using every spell on quick cast.

This seems to be inferior when it comes to quick movements tho. You‘ll always be behind when wanting to change the camera angle in a fight as you have to readjust your hands. Also, how do you for example flash while charging up q on vi?

You can also use click to drag the camera, which is what a lot of pro DotA players do, and I find the easiest way to move the camera, especially if I'm trying to keep my camera on a specific champ.

Have you thought about moving your hand 1 slot to the right? So esdf for camera movement? This will allow you to have more keys available for your pinky and ring fingers

Although I think it’ll take some time to get down I can definitely see how this would make my game play way better because I honestly hate moving around the camera with my mouse all the time and I know it’s not efficient at all
