Traditional job interviews are stressful interrogations that can often exclude marginalized populations. Here's how psychologist and entrepreneur Gil Winch says we can rethink hiring, training and onboarding to allow people to show their true potential.
The Way We Work is a TED original video series where leaders and thinkers offer practical wisdom and insight into how we can adapt and thrive amid changing workplace conventions.

@@hmax1591 not to mention that minimum wage used to keep up with productivity and inflation and it hasn't in over 30 yrs it actually should be 20 but 15 is a damn good start. These people have to work 2 to 3 jobs because they cant get enough hours because no one wants to pay over time.. so we have to force their hand. Also waiters and delivery people make 2.75 an HR so please tip them well.

There is a lot to fix. I've been in many work environments and I've seen colleagues making fun of people's CVs and unsuccessful candidates. I also feel that HR departments have an unhealthy culture of gossip and using employees circumstances against them when it comes to salary. If you can't respect candidates, you're not worth working for.

The pandemic has made the hiring process at my job so much worse than it already is. We've had many no-shows and fake applications so that people can continue collecting unemployment, even those saying they are in the process of collecting unemployment while at a job interview! I'm the HR manager but my boss (the CEO) literally neuters me when it comes to hiring our skilled and administrative positions. We've had positions open for years because he thinks there's a literal perfect candidate that he'll discover in one of our dozens upon dozens of interviews, while also faulting candidates for anything and everything. The people he choose quit within a week or two. The people I hire, stay on for years. Micromanagers suck.

We can't move on to your video until we address THAT issue first. Yes, I get it. I already do this. Since I hire data scientists and machine learning engineers being able to respond well under pressure is not critical (especially since operating under pressure is usually a sign of bad management not poor skill). The only problem with my method is that it takes about 3 interviews ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 hours (although that has break time factored in).

How about instead of an interview you see if I can do the job? sure sometimes you have to be trained but why not put me with a trainer and see if I pick it up.. If not no harm and I atleast got a days pay. They always ask the same damn questions anyway... "Tell me about a time a customer was rude . how did you handle it what did you learn from this experience.?" *"well I used to be a manager, id be nice and try to understand why they were rude. I didnt really learn anything except some people are rude because they feel entitled."*

You can't just allow someone to start working without signing a contract. And it seems like you don't understand there are sometimes literally like 100 options and only the best people get chosen. I feel like questions could be better, the environment could be more relaxed. But at the end of the day you still need to prove yourself. People need to stop blaming others and realize the only reason they weren't hired is because they themselves weren't good enough or because them boss is stupid. Had a friend that followed a course in napoli for pizza making, he had his own wood fired pizza oven and had a passion. Then wasn't hired because he (17 years old) has no experience working in restaurants. But he was eager to learn.

I AGREE...also, we have alot of buddying up ....as I call it....fixing the slots as you will....the slots being jobs open in businesses.....we have friends and families getting jobs then bringing in there familiars....if you get hired over them ....the rest of the crew harasses and undermines your work ....I've had said people put god knows what in my coffee....so I get ill....try to pull one over and suck up to the boss by telling lies and saying things that destroyed my reputation.....even vandalize my vehicle ....I had a person tell me I wasnt wanted at my job because I made the others look bad....because I worked too hard... eventually had to quit from the emotional toxicity ..this went on and on....I have ten letters of recommendations...more if I wanted....my work was always my passion so these people didn't just ruin my life but made the companies I worked for close after a while....its a sad thing to see....but if you report bad behavior in the work enviroment....these people will never leave you alone...even if you quit... They will send others to constantly mess with you......I'm thinking its gang related.....and if you can't stop this ....your words dont matter...because no business will survive....nobody is safe .....😔

This works up to a point but then you end up with the issue where the candidate has spent hours preparing themselves for this high pressure interview to be totally thrown off ballance by it being calm and you wanting to talk about hobbies and to role play instead. Try to manage expectations from the start to help interviewees know what to expect too.

Every company should have a shrink or (in better words) a performance enhancer/coach to select the best candidates for the job. This performance enhancer would essentially act as the shrink of the company, someone to go to when things are not working or to make your work ethic better. In a perfect work environment there should always be a "Wendy Rhoades from the tv show Billions", because i feel like in so many jobs, people lose hope and work ethic, and then that turns into a disaster waiting to happen. It has happened to me in so many dead end jobs. The only people i were able to communicate with were my co workers, and they would rat me out to the manager for complaining about my problems at work...and then i'd go home and drink to escape the negative workplace that evening, which i assume everyone working there did the same. But if the company had a performance coach, then i really think people would start getting problems off of their chests, and be able to communicate better with other coworkers in a positive way....this is essentially what K-12 has for many students who cannot verbally or physically express themselves to other students, and the school steps in to help teach the student how to participate in a positive way. If performance coaches were to be implemented in large corporations and work down the chain, i feel as if society as a whole would change to become more positive, rather than lost and not understanding what their purpose is, leading to more anger, humiliation isolation, and envy towards peers.

Remove the hiring process completely, that is the only way to make it better. Humans require the freedom to move around and try different things.
