Hi Jasmine..... When cleaning the flue - one tip would be to tie a string to the brush, then drop the string down the flue..... This will allow you to pull all the soot down into the fire box.... Or you could do it the other way..... drop the string down the flue, then tie it brush and pull up and out the top of the flue...... Either way, do this before you vacuum out the firebox lol - spotted the deliberate mistake !!!

Best thing I've found for cleaning the glass on my wood burner (land-based!) is scrunched up newspaper, moistened and dipped in some ash. That removes built up crud really well. Just need a to use a damp cloth to remove the residue afterwards.

i do that too ! this was much easier than that tbh

Ahoy& Merrie Christmas to all those aboard the ‘ This Narrowboat Adventure (TNA). I agree with Ms. Lawson, the gritty end of a paper towel, works wonders. Apply after your fire has cooled, especially the glass, and ¡violà! Relight n enjoy a clean , & clear fire!

We have a glass front(clear ceramic) on or wood burning stove at home and when we asked the dealer what they sold to clean the glass they said we can sell you a cleaner but nothing works better than taking some of the ash from the stove and mixing it with water to form a paste, dip in a damp cloth and use this compound to clean the glass. Works great and it's free! Something to think about.

Interesting vlog J. Intrigued as to renewing rope to inside of chimney boss tho'. No need to have rope to inside. Simply work from outside ( a dry day naturally 😁). A lot easier to get to. Dig out the old rope and sealer or cement between top of flue pipe and collar. Vacuum up crud, wipe off. Chimney will probably move a little bit so wedge with bits of kindling wood to keep as central as possible. Apply the squidgy black heat proof/resistant sealant around inside of collar and around flue. Press in suitably sized rope and tamp down with end of bit of kindling. Apply more sealant to over rope and build up so rope encapsulated in sealant. Smooth off. Allow to cure. Advantage of using flexible sealant compared to fire cement is it won't crack (and easily smoothed off). The idea is merely to hold flue in position and keep moisture running down flue. Most important is keeping exhaust gases from entering boat. If you have an internal rope sealing "ring" as well as then any condensate/water can be trapped and cause rusting to flue over time. Glass; if it's not cracked but just crazed then don't bother replacing, unless of course you "must " see flames. Another way of cleaning glass is to use a wad of very damp newspaper and simply scrub away deposits. The soot particles act as a sort of "cream" cleaner. You never know if the propellant used in pressurised spray cand are "properly" green. Black sooty marks to inside merely indicates the fire not hot enough ... easily fixed by opening air intakes and burning off until glass clean again. Excellent wheeze with polythene sheet, face mask and open door. The chemicals wafting off the heat proof paint as it dried/cures are most definitely not to be inhaled. Those magnetic temperature gauges give a minimum best temperature for burning fuel. If too "cold" when burning wood the gasses condense on inside of flue at top end and chimney and form combustible coating. Flue gets too hot and danger of fire caused by cruddy stuff (from wood not burning hot enough). Lastly, might be worth mentioning that a lot of areas contain smoke control zones and wood burning, repeat wood burning, stoves "should" be DEFRA approved. These stoves have an extra tertiary burning space to firmer reduce the particulates. Google if arsed. Fuel "should" be seasoned wood. Multifuel stoves should be burning smokeless coal nuggets and dry wood. Burning paper with kindling only. It may be CRT are obliged to add another section to BSS to comply with Local Authority regs ref smoke and particulate emissions. Basically an excellent notion by J to keep stove as clean as.
@ThisNarrowboatAdventure4 жыл бұрын
I did mention smoke control fuel in how to light a fire video I think, this was about maintenance, not fuels. we will do the rest of the job at some point....
@t1n44444 жыл бұрын
@@ThisNarrowboatAdventure Fuels predicate the degree of maintenance tho'. The cleaner the fuels, as in low sulphur, smokeless nuggets or less than 20% moisture content timbers then the less maintenance you end up doing (keeping flue and chimney swept and internal fire ropes, say). I gather next year the law ref clean air/reduction in air pollution will mandate the use of permitted fuels (no coal or even damp timbers) and advise regular maintenance.

I would think it this would work the same on your stove as on the old wood stove I had... to clean the glass, dip the edge of a damp rag in the soot and scrub the glass with the sooty corner of the rag... it’s just enough grit to get the glass clean but not enough to scratch... works amazingly well 🙂 The stove looks great by the way 👍

If you're planning on replacing the glass, you should look into getting a buffing adapter for a cordless drill and hitting it with some glass polishing compound. Might work, and it would be a lot cheaper, I'd imagine.

Some people are replacing their stoves with diesel heaters because they are cleaner and more cost efficient.
@ThisNarrowboatAdventure5 жыл бұрын
Im not sure i agree that they are cleaner, but since i have both i can say that the multifule makes the boat warmer and doesn't require electricity
@t1n44445 жыл бұрын
Hmm, now when you say cost efficient I take it you mean as in the "running" of a diesel stove? Quite correct and the stoves can be run on different oils, not just diesel. Central heating oil or kerosene or paraffin will be suitable. Central heating oil was around 50p per litre in Q1 2019. However, if you factor in the cost of buying a stove and then the cost of installing said stove and then the engineering required to comply with current BSS regs, or having a separate fuel tank and possibly a day tank, then the pay back time may be quite a bit longer than you might have hoped for even when burning the cheaper alternative fuels. If, as an example against a diesel stove, we consider ambient temperature then anything lower than neg 9C might mean the stove won't work because the fuel might wax up. The cloud point is higher than the wax point so you might get issues there too if the fuel is passing through a filter to the exterior of a boat. On the other hand a solid fuel stove just "works". Basically you can burn just about anything and keep warm, and heat up food and boil a kettle. (I say "can" but you would still be expected to comply with smokeless zones.) It is prudent to give yourself as many options to heat a boat as possible and having a diesel (or LPG) c/h boiler for both water and space heating, plus a solid fuel stove, plus an immersion heater ( if on shore power) and lastly the "waste heat" from the diesel engine just about covers it. There are a couple of lady boaters who do their own vlog and at this very moment are engaged in the planning stages ref having a diesel stove installed. (You may be sure that they have received plenty of "advice" from both sides do to speak ...) It seems that merely finding an installer, for marine use, is not that simple. As mentioned earlier complying with BSS regs is dependent on how your own particular boat is constructed. Some installs may be easy and some definitely not. If interested have a squint at the BSS regs, sections 2 and 8. For example, protection from leaking fuel lines is but one facet (of several) and the BSS inspector guy will have to satisfy himself that fuel and fuel vapours cannot enter the bilges, say. Another example is that all fuel lines must be easily inspected and have isolator valves easily reached, for obvious reasons. In short you may end up spending a "lot" of money to save "some" money. Stretching a point it may make your boat less attractive to future buyers if they don't buy into having diesel oil/fuel oil lines running throughout the living space.
