A folding garden cart, preferable one with air tires and the ability to mount two tires where there is one and get extension rods to give yourself more mechanical advantage or to make the handle wide so you and your partner can share the load easier

For a manual push or pull trolley/sack truck. You need chunky tyres that are partly let down... hard tyres are a nightmare on rough paths... In the past I installed multi fuel stoves and used trolleys like that all the time with no issues, chunky nearly flat tyres will also go up steps..... I live in a wee cottage in North of Scotland and have oil and a multi fuel stove... all self installed.... bye and keep warm 😉

Hello Jasmin. From what I've seen on your channel, as well as on Cruising the Cut, it looks like the towpaths are mostly gravel, which would be very wearing on solid wheels, so a cart or trolley with air-filled tires would last much longer. I imagine that space is at a premium on a narrowboat, but I looked online and the DIY stores in the UK seem to have a selection of hand dollies and garden carts with air-filled tires, with a wide range of prices.

I use this one with a bread delivering basket strapped to it, that is equivalent to three standard Swedish paper shopping bags. I have moved every thing with it, 6 feet tall freezers, full size cookers and on it goes. www.clasohlson.com/se/Transportkärra/p/Pr407346000 . My apologies for the Swedish link (wish I hope works), but I don't know any UK company names.

Hi - If both your bike and trailer have pneumatic Schrader valve tyres you could consider putting some tyre sealant (Slime or similar) in them to help protect against broken glass and canal side thorns and rubbish - or carry something like a Zefal repair spray - might save a loaded bike push.

As mentioned in other comments the towpaths are mostly gravel. Gravel and other rough surfaces will be hard on the standard PVC or ABS plastic wheels you find on most trollies. The trollies you show at 1:08 and 1:10 in the video clearly have failed from the rough surface. Air filled tires or a solid rubber tire like on a forklift will hold up much better. Try looking for an industrial solid rubber tired caster, hospital casters would probably work well too. Might even find a set of rubber tired wheels to replace the worn out wheels. Both should provide an easy bolt on replacement with no more work than maybe drilling a few new holes. Getting a bigger wheel will certainly make the trip down the rough path easier even if it does take up a bit more of the precious space on the boat.

Ah, yes, the joys of non-motorized transport. While we don't live on a narrowboat (we don't have them on this side of the planet), we do live with the reality of shopping and moving things without hurting ourselves. I used to have one of the folding trolleys for delivering mail, and it worked well. The trolley retired with me, and lived on a couple of years of lighter service. We have had a couple of other iterations of the folding kind, and they seem alright for indoor work and to-and-from the car, but on rough sidewalks, they quickly disintegrate. The worst aspect of that type is what I call Messerschmidt landing gear. If you can picture a WW II Bf-109, you know what I mean. We are lucky enough to live near a liquidator that usually has both trolleys, and replacement wheels. Yes, we tried that route, too! Our current model is a plastic flat-bed type with the folding handle, much as the one you showed. It is pretty good, but fairly rigid, and therefore noisy on hard surfaces. I anticipate that I will replace the wheels, but also pad the frame, so that there is a bit of suspension. This should make wheel wear a bit less, and dampen the sound. Most likely I will use small scraps of high density underflooring (the kind you use under engineered wood floors). Actual springs mign work too, but the more moving parts you have, the more things can go wrong. Really enjoy your vlogs. Trying to catch up, and might have succeeded!

If you're using a trolley to empty your toilet, I can guess you're getting enough fiber. Good for you. :) As others have mentioned, those gravel paths play havoc with cheap trolley wheels. If you want you can try to buy air-filled wheels and retrofit them to your old broken trolley. Otherwise if you don't get the air filled wheels you are wasting money. Bigger air-filled wheels will also help you go over all kinds of terrain like grass also. At 2:30 I see you got one with larger bike-like wheels filled with air. That should work much better and you won't be wasting so much money on cheapo trolleys.

I'm looking to build my own trolley soon. Need to shift some full sized 18mm marine ply sheets down the towpath as well as a lot of steel plate for overplating. It's either that or find a road that meets the towpath with a space to moor and a company that will deliver to a none house address... Boatlife eh?? ;-)

@@ThisNarrowboatAdventure Double up with two pneumatic wheelbarrow tyres perhaps? Screwfix might be somewhere to try; they have a fair range ... £10 to £15 per unit. Plastic wheels. They also do a yellow puncture proof type. Mount as free wheeling on the axle, as in suitable diameter threaded rod plus washers and nuts. Possibly nylocs so as to avoid using locknuts. Scrounge some copper pipe as axle carrier and spacers. Job done.

Hi Jasmine, Larger diameter inflatable wheels should wear longer, put less stress on the bearings, and should pull more easily on the tow path. Furthermore, inflatable wheels are usually replaceable when they reach their end of life.

Ok, this may not be helpful but it is an outside the box possibility. I have heard rural Asian culture described as using two sticks to pick up one grain of rice and one stick to pick up two buckets. Anyway, if wheels will not last, perhaps a carrying yoke will. Compost may be the way to solve this, some boaters love them evidently.

Forget trolleys J, they are so yesterday! Might I suggest turning your back on a trolley for moving the night soil and invest in a composting toilet? "Composting" isn't really the correct term ... "urine separating" is more accurate. Wee can go under a hedge, preferably diluted, and solids into the general waste in the same way as disposable nappies. Disclaimer: I don't get a bean for mentioning this product range but have a squint at "COMPOOST" (double "o" intended). From a DIY kit to a fully operational unit with some bells and whistles ... not literally mind ... In my not so humble opinion a urine separating loo is definitely worth having ... finding a working Elsan is no longer an issue. Might be a two parter vlog doing the construction thing. The installation of a DIY kit can be as complex as you want ... could even build in the style after Pugin ... in fact as I recall one of Blair's old cronies had his thunderbox built after said Pugin. Not sure if you'd be in good company, but still ...

@@ThisNarrowboatAdventure Aha! Must have missed that one. Anyway, allow me to correct your supposition on the composting thing. It is the wee which is the good part, ie, the liquids not the solids. Plenty of tech stuff online, and if you arsed (groan) some very, very tech info on the reycling of human waste liquids. By the sound of it you may have been misled by those who haven't done, or didn't understand their research, which is a shame because the amount of research by "green organisations" is almost epic. Human wee, collectively, amounts to tons and tons of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium (plus trace elements) being produced daily across the planet. In fact human (matured) urine is probably one of the most useful of the recyclables in that it can be diluted very easily and applied directly to food crops. The dilution ratio can be as much as 10:1 which means wee goes a very long way. Some farmers are using it as I type. Human solids not such a good idea as can contain human pathogens and the advice is to use on flowers, not food crops ... although some authorities claim otherwise. Days and days of reading if you have the time and then you can correct the folks who gave you duff advice in the first place. Ref the landfill thing, methane (as fuel) can be extracted from landfill sites until they become uneconomic and sadly the remaining methane does end up as one of the "worst" greenhouses gases. In comparison CO2 is not such a concern. Again, plenty of info online ref methane in the atmosphere. It occurs to me that you are quite into rooftop gardening so nothing to stop you experimenting with your own homebrew liquid fertilizer, suitably diluted. In fact I recall that KZbin has a fair few vlogs on this topic. Nothing to stop you watching one or two.

@t1n4444 4 жыл бұрын
Yes it's illegal alright. Not just because of sanitary contamination issues but the wee is just what the aquaflora wants. The weed grows like mad and wraps around the prop ... it is a right bugger having to stop every 20 mins to clear said prop. It has been suggested that during "lockdown" the London waterways were regarded as a giant "Elsan point". In fact there is another London based lady blogger who has done a vlog on attempting to navigate the weed infested waterways. There are a lot of comments ref this dumping of human waste in said urban waterways. Urban waterways not at all unique for dumping waste. Once saw a old narrowboat with an ancient engine charging batteries on a remote stretch of the Oxford (north). The engine was in gear and was causing an almighty flow across the waterway ... it occurred to me that a cassette could be emptied into this flow and the contents washed away in seconds. And, if blue in the mix then a very nasty contamination of the waters. Did I mention urine separating toilets? Probably make the situation worse ...
