+TheVixthemom I don't have 7 kids (about to have baby 4, all 5 years old and under) but i do homeschool our two oldest (5 and almost 4 years old) and so everyone but daddy is home eating and snacking all day. Simple and healthy breakfast meals would be eggs (omlets), oatmeal (oatmeal bake), granola cereal, etc... for lunch sautee some fresh veggies over rice, soup. And for snacks set out a big plate of raw veggies and fruits... let them munch when they are hungry... they will have their fill and be less hungry for the big meal - but will have bellies full of nutritious stuff. I am currently doing t30 challenge to detox so no gluten, dairy, anything highly processed... loads of fresh veggies and fruits. I have a budget of $125/week for all groceries including TP, detergent, etc. yes we have fewer mouths to feed, but we also do not have a working garden (i failed at making it work, but have a new plan for next year), or our own animals

The greatest asset you have is teamwork. You are both on the same page when it comes to planning meals. You obviously planned your lifestyle too before the chicken and the eggs. My husband was spoiled before I met him, and after 35 years together he still won't eat a leftover. If only I had started out my life with a plan. I loved your video.

+Lissette H. Awesome! One thing that helps us is to remember that you can be flexible in the plan- If you are not in the mood for spaghetti, pick a different menu item from the plan... just swap them out... don't ditch meals and get new, that's what gets us into budget troubles- Oh, I'd like BBQ tonight, but it's not on the plan...

I grew up in a large family. Meat was often not on the menu. However when there was meat mother somehow made a pound of meat feel like a lot. Hamburger gravy over mashed potatoes, tuna gravy over saltine crackers with a side salad, and scalloped potatoes with a bit of ham....just so good. My favorite though was her meat balls with mushroom gravy or cheese gravy. (she used canned soup for the gravy base)

Winter🥀Rose. HAHA. Growing up we were given serving size on food, a meat, starch, two vegetables. If there were enough left for another meal it was off limits, we were allowed extra vegetables. But we also had a freezer container that little bits of leftovers went into. Once it had enough it was used to make a home made soup.

We fed our family for less than we could have gotten in food stamps when we were very poor. Our children all learned how to thrive on little money and it serves them well now that they are adults.

+Big Family Homestead Maybe your bible at your church has Matt 7:1 in it? That was kind of a general slam to a huge demographic. We have to be especially watch that as Christians. Christ said to reach out in love. Do you know why any of those people are on assistance? Frankly, the churches (including mine) have failed in teaching folks how to exist outside our church walls. We won't win too many people by lecturing them--but we sure might by extending loving, helping hand and SHOWING them a different way--a different life. That is certainly my desire. Just as it's important to be good stewards of our money--we should be extravagant in spreading His love. Our country was created as a "Christian" country. Not a freedom of religion--but a freedom to practice the religion of Christianity. We have ALL fallen short. We have focused often on the wrong things. If we get back to where we were--where we should be our country would be a much better place right now. If those who stand inside their church walls and "talk the talk" so to speak, will go outside those walls and "walk the walk" (or walk their talk :-) ) it would be a much better country too. And every one of us that don't take a stand for the right is in reality saying--we agree with the wrong.

I commented recently on another video; but I'm a fairly new subscriber, so what I'm doing is going through all your videos and bingeing on them to catch up, ha ha! I love this, and I can vouch that this totally is possible! We aren't as large of a family; but we are a family of six, and we keep our food budget down to $200 and under. It's really a thing! One thing we do is we are gleaners and foragers. Being members of our local gleaning group has helped us get SO much food that I preserve either by canning or freezing (going to be building a dehydrator here shortly) and it's been a BLESSING. Today I'm working on 70 lbs of apples that we foraged :)

Here is a well-used tip from our home. It is just my preteen son and myself, and we both enjoy tuna salad sandwiches. But my son is at the age where the hollow leg has kicked in and he could easily go through 4 cans in one lunch just for himself (the little fart in my profile pic). I make 2 cans feel like 4 by adding crushed crackers to two cans of undrained tuna in water. The tuna-flavored water is absorbed into the crackers, and once the mayo and other preferred items are added, you can't even tell it is half crackers and it is quite filling! This also works with leftover pork roast/chicken/turkey that has been shredded (I run it through the kitchenaid) with some of the leftover cooking juices ( to that, we add minced onions, pickle relish and mayo).

We shop and plan a bit differently than some. We get nearly all of our meats from the marked down bins of our 2 local stores. What we don't grow, we glean from the marked down produce bin at both stores. Lucky for us, both stores are only 5 minutes away, so we can go 2 or 3 times a week. So what I do is I plan my meals based on either what is already in the freezer, or if there is an awesome deal in the bins, we plan a few days of meals from that. Something else I do 4-5 times a year is to inventory our freezer and pantry. One more comment though, I spend 250 a month on we four and we have free eggs!!!!! I feel terribly inadequate now! ;) P.S. Hey Jonathan! Donna Joy could totally eat you under the table when it comes to eggs! I promise you! :)

its not a fun job, but i have found it saves us a good bit...and we take care of a local family whenever we can with extra food and supplies we coupon for. This allows us to do it with what we can see as our overstock in the freezer. (this family has a mom slowly succumbing to the effects of diabetes and is bed ridden, dad has had 2 strokes and the only children are 2 autistic boys).... the best reason of all for inventory/cleanout day is donating to those in need!

I spend 40$ a month on beef and 40$ on other meats. The rest of our budget is vegetables, whole grains and discount produce. I really want yo learn the art of extreme couponing. My husband & I raised 5, using a budget, they are all grown now. Season before last I filled three freezers and canned 453 jars of vegetables. My kitchen has two stoves because I can so much. Well worth the cost. I plan on 1095 meals a year and snacks. So, the amount preserved is not close to enough. When the freezer items are half way thru time, I start to can soups, meats, etc to give more shelf life. This allows us to eat for less then 4.00 daily. Bread is made at home, much tastier then store bought. Your idea's are very useful especially to the younger group just getting started. We have left over's twice a week sometimes more. I keep in mind the different ways I can use the meat in different dishes. Vegetables are always great in soups especially in the winter time. For quick meals...You can boil eggs put them in salt water in a jar and keep in the refrigerator, change water every other day. Will keep one week. Potato, carrots, chopped onions, peppers, etc can be prepped ahead of time then you can have most meals on the table in thirty minutes.

the key is planning. you planned your home life around a garden and livestock, you plan you meals and you plan your grocery trip in advance. if more people did this, they'd all save huge amounts of money of food. couponing has become a saving grace to my family, because we live in the city and can't have livestock. I save 40-80% depending how much of a plan I make ahead if time. again, the key is planning.

We deer hunt, so no cow in our house! We only buy steaks and roast, I can't remember the last time we bought a steak tho.lol Also, we only buy bacon when times are good (big sale or tax season/work bonus), otherwise it's deer sausage for breakfast. We spend maybe $300-500/yr to harvest about 5 deer, enough for more than 1 year of sausage, ground burger, cube steak, backstrap, tenderloin, jerky, and summer sausage. We love our "free range," "organic," "grass fed," "hormone fee," "cruelty free," red meat! TFS!

even taking the conservative estimate of $1.5 * 7 kids * 5 days a week * 4 weeks = $210. and that's just for one meal, double that for both breakfast and lunch. and did one of those dinners just say "bread"?? not to mention it only listed dinners for 3 weeks, not the whole month. the headline is so misleading.

Love your videos, just sayin'... lol We are researching a beef partial. Local ranchers and small farmers raise the cows and you pay a fee to help with cost of raising and you get part of the meat when its butchering time. We have a local farmer does this right up the road and makes a good profit from it and it saves the buyers money on beef.

Really like your channel, wanted to share a few things that are yummy to add to your meals my side dish. I call it burnt corn, this is how its done Since I do not have a garden, In a large non-stick skillet use about 2 or 3 cans of sweet corn drain the liquid before then spread out in pan. I use Parkay Spray little blue bottle about 1/4 or 1/2, have not tried any other butter, but I am sure it would be ok. Then, I add garlic powder to cover the top, and Italian seasoning. Cook on High temp 8 to high and let it fry, stir every few min. You may have to scrap the dripping but keep them in there they are good. You cook it for about 20 min or longer till you get a brown burnt like it was grilled. VERY YUMMY I hope you try it

250 a month for dinners I agree it can/could be done... They eat alot alot of cheese if you look at their menu. I would love to see the cost break down of their "dinner" menu that they showed. Lets add in Breakfast and lunch, snacks and dessert. Lets see some grocery receipts.. How much spaghetti are you making and what are you using to make your sauce ? The one way they atleast admit to is they eat very little meat. What stores are you shopping at ? But the one thing I do like is they showed how they fill out their calendar for DINNERS... Everyone should learn to do that and of course the hard part sticking to it.... BTW our leftover night is called buffet night.. Everything pulled out of the fridge, heated then placed on the counter.. sell serve...

I did this when my kids were little. I loved it! I think a lot of the savings comes from not going to the store all the time! my sister goes to the store everyday to buy food to make supper. spends about $20 each time. that's $400 a month! She refuses to plan ahead...

We have 8 kids at home, and homeschool. Plan to raise rabbits and chickens soon. We don't have leftovers....we used to cook a little extra to have leftovers, and there's only a few things my kids will eat precooked out of the fridge; chili, lasagna,...i think that's about it. Lol they also waste what's on their plates sometimes, which usually goes in the (3 big) dogs food. Tho they love to bake homemade pretzels and cakes. Lol I decided that we need to make *only* dinner sized meals, which has cut costs, in terms of food waste. We use compost stuff for the rabbits and pet rat, scraps for dogs.

If you live in the city you might not be able to grow your own veggies, but at least grow your own herbs. That can be a real money saver. All you need is a corner( with corner stand) or window sill (with window box). The corner stand gives more room as it has multiple levels. However much room you have make a list of the herbs you use, and start with the most expensive. Oh, and extra tip they grow back faster if you pinch them off (aka crimp then break) instead of using scissors to cut.

My cheap meal is stir fry. Chicken from Zaycon Fresh, homegrown vegetable mix (that I freeze during the summer) I do have to buy the water chestnuts and celery. Homemade chicken stock. Over rice. I usually buy 2 cases of chicken breasts for around $120.00. I freeze up 1 case and can the other. I can them in 24oz jars and use them for chicken salad. Yummy. There is also some broth in the jars that I save for the stir fry or whatever. I found out about Zaycon Fresh from Linda's Pantry and I have been very pleased with it. I also grow my own broilers each year but you just can't beat the Zaycon Fresh deal. Good video.

Thank you for posting this. We also have a large family (9 kids with 1 in Heaven and 1 away at school), and our grocery bill just nukes our budget. If we were to achieve $1000/month that would be a HUGE improvement, so we are looking for tips and we like the idea of planning out the whole month in advance. Right now we go to the grocery store every day and sometimes 2 or even 3 times per day for forgotten items. So we are definitely going to do this. One question we have is that we noticed the meal plan only covered dinner. What do you do for breakfast and lunch? Thanks and God bless!
@Bigfamilyhomestead

+Tom Abbott Most of our kids are in school so lunch happens there. For my wife and I it's usually leftovers or (from time to time) I'll have a couple extra dollar from an internet sale which buys lunch meats and such- Breakfast for us is much easier, we have chickens so all egg-based recipes are fresh and free. We make pancakes and biscuits and all other bread based stuff from scratch so that costs very little as well- Milk is provided by our goats, and loads of food comes out of the garden- Being as self sufficient is the only way we can make this happen.

I'm so glad you do these. Seeing others do it reminds me how much easier when I plan. Just so happens, I relaxed Sunday afternoon under a big shade tree ... and warm sun to boot... and made our menu. Surprised at similarities to yours. I put my 'pantry meal' as tuna roll (tuna, mushroom soup, peas, cheese inside a biscuit turnover), ants on a log (stuffed celery with raisins on top), and canned fruit. Its Hubby's childhood comfort food. Also, a Santa Rosa Salad w/sliced chicken breast on top, homemade rolls, and maybe a pecan pie. The salad has romaine lettuce, blue cheese, walnuts, and a bit of tomato.
