The biggest piece of advice i could give anyone that has stopped me from allowing myself to get heartbroken or into haram is that "if Allah SWT planned it, he would've planned it the HALAL WAY" and NO other way. And to Add a little bit more to that there should always be a third person when getting to know you potential S/O, if there is so third person, just remember that its you, them and SHAITAAN. I believe that praising a couple for doing in the halal way is a very great example of what our society and generation has come to. This should be seen as normal or the bare minimum. Are you saved? If you died tonight would you go to heaven or hell?
