On our main channel, you may have seen this video • Fake customer wants IN... where we prank a bike mechanic with a ridiculous customer, a ridiculous bike, and a ridiculous bag full of high end parts. We edited down over 6 hours of footage, and left a lot out to make the video short and digestible. Today, we'll go into detail about how we executed this prank, how we got the bike, and all the planning that went into making this happen!

Even the behind the scenes trash talk was real mellow. When I worked at a custom bike shop as a mechanic we would roast some of the "idiot" customers that came through...I'd be scared if I found out our chats were filmed lol. Great shop and great mechanic...love to see it.

@@Nick_CF I think that is a big part of why he didn't mention to the customer how ridiculous this upgrade is (besides the parts were already bought and implied sentimental value of the bike). The urge to find out if this was actually possible is way to strong with mechanics.

@@kilianortmann9979 as a mechanic, I can confirm. I had a schwinn protocol 2.7 that came with a 150mm e2e rear shock...and I slapped a 165mm shock in there just for the fun of seeing if it would actually work. To my absolute amazement, IT DID! It was very stiff off the bat, but once it got past that stiffness, it was butter and felt bottomless, like I could ride it on anything. It certainly climbed like nothing I've owned since. It had a Suntour Epixon fork, a Marzocchi rear shock, a TransX Kitsune dropper, continental tires, and I even slapped an SLX derailleur and XT hubs on it. The only thing schwinn left on it was the frame and the saddle, lol. It was unfortunately stolen and parted out, and I let the guy who found my frame keep it for his own build. I had already moved on to building another, and then I heard a crack sound that I thought was the frame, so I abandoned that and salvaged most of its parts to build my current trail bike, which I just put under an overhaul. I just replaced my shift cable and housing, bottom bracket and crankset, rear hub, and both tires. I'm about to disassemble my suspension, replace the bearings, and lubricate my shock bushings because my suspension is a little creaky and I don't like it.

I used to be a computer tech. Right when windows vista came out (it was atrocious at launch) I had a customer come in with his computer and a brand new boxed version of Vista and he wanted me to install it because he had no clue wtf he was doing. He must have paid 150 or 200€ in a store for it. For a computer that was a few years old. Made absolutely no sense. You know what I did ? I told him how much it would cost (a backup + install + backup restoration was not cheap), he said that's cool, so I installed it. In the end he paid a fortune to be a beta tester basically. Very very similar to this story except it wasn't a prank, just a weird customer ...

Great prank, I owned a bike shop for several years back in the 90's and Wheels Manufacturing had great stuff even back then, I remember the brand. I also remember customers coming in and asking for somewhat similar crazy upgrades, expensive forks on rigid bikes, STI shifters on old 70's racers. When you get crazy requests you have to reach out to companies like Wheels that make all sorts of adaptors and shims, and that was actually the most fun you can ever have in my opinion, making things work that shouldn't.

I don't go to bike shops too much, but I haven't for years, because the last one we took my wife's bike to, seemed like it was okay. But when I got there 3 days later to pick up the bike when the said it would be ready, they hadn't even done it. So one employee tells another one, who was probably a trainee to do it real quick. And he put the brakes on backwards. I was impressed that the guy at this bike shop, really knew what he was doing, enough to tell what was going on with the bike and how it shouldn't work, but it did.

Pat is clearly a great guy, & a capable mechanic. However, IMO, when you have expertise in a given field, you need to be the hero that customers need, rather than the hero they want! The bike was given to you by big bro, & has great sentimental value? Then clean it up, & hang on the garage wall! When you've done that, then let's chat about a cost effective frame, fork, etc, to go with those quality parts you have! (*I realise I'm suffering a sense of humour bypass, here, but that horrific mismatch, triggered me!)

About 8 years ago or so, I picked up a Gary Fisher MB and decided to try and find Sram X.0 group that was the top of the line stuff back then... which I couldn't afford at the time. Dropped about $500 on everything new old stock, think that stuff was about $1600 the year it came out. Included buying a Connex chain in gold, new pedals, leather grips, suspension seat post (thudbuster?). Made it an absolute blast to ride. Then I converted it to electric assist with a BBHSD bottom bracket drive, took longer than I expected to convert due to a big line of weld inside the bottom bracket that I had to grind down. Once I got it dialed in it was a blast. Added a 52v 20ah battery and could cruise at about 35mph.

Seth, just thought you'd get a kick out of my story as it's not quite as absurd, but also a bit nuts. Basically, my Ghost Keto blew out the derailleur, and I'd been planning to upgrade the drive train to something at some point, but hadn't bothered until now. Well, I then bought a 12 speed standard SRAM cassette (The one that you can use with Shimano parts) and a Axis electronic shifter, along with the stuff to make it work. Got it all assembled, and mostly working. The only real issue I ran into was not cranking down the crank hard enough, causing it to loosen and creak each bike ride. Some nice folks in the local club helped me out with identifying that one issue, and now I have a great bike to run my local trails with, with electronic shifting, which is really nice.

Great video guys! I'm curious how much they would've charged if this actually happened... I had a similar experience about a month ago. So a neighbor was about to trash this Diamondback Edgewood HB, I knocked on the door and he said go ahead and take it, he said it was not worth getting it fixed and he's just going to buy a new bike. Score! I knew exactly what needed to be done but decided to take it to our local bike shop (Action Wheels, Deptford NJ). He looked at it and spun off a ridiculous list of unnecessary things and quoted $350-400 to fix. I said I couldn't really afford it right now but I'll call you in a few weeks. Took it home, and after 2 hours it was 100% working order. All I had to do was adjust the derailleurs, run an old extra rear derailleur cable I had through the frame, adjust the brakes, and pump up the tires... $350 bike for free.... 😀 All the extra things he pointed out were just to jack up the cost, like a lot of car mechanics do. I understand that yes, they have to make money on every job. But just making things up assuming I was clueless, was exactly why I stopped using that place when I was a kid. I'm just glad to have a new bike 🤙
