Good job on the mold. I’m a retired building contractor. I worked on fire, smoke, water damage Early in my career and I learned chlorine is a miracle chemical. lol I’ve also used straight chlorine mixed with soap and water. You can use it on rock, brick, block, wood, vinyl and the list goes on. Anywhere there is mold chlorine will take care of it. I subcontracted putting together log cabin kits for about 7 years and got tired of traveling. My wife and I are buying a 200 acre property and building our dream cabin. To make a short story long we have both been fighting cancer and couldn’t work so we almost lost what little we had. True Story about having faith in God: I know everybody thinks the rich uncle dying and leaving a fortune is a cliche but it happened to my wife and I. Uncle Rodger was poor all his life. Years ago he filed a lawsuit and we all forgot about it. He passed on last year and we are taking care of his daughter who is blind and had numerous brain surgeries. Just a month ago the lawsuit settled and in the settlement years ago he gave us half and put my wife as executor. It’s a LARGE number. Keep working for your dreams friend and happy vibes your way.

I have heard that white distilled vinegar works better at fighting mold. We had used chlorine for years and now love the vinegar. Pretty cool how you and your wife got that settlement. As for the cancer, check out alternative ways. It really works! May God bless you.

It will be a family treasure with many good memories. I wish you well. I know this is a o!d video, but I'm enjoying it now. Going to keep watching.

In Italy loggers, in the past, left the tip the log with the branches. leafs will dry the log from umidity conpletely to survive. It was an ancient tecnique to season the wood.

Interesting idea .Do you know when the old loggers pealed the trees ,right after felling or later when the leafs had sucked them dry?

When I saw that patch of poison ivy, I cringed because I'm recovering from another round of it this summer. I carried logs for the campfire which were cleared of it so I was unaware that I was doing this task at peril to myself. It's really nasty stuff. This time, I had to see the Doc for a shot and tablets besides over-the-counter anti-histamine. When I return to our woods, I'm going poison ivy hunting to eradicate the stuff like I did in my yard a few years ago.

You are wrong about Poplar, seasoned poplar is excellent for asking drawer boxes and other small woodworking projects. I use a lot of it for hidden parts in my projects. It has been stable in many of them for more than 20 years. It also takes stains well and can masquerade as walnut.

Even with Brush Teeth on bucket you can skim surface layer or roll bucket back and backdrag using the angled portion, does not work as well as a cutting edged bucket face but it allows grading while having a Brush type front bucket that can sift out the dirt, keeping slash piles dirt free

Summer before grade 6 I was out at our cottage running around in just shorts. I got mosquito bites I had scratched open as kids do then ended up playing in some poison ivy (I had no idea what it was at 11 years old. It got infected bad and my skin on both legs started turning green and it could peel off and yellow blisters started forming where the green skin would peel off. I was scared so tried to hide it from my parents. It was my brother who seen it eventually and told my mom who rushed me to the hospital. I spent 11 days in intensive care unit, and scariest of all was doctor told me if I had waited 2-3 days more and I would have lost both my legs. A week or so more and I would have lost my life! All from poison ivy and fear of the unknown. Thank God I recovered 100%, even all the scarring on my legs miraculously cleared up completely! I KNOW God helped me then and also when I fell off our schools roof (we were playing soccer on our elementary schools roof for some unknown reason lol, kids do stupid things I guess)... there was a mini 1 foot or so wall all around the roof and of course I managed to fall over it and fall down 12 feet or so straight onto concrete head first! I landed basically right on my forehead! Not a scratch on my head though, but my foot swell up so bad it broke my shoelaces. I crawled home and told my grandma I lived with most summers that I just hurt it playing hockey so she wouldnt worry. My friends and I still talk about that day even though it was over 20 years ago now. Everyone seen me land on my face on the concrete and not even have a tiny mark on my head. Something happened that day. Wasnt my time to go...

I’m assuming you peeled the bark in the woods for two reasons, so the mess wouldn’t be in the landing area and to speed up the seasoning process, but I would think debarking them after dragging them to the landing would have saved time cleaning the dirt and grime off them before sending them through the mill and chancing destroying cutter blades.

I was wondering why you weren’t using a come-along winch with the common problems of felling trees with man power in dense woods - and viola you were. Great videos! A bit set-off about not wearing helmets with ear cups and face shields along with chain saw chaps. You’ll pay for the hearing issues later on in life. Spot-on about the log wash with bleach.

EEK! I thought the dreaded black wings was on a Jabberwock! I do believe you are right about the sap and stuff being different in different regions and the ones with the sticky sap would be pine because the resin is sticky I suppose it follows that it would be difficult to debark them at the wrong times. I think the lesson I'm learning is that all this varies from species to species and region to region. For instance I am from Scotland and although it can be freezing from the end of September to the beginning of June we don't have a frost line (if what you mean by that is like permafrost) so I don't think we have such huge temperature fluctuations that a cement on hardcore base would crack or 'heave' at least I have never heard of subsidence in buildings due to that reason in the UK. Even though we get Arctic temperatures from Siberia (we are in a wind tunnel apparently) the freeze doesn't go down that deep. ..perhaps in Orkney or Shetland Islands it's got a frost line...There are no trees there at all (big bushes but no trees bigger than like hawthorn that you'd find in a hedge row. It's weird but true. .no log cabins in the Orkneys or Shetland... it's all drystone dykes and little houses like the tiny croft houses in the Scottish Highlands. It's strange how a few hundred miles can make such a difference but here in Britain it can and does. London is never colder than -4 to -6°C but 700 miles north to where I was born it's commonly -20 to minus 30°C. And the plants that grow in London, like Magnolia and Palm trees couldn't handle a Scottish summer Lol!

Urushiol from poison ivy, oak, and sumac can stay active on clothes for up to 5 years if unwashed. The oils are even active for 5 years on cut down/dead vines. You can even get it in your throat and lungs if you burn it or stand down wind of a live vine on a windy day. We have so much on our property 😞. Impossible to get rid of it all.

What exactly would happen if you started building with your logs as soon as you cut them down instead of waiting a year? Say you had no where else to go and had to erect the cabin ASAP. What would happen to the wood?
@TheOutsiderCabin
@TheOutsiderCabin 10 жыл бұрын
koshi116 I did build a smaller log cabin (the video is on my channel), with green logs before, and it worked out pretty decent. The reason why it's better to let the logs season first is: they're much lighter to work with, you are able to see where the checks form on the logs and position them accordingly, and most importantly the cabin won't settle nearly as much. If a cabin settles too much it can break windows and warp doors. If you do build a cabin with green logs right away, you'll just have to wait install your door & window frames at least a year later, to avoid that problem.
@koshi116

Interesting! I am going to be building a log cabin to permanently live in soon, nothing big or fancy, probably 10x10 at the most, just to get a roof over my head. I dunno if Ill be able to wait a year for my lumber to season though which is why I ask.
