4th year vet student here - wondering if maybe Pichi sees some degree of light/dark. It would explain why she seemed to be able to track a finger or a ruler - changing pattern of light as the object passes across her field of vision - but did not seem to track the laser pointer, unless it was pretty close to her (at which point maybe it registered as "brighter" in her field of vision). It could also still explain why the cotton ball test worked - it was relatively close to her face, and the rapid movement would have caused enough of a shift in the light patterns that she may have reacted. You guys did a good job assessing her pupillary light reflex, which was intact in her good eye, but it doesn't necessarily mean she can see, as that reflex doesn't communicate with the brain! It does, however, tell you that her retina works. The menace response (if they close their eyes in reaction to something suddenly appearing close to their face) is a little trickier - it's a learned response, which is why puppies and kittens don't do it, and also sometimes if cats are suspicious or freaked out, they'll repress the response voluntarily (which isn't possible with a true reflex). It's also VERY difficult to do it in such a way that you don't graze their whiskers, or generate a little breeze that hits their whiskers...the vets struggle with this too!! It's SO hard to assess visual ability in our companion animals, and cats in particular - this was a fascinating deep dive! No matter what, though, she's so lucky to have humans who are so so dedicated to her care and respecting her boundaries!!!!!

@@LeeAnnC Her pupil may react more slowly or not very well! In her good eye it reacted to a close up, targeted light source, but the main light being turned on and off might not have been enough of a stimulus to trip it. That’s my best guess!!

I think she has some vision but out on the street if you're an abandoned cat you learn to conserve energy because food is scarce. That's why she doesn't go after the laser because she knows it's not food or an attacker, therefore not worth her time or energy. Maybe that's why it seems like she doesn't see. But when it comes to food or an approaching threat, she seems to react like a normal cat. I'm sure her one remaning eye is not the healthiest but I'm glad she still has some vision at least.

I'm not sure if it's the same for humans and cats but for humans when we talk about someone being blind it usually refers to "legally blind" and it doesn't mean they have absolutely no vision at all - so perhaps that's what the vet meant when he said she's blind. It looks like Pichi has some visual awareness - she notices sudden changes and turns towards it, but she's unable to focus on it and actually follow it. Interestingly it also looks like she highly prioritises her other senses - when there's a sound nearby or one of the other cats touches her, she got distracted from visual cues she otherwise picks up on.
@Kandralla3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, if you watch her eyes she doesn't look like her eyes are tracking small objects. She's turning her head to face the right direction but that could be because she hears the object or because she can see large objects (probably as a big blurry blob of color). I wouldn't worry about the catwalks even if she is blind. People who are blind learn to compensate with other senses, some have even maximized this by learning how to echo-locate, there's a video of a blind person riding a bicycle using this technique. Brains are good at pattern matching, what you "see" is just an interpretation of signals coming from all your senses, if one of them isn't working the brain adapts. If you could "see" what a blind person see's in their mind it's entirely possible, likely even, that the image would not be at all unfamiliar. Pichi survived a long time out in the dangerous outdoors, navigating the catwalk blind is probably nothing relative to not getting run over by a car blind.
@tricksfollies95493 жыл бұрын
I think she can definitely see, just not very well. In previous videos, when Rachel or Jun would look or speak in her direction, she would look at them. But like you said, she doesn't have great depth perception and she's not very good at following small objects.

Same thing with deafness by the way. The vast majority of deaf people (and animals) can hear some sounds, just not enough for their hearing to function at anything like a normal level. Pichi does seem to mostly fail some of those tests, so she may be technically blind, but have some limited vision. Cats have poor vision anyway, so they are less impacted by sight impairment than many other animals, as they rely on their other senses pretty heavily. Also the soccer test is not a good one, because Blind cats can totally do that. The food is noisy and a completely blind cat could easily catch it.

I have a blind cat with healthy looking eyes. I recognize some of Pichie's behaviors with mine. I would expect her vision is not very good but she has some. Do not be scared for the cat walk. My blind cat learns with time the location of wall shelves and has no trouble navigating through. When she jumps off shelves she presents her butt first and touch ground with her back paws. She also learns a lot by listening to the other cats to figure out how to reach places. I'm sure Poki has become a sort of guide for Pichie.

As a cat owner and rescuer for 20 years, I can confirm that she does have limited vision. Your light and cotton ball tests proved it. It's not MUCH, but enough to get by. But remember, cats use more than their vision to survive, so as long as there aren’t TOO many major changes to the new house (obviously the move will be the largest change) she should do well). Good luck with her and the move though. May I suggest housing her in the cat room for the first day or so just so she can get her bearings? Gerald, even when socialized to a family, can get bit freaked out by such changes (I am already considering a move myself and such a plan for my own feral who has been homes for five years). Pichi’s bond with Poki is adorable and reminds me so much of my own feral’s bond to one of my “pet” cats. I love when they attach to a single family member as a way of picking their “home@. Sadly I can’t get a shirt as I don't get paid until the 3rd, but vampire Nagi is adorable.

Little tip for the ''hand close to the face test''; it should be done pretty quickly. It is the type of test that we do in vet clinics: You touch the eye a couple of time, so the pet knows what is coming and then you kind of ''fake'' the little tap by just coming close to the face. It would be probably a bit tough with Pichi since she doesn'tseem too interested in having her face held. But it could easily be done with the boys! :)

I adopted a kitten last year that I was told was completely blind! The first thing I did was test if she could follow my hand and she was able to! She's definitely not entirely blind, but she doesn't have much vision at all. She won't jump up on things very often unless she's very sure of where she's going to land and has real trouble locating snacks when they're tossed for her. Even without her full sight though, she's still a terror! With Pichi, it looks like she's a similar level of blindness so might just be able to see light and dark. That with the visible nystagmus and missing her other eye, it can't easy for her! But you're taking such wonderful care of your precious girl!

I think the mouse-catching involved using all his other senses, and the bed thing was a combination of memory and of judging distance by the sounds the human (me) made just breathing on the bed. He found his food and water bowl and litter boxes by memory and whatever other cues cats have. Possibly he still had a faint bit of light sensitivity left, but not much.

When a cat loses their vision, they tend to have enhanced senses in other ways. In my opinion, I think she probably has spots in her eyes that are impaired, she doesn't always react, or loses track easily. She obviously reacts to light, her pupil isn't fixed in one position. I wouldn't worry about her on the catwalk, she'll be way more careful than the boys and probably learn every inch of it better than they ever will.

Seeing Pichi's progress from super scared to suuuper comfy and happy makes me wanna cry happy tears! Im so proud of her and you guys are great cat parents!

I love Pichi!! She looks like she has a lot of Siamese in her. What I love about her is that she was so feral and scared, and she's overcoming so much of her fears, even with her lack of vision, she is slowly trusting. Some of these tests might not be perfect for her, as I think she is just starting to trust her world enough to "play". When cats play, they let a little of their guard down, and fully focus on their "prey" (toy, string...whatever). Bringing Pichi in with your other cats, being feral, partially blind AND the only girl...just goes to show, with time and love, almost any cat can become a companion. All the kitties are wonderful, but Pichi is extra special and I love seeing her progress. Will she sit on a human lap yet? Will she sleep on your bed? I think Poki has become her security. She's just become so pretty too, I really though you two might be making a mistake by rescuing her and bringing her into your "pack", but who better then you guys?? I'm amazed at the changes in her, and look forward to Pichi continuing to blossom into her best self.

I do think that she can see, maybe not all that well but well enough to get by. Even so, she has her boyfriend Poki to assist her to get around. Pichu and Poki are such a cute couple.

I wonder if she just has really bad eyesight. My eyes are terrible, everything is so fuzzy and it could explain why she could see the cotton ball, but not the laser pointer based on my experience as small lights are so fuzzed out I can't see them too well. Or the cotton ball is more interesting than a red light.
@christophersmith83163 жыл бұрын
I have very poor eyesight without glasses and laser pointers and lights fuzz out to the size of baseballs and are very apparent to the level of covering up other things. A light puffball on a light background tends to mix into the background so I only see where colors change.

In my experience, some cats just don't care about the laser pointer. "Hmm. Not real. Not wasting my time. Sorry you spent money on that thing. Not."

Her mannerisms have changed so much and she looks so absolutely happy and confident. She definitely has impaired vision and hides it well which is to be expected for a cat. I imagine it is either like with humans that need glasses or she might have "blind spots" in her vision. Either way she seems unbothered by it in your presence which is so sweet.

I have a blind pirate kitty, too! His eye doesn't react to light at all and is always fully dilated. I had to message a blind cat rescue to learn how to play with him when I first rescued him. He likes things that make just enough sound to track but not so much that it's scary. Fetch is his favorite game, but sometimes it takes him a while to find the ball. He likes to climb but doesn't jump anywhere he can't feel with his paws. We had to make him stairs to get on the bed, but he's okay jumping off of it. Blind cats are still cats. They make great and loving pets.

Please consider a reprint for next year! I am way too broke for the next two months, but this print is EVERYTHING especially with the glow in the dark elements! I need it in my life and I doubt any of the people purchasing now would want to ebay off any of these shirts. I at least absolutely wouldn't, even if I bought extras.

Pichi seemed to become the much needed piece to your family. She settled in purrfectly, and looks like she is just having the time of her life, even being bratt by occasionally 'running' from you guys. It's super clear she loves you, and her catmates, specially Poki. I'm happy to see she still has some vision, but I have no doubt if she is blind, that your kitties hold your nature and help her along in their own ways. xD

I feel like as Rachel said, the issue with Pichi isn't how much she can see but how much she cares about the tests lol

2:58 "I think she can see it. I think she just doesn't care." That's entirely possible. My cat didn't care for lasers either. She would bat at them once or twice, then get bored with it.

I love how sweet you guys are with your cats and letting them have their personalities. Especially Pichi with her background. I've noticed she seems a bit more timid about being near you guys or getting pets, and part of that is her past and possibly just personality. I've grown up with all sorts of cats, from 'super cuddly monsters' to 'im scared of everything that moves', and all cats are different and you guys definitely know Pichi way more than I do, but I might have a few small tips that might get Pichi more into being touched by you guys? With the really timid cats i've been around the best thing to do is to be patient and make yourself look small and get down to their level. If theres a cat that has certain things it doesnt like, feet touching, holding, petting, noise, etc., try introducing this in the smallest amount possible but combined with the distraction of something they really really like. For Pichi, if she would tolerate small pets while getting favorite treats, then moving on to meals, playing with toys, etc. Obviously you guys are doing an amazing job, I love your videos and your cats are all hilarious babies. Especially Poki, he looks just like my cat Mochi and they're both loud and love licking hands! X'D

I think you and your vet are both right in that she seems to have partial damage to her optic nerve - which is responsible for visual input, but also acts as the first part of the neural pathway for the tests you were performing i.e. tracking (the 'fixating response'), pupil constriction (the 'pupillary light reflex') and test 4. (the 'menace response'). I think the fact that her pupil does constrict when you shine light, but not quite as quickly or completely as e.g. Haku's, suggests partial damage to her optic nerve. For the menace response, you should cover one eye (no need for Pichi), hold your hand away, and then quickly bring your hand close to the eye (but don't hit them on the face!) to see if they blink. I think your problem is you were moving your hand slowly, so there is no sudden threat to perceive. But note that this is a response, not a reflex, meaning that they consciously realise pretty quickly that there isn't any real threat so they'll stop blinking after the first 2-3 times you do it. Pichi is a very cute cat. :) I'm glad she appears to have a bit of vision still.
@animeloverXinuyasha3 жыл бұрын
Also I think she should be fine on your cat walks even if she lost her sight completely as they will be fixed, not like furniture which can be moved around. Cats learn pretty well the layout of the room even without vision. Often when geriatric cats go blind, their owners don't even realise until they move the litter box!
